MY REVIEW: I LOVE this place. I usually hit it for lunch about once a week. If you try going for dinner, or later in the evening, it's typically packed.
Typically, I get a mixed plate called "El Mariachi". It comes with one beef fajita taco, two cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. I saw one reviewer complaining that the fajitas don't come with anything. Well, I've never ordered a fajita plate, so I can't speak to that, but this plate is loaded, as you can see. The beef fajita meat at this place is FABULOUS, and the main reason that I go to this restaurant which is farther away from my house than a lot of taquerias. The cheese enchiladas are also fantastic, as is the guacamole.
The only things I don't care for as much at La Tapatia are the chips and salsa. The chips aren't very exciting, and the salsa is solid but not outstanding. The iced tea is also pretty average. But I'm not going there for the chips and tea - I'm going there for the main course, which is fantastic.
My wife will not go to most taquerias, but this is the one place she happily goes with me. They have a very extensive menu, but I'm the kind of diner who finds one great dish and gets it over and over. I highly recommend La Tapatia.

MY REVIEW: Don't you just hate it when beloved restaurants go bad? This used to be a great little place to have a few cheap margaritas and some good food. I used to organize groups of 6-12 from work and we loved the food. I miss those days. I have been told the ownership has changed hands; maybe that is why the recipes have also been changed, and not for the better. I ordered my first Mole here a decade ago and fell in love with the dish. But Tapatia's mole no longer has the compexity a good-or even mediocre-mole has. The mole they serve now at the Richmond location is a flavorless brown goop. Apparently they went from homemade to whatever it is they can get from Sysco. They still serve green and red salsas, but they are no longer Tex-Mex style. More like a mild canned variety from, say, Ohio. Or NYC. No heat, no fire, no real Tex-Mex character. You now have to ask for the marinated peppers, garlic toes and carrots, but why would you bother? They changed the spicy vinegary marinade to plain sugar water. Again, no heat, no fire, no spice.
The chicken breast sandwich is served on a huge bolillo, with a smear of guacamole and the tiniest slice of tomato, but still tastes flavorless because the chicken is not marinated – it’s not salted. I mean, who serves chicken with no salt? All in all, it’s a shame to spend money in this place because the quality and caring are long gone, and it’s resting on old Houston Press “best of” laurels. It’s long past its prime. Restaurants are hurting these days for business with rising food prices, and there are many good eateries in Houston who deserve your business. Seek them out and pass this one by.

MY REVIEW: I can't speak for the other locations but this one is pretty good. The fajitas are very good but they don't come with anything - so although at first it looks like the restaurant is inexpensive, by the time you add cheese, guacamole, etc. you're paying 15 dollars for fajitas for one anyway.
The rice and beans are decent, the chips and queso are good. It's always fast and it's close, and it's a little cheaper than the big names, but not a huge financial deal. But, for being close and good it gets a thumbs up.

MY REVIEW: My girlfriend and I love Mexican. This particular La Tapatia is where we go when we don't feel like cooking after a day of work or driving in Galleria traffic to find a place to eat that has decent food, a decent selection and a fair price. It's not a romantic setting or a place to go if you want to impress someone, however if you are just hungry and craving mexican, we recommend it. It's very much a neighborhood taqueria. I wouldn't really recommend going out of your way to visit, but if you have late night munchies and your in the area, stop in because I doubt you'll be disappointed. (of corse this is depending on your expections, but be realistic...it's a taqueria).

MY REVIEW: I have not eaten breakfast here in the last few years, although I used to all the time when I lived nearby. Boy, have things gone downhill. This Sunday morning, even though the place was maybe 1/4 full, there was not a waitress in sight when I walked in. I seated myself at a table which had not been wiped down. There was no decaf available. I ordered the green chilaquiles, which used to be very good here. I was served a soggy, oily mess of chips and cheese with maybe one egg incorporated into it. It had refried beans on the side, which were cold. My disgust was obvious but my hardly touched plate was removed without comment or concern by the waitress. I paid $7.47 for the the most disgusting breakfast plate I can remember. I will not ever eat there again.

MY REVIEW: Cant understand why people go here.. first time i tried their mexican plate; it was barely an OK I asked my friends who live close by there and they said try the fajitas. I did and thought they were very mediocre.
I also dont understand how they get away with having a smoking and non smoking dining area. You are asked upon seating if you want smoking or non-smoking. I think they are trying to say they are bar and exempt from non-smoking codes.
Lots of better Mexican places than this ... by a long shot

MY REVIEW: Tapatia is our reliable standby for those nights that cooking isn't convenient or we're running late with work or whatever. Everything is good and promptly delivered. They never fail to make a special order for my quesadilla-loving son and my kids actually got dessert one night-it was obviously extra pieces of somebody's birthday cake, but the kids loved it.
"Chiliaques" is the egg dish with corn chips, green chili sauce and sour cream.
They will definitely have our business forever

MY REVIEW: A former co-worker picked me up for lunch at La Tapatia downtown & when we arrived we discovered it is closed. What a disappointment. This was the best Mexican food downtown. The Spinach Enchiladas were great. Sorry to see it go, but maybe it will show up in another downtown location?

MY REVIEW: My family and I visit La Tapatia very often, it is known around the city of Alvin that Tapatia is the only place I go to when I am craving some authentic mexican food. The thing I like about Tapatia is that it's alot of food for little money! The biggerst burrito I have ever seen, is the sheepest thing on the menu. The fajita beef is the best I have ever had. When I go there it makes wonder why I ever ate at any kind of "Tex Mex" restraunts before. The waitresses are always prompt and polite. Along with the manager too. My family and I plan on making many more visits in the future!

MY REVIEW: Usually go for breakfast since they serve breakfast everyday. Breakfasts or the breakfast tacos are excellent. You even get chips and salsa served at breakfast. The fresh squeezed orange juice is the best! Breakfast is very reasonably priced.

MY REVIEW: This was our 1st visit, may try again for the Happy Hour. The sauces for the chips were really spicey. We ordered a Chicken Nacho's and Beef Fajita Enchildas. The Nacho's were very different. The chips were soggy and the lettuce was wilted because they heat it up with everything on the plate. The refried beans had no flavor.... The Enchiladas were pretty good....The one waitress was very rude..short with us, but the manager was nice and took care of any issues.
We probably won't go back for dinner, but we may try it for the Happy Hour...drinks are pretty cheap.

MY REVIEW: go there for lunch quite often because it's as good a place to get a big meal or a snack on the cheap and I work nearby. I love their chilaquiles and pollo adovada. had the pechuga de pollo today and liked it fine, but the adovada is soooo superior. have rarely been disapointed . my dining companion (the boss) had the carne asada and commented on how unexpectedly tender it was. one complaint; the jukebox!!!!! it's way too loud and when some goofball puts a bunch of cash in it and plays a five or six whiny ranchera songs or techno disco it just kind of ruins the atmosphere until the thing quits.

MY REVIEW: First I would have to title this review " La Tapatia Mexican Cafe :a series of unfortunate dining events". I am a long time customer with a hankering for Pollo Assado. Which in my opinion, nobody does it better. But having moved away, and moved back, I had not been in a while. And what a difference that while made. The restaurant expanded and spread out, more power to them. But I think the Richmond location is now one to avoid. To start with it used to be a noisy place w/ a combination of lively latin music and happy diners. Now, it is a clamorous place w/out the lively music, and the noise is the noisy din of everybody trying to talk over the noisy din. It is like they have lost thier souls.
Secondly, tables that crowded in to accomodate the geatest ammount of patrons possible to the point, that both times me and my wife have gone there of in the last month, that we have had to contend with the backsides of our fellow diners bumping into our tables, and kind of staying there Level w/ our meals.
I think when they remodeled, they did not take into consideration the echo effect of higher ceilings. Much to our chagrin.
On the second point, what can be said, rude people at a crowded busy restarant.
From now on when I desire one of the delicious meals that they serve, I will definately go to a different location. Because we will not be coming back to the one on Richmond.

MY REVIEW: Good Tex-Mex. More "authentic" than other Mexican restaurants. Tacos are excellent. Prices are very reasonable. The service is friendly. The tortas (sandwiches) are also good. My wife had the chicken tortas and said it was really good. One of my kids had the enchilidas and devoured it in no time. This has become my favorite place for Mexican food.

MY REVIEW: This place is OK..It's close to UST which is where I'm a student. Their lunch specials are reasonable but to be quite honest the service is so so.. None of the wait staff smiles.. they seem bothered when you make a request.. true they get really busy during the lunch rush but smiles and a good attitude is what brings people back!

MY REVIEW: Just finished eating my breakfast to-go order of BARBACOA TACOS--EXCELLENT!!! I have been searching this area for a mexican restaurant that serves them, and after many phone calls found this place to be the only one. The other breakfast tacos that my boyfreind got were also good. The girl at the door was really sweet, too.

MY REVIEW: I had not visited this restaurant in quite some time as I had not enjoyed a previous visit. However, after a pleasant visit, at a friends suggestion, to the 1749 Richmond location, I decided to try this loacation again. Next time I will just drive to the 1749 Richmond location.
At the 5551 Richmond location, I ordered a simple plate of enchiladas de fajita, a cup of chili con carne, iced tea, and flan. The tortillas for the enchiladas were soggy from being steamed so long. The flavor was ok, and the meat inside was ok, tender enough and the flavor was good. But the soggy enchiladas, along with the over steamed rice and watery beans, along with the watered down chili con queso went a long way toward recommending that I go somewhere else for my tex-mex fix next time.
I must however recommend the flan, though it was smallish, and presentation was non-existent, the density, texture, and flavor were excellent! Even the caramel sauce that at first appeared on the light side, proved to have just the right mild "bite" to go with this flan.

MY REVIEW: I visited the Richmond/ Chimneyrock location, it was the WORST dining expierence of my life!!! The food was average mexican, no complaints there. The service on the other hand was terrible! I went with a girlfriend of mine, we order two beers to start. Our waitress stared at our ID's for a good min. or two befor handing them back, as if we were somehow irritating her (we are both in our mid 20's) A different waitress gave us our water, chips and salsa. After 10-15 min of trying to get anyones attention the first waitress comes over from flirting with a tabel of men, again looking very irritated with us, we give her our order, instead of putting our order in she returnes to the tabel of men flirting!!! Finally we get our food, but still no beer?!?! By this time all we wanted to do was GO. When our check eventually made it's way to our table we discovered not only were we over charged but we were also charged for the beers we never recieved. My friend & I approach her with the mistake, instead of changing the error she wants to argue with us saying the prices were correct and that we had ordered the beer, apparently ordering dosnt mean recieving yet they expect you to still pay. We paid for our dinner, not the beers, & it was my first time not tipping. IT WAS THE MOST DISCUSTING DINNING EXPIERENCE OF MY LIFE!!!!!

MY REVIEW: This is now my favorite place for Mexican food on the west side. I have been all up and down Westheimer from the Beltway to Hwy 6, trying the different Mexican food locales, but now that La Tapatia is here this is where I'll eat. I had been going to M*y Amigos because I liked the food and ambience and it was very close to home, but that was before.
La Tapatia's food is very tasty. I'm especially fond of their chicken dishes and their shrimp tacos. Margaritas are the best I've had anywhere.
Prices are very reasonable.
The location is where another Mexican restaurant used to be but failed, almost at Hwy 6, behind a W*endy's. I hope La Tapatia is able to get potential customers to know they are here and come try it (please advertise) because I want this restaurant to stay around.

The chicken fajitas are TOP notch and the service is super great! Highly recommend it and very very economical considering the zip code!!
