MY REVIEW: The coffee and food are superior to that of Starbucks, however the service is lousy. I guess the best word to describe the service is 'smug'. it's sort of a combination of an air of superiority and mild annoyance. My wife and I were a little surprised at the price of the soy chai and biscotti we ordered ($6.15), so we asked to confirm the price, and the woman fires off the prices:
"4.05 for the chai, 35 cents for the soy and a dollar seventy-five for the biscotti" and then walked away from the register.
It wasn't what she said, it was the way she said it. she said it as if she was thinking:
'I know the prices, that's what they are, don't question me, you'll be wrong'.
And she said it while swirling her fingers around at the different buttons on the register. it's hard to really convey the weirdness of this incident using only text. This isn't the first time we've noticed this. It's like this EVERY time we go in, even with different baristas.
I hate going to S*tarbucks and my wife thinks their coffee is substandard, but I think we'll keep going there just because the service is so much nicer. Diedrich Coffee: The only think superior than their food is their attitude complex.

MY REVIEW: The coffee and hot drinks here are extremely good to excellent. Bar none, the best cup of drip coffee in Houston that I've ever enjoyed. Mochas, teas, non-coffee drinks are all good too.
The service, on the other hand, is flatly terrible, particularly during afternoons and weekends. Staff are impatient with questions, and routinely behave in a hostile or smug manner. If you have an allergy and need to confirm ingredients, or any other information before ordering, their manner will make it clear just how irritating they find you. Like other reviewers, I sometimes go to other coffee retailers to avoid the rudeness of the staff, even though their coffee is vastly superior.
The staff working in the morning seems to be less hostile, however, and the shop attracts a different crowd, mostly commuters and businesspeople with a sprinkling of students.

MY REVIEW: Unfortunately Houston has begun to destroy some of the older establishments to make room for new and improved ones. I for one am sad to see Died's on Westheimer go as it was one of my favorite hangouts in Houston. I don't live in Houston but spend a lot of time doing business here. The Diedrich's on Westheimer was the perfect place to meet both clients and friends. The coffee is outstanding. It is actually the only coffee I will bothering drinking in Houston. Regardless of the rude service everyone speaks of, stop in the Montrose location and try the Kenyan AA, Huehuetenango (de Guatemala), anything from the Pacific Islands, and if they ever have it again, the Panamanian estate coffee is divine. They have good mixed drinks, cappuccinos, and teas as well, but the single origin coffees are what keep me coming back.

MY REVIEW: The people who work at Deidrich in this location are the most rude I have ever seen in my life. Be sure not to ask them for coffee or cream, they will bite your head off. It appears that they don't want to work, they just want to stand there at the counter, scowl, and ignore people. I guess as much as I didn't want to, I'll be going to S*tarbucks when I want coffee from now on. At least their employees have good attitudes and smiles on their faces.
Deidrich's coffee is not tasty enough that it's worth it. I can't put up with the nasty attitudes, and I refuse to spend one more dime here.

MY REVIEW: WiFi is sometimes shaky or off and the cappuccino a bit bitter, but I love that place anyway. It's right on Westheimer, yet it feels like a mini-vacation to sit on the patio or to get a table inside - that is if you are lucky. They are very crowded. The cake slices are huge, the staff is always friendly and pretty quick.

MY REVIEW: The Coffee is AWESOME!!, I love it, but the staff has been rude more often than not... I have actually stopped going there due to the staff. Every now and then I will stop in to see if the staff has changed.. so far the staff has been consistantly rude, so I will wait another month or two beofre trying again. It is such a shame, as the coffee is so wonderfull and yet, I will go to S*tarbuck's just to get decent and polite service.. Hopefully the owners will eventually catch on and remedy this.

MY REVIEW: This is the first real coffee house I have visited in Houston, it is really nice. Let me make a few things clear: (1) I am from New Orleans, where we take our coffee very seriously, (2) I worked at a coffee shop in New Orleans, (3) I worked at the best coffee shop in New Orleans, (4) and everyone who said the service was terrible at Diedrich's can go back to sucking on S*tarbuck's fuzzy nipple. They serve iced coffee, which they cold drip properly, it is good. This is of utmost importance to a New Orleans coffee snob; really, nothing is more important. What they don't do is add vanilla extract after they drip it to cut the bitterness, but PJ's was guarding that secret until I just let it out, so I guess they aren't in the know, so I'll let them slip on that. The ambience is great, the wireless is fast, energy plugs are abundant and the music doesn't suck and isn't blaring. It's clean, they have enough people working the counters so that the line is never more than a few people, and they stay out of your business if you want to sit down and get things done. There is nothing I hate more than an annoying barista who's asking you if he can get you something when it's very clear you DON'T NEED ANYTHING, and if you did you would GET UP and ASK FOR IT from the counter. Needless to say, Diedrich's does not do this.
For all of these reasons and more, it is a very nice place, and I HIGHLY recommend it to ANY coffee snobs. For all of you poor disillusioned plebes who like S*tarbucks - I pity you, but don't expect a barista making minimum wage to chipper up like a freakin' furred tree rodent every time you walk through the door. It's coffee people.

MY REVIEW: (I've been 100's of times but I don't give out my name.)
I like Diedrich. If it wasn't for this place most people in Houston wouldn't know what a mid 90's northwest coffee shop looks like. The coffee isn't that good or bad... it's MUCH better than you know who. This place is more than a coffee shop. It's a landmark.

MY REVIEW: Very good mild coffee, this time around it was Costa Rican. Tasted wonderful, not bitter, perfectly brewed. I also had the key lime pie. Amazing. Worth every bit of the $3.75 I paid. Friendly service and free wi-fi! The place was packed with laptops and extension cords running along the floors.

MY REVIEW: Love the place, love the ambiance, employees treat customers as friends, offer a variety of coffee's day-to-day which are generally good and some very good. Latte's are great. Only wish they would put some money into building repair and maintenance. Whenever it rains heavily, the ceiling leaks; they have a potentially nice patio/deck area that should be upgraded.

MY REVIEW: Okay, not everyone at the Montrose location knows my name, but they try darn hard to know "my drink." The coffee, cameraderie, and consistently great coffee will keep me coming back, even though my sister works at *St*rbucks*!!!
The daily blends (love La Lucie), chai tea, and lattes are all good, and how can you not love a coffee shop that encourages self-expression (not corporate face-less-ness in it's baristas?)
The Montrose spot is where it's at!

MY REVIEW: Wow, can't believe the negative reviews...I've been to other Diedrich's (westheimer location, etc.) and haven't been that impressed, but the staff at the Montrose location make an average coffee morning a REALLY GREAT WAKE-UP STOP. They're professional, upbeat (but not annoyingly-hyper) and try to remember your order if you visit regularly.
Coffee is coffee and baristas are baristas, but a combination of Good Coffee and Baristas with Personality is worth return visits!

MY REVIEW: i had heard wonderful things about Diedrich. The place isn't so wonderful. as for atmosphere, it isn't large enough to have good atmosphere. it was a little late in the evening and there was nowhere to sit except outside, which is fine, becuase we wanted a cigarette and there is no smoking inside, but it was soo bloody cold it was ridiculous. The servers were not the most cheerful bunch. they screwed up our orders. i ordered a small capuccino and my friend ordered a large latte with soy milk instead of real, and he switched the sizes and made them last out of five and we were the first to order. we weren't even on the same ticket, which would have made it understandable at least. He was also condescending when making small talk while we waited. (maybe it was the green and pink and blue hair of my friend and i(her green, me the rest). It's one of the most frighteningly trendy coffee shops i've ever been in. everyone inside looked like rich uber-young yuppies, despite the punk rock show adverts on the bulletin board. Our small group felt extremely out of place and the coffee left somewhat to be desired. I've had instant capuccinos from the conveniece store that tasted better. tonight we're going to try agora. hopefully it's better. i hear good things there too. but then again, supposedly diedrich was "absolutely amazing"

MY REVIEW: I love my little Diedrich coffee shop! I go there several times a week because I am so addicted to the Cafe Mochas. I start craving them about 2 oclock in the afternoon and by 5 that's all I can think about. I think the place is great. It has a cozy atmosphere and the staff is so friendly. I love to go there to sit and read. The smell is heavenly! Diedrich in Clear Lake is the best.

MY REVIEW: After reading the previous negative reviews about how bad the service is at the inner loop locals, I felt I should put in a good word for the folks at the Clear Lake location. They're always quick to say hello as you enter the store and I've yet to encounter any bad attitudes. My only complaint is that they've cut back on the amount of available desserts, but the cakes and pastries that they do offer are tasty and the coffee is always fresh. Star-you-know-who may have a store on practically every corner in town, but Deidrich's Clear Lake is my coffee shop of choice.

MY REVIEW: This place far exceeds any [another place]'s coffee shop! The coffee is GREAT, the atmosphere is relaxing and the people are friendly. I did some research and it seems Diedrich Coffee is a recognized member of the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) which means their coffee is undoubtedly some of the best in the nation ([that other one] IS NOT recognized by the SCAA). I proclaim myself a devoted Diedich follower!

MY REVIEW: This coffeehouse is exceptional! The cappuccinos are scrumptious and the music played is really an asset! As soon as I walk in, I am greeted by the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee, delightful classical music, and friendly staff. The music is so captivating that I hate to leave. Sometimes the volume is a little too low, so I can barely hear it. It creates such a relaxing atmosphere, please raise the volume just a little higher. The staff is always so helpful and the service is excellent! My week doesn't seem complete without a visit to this place! Bravo!
