MY REVIEW: Have eaten here many times over the past 10+ years. Always excellent. Quiet on this Tuesday night. Efficient service and all three of us enjoyed all of our sushi. Very fresh and generous portions.

MY REVIEW: The Sushi Club of Houston visited Kaneyama's Japanese Restaurant 3 times during January 2008. A total of 94 people posted their opinions. Here are the overall reviews from our club -

A. Greatest and Most Consistent Comment - Sushi is fresh. The decor of the restaurant is pleasing. Value was great for the money.

B. Most Consistent Complaint - Our group needed additional wait staff to assist our group with iced tea refills, soy sauce refills, etc.

C. Would the Sushi Club Members Return? 91% said 'Yes.' 3% said 'No.' 6% were unsure.

D. How was the parking? 95% said 'Fine.' 5% said "They need more parking spaces!"

An overwhelming majority of sushi club members will return and so will the Sushi Club of Houston.

MY REVIEW: Our server was outstanding. Really sweet, we never had to wait or ask for anything! The food (sushi, tempura, etc). was all wonderful. The only negative was I think the place needs a good cleaning. There was a really horrible odor and I noticed that the rugs looked dirty, and the tables looked kinda grimy, the odor was so bad we almost left. Cross between old fish and dirty diapers. Anyway we stayed and after awhile to odor went away somewhat. I would give them an A+ if they improved on their cleanliness.

MY REVIEW: My friend and I just happened in this place one night when the Japanese place he was going to take me to was closed. And man are we glad that other place was closed! We love it here. We've been several times and I've now made it my #1 place to eat. Love the Julie roll and the Spider roll. Everything we've tried so far is fabulous!! We've decided that every time we go we're going to try one new roll in addition to our favs. The staff is very friendly and helpful, food comes out in a timely manner. Would definitely recommend!!

MY REVIEW: This is our second time we tried out Kaneyama. Since sushi is my boy friend's favorite foods and my friends recommend this place so I made a reservation for Valentine's Day. We expected service and food might take longer because restaurant was so crowded however every thing came very quick while we were enjoying our conversation. Sushi was very fresh and fabulous. "Jully Roll" and "Poseidon Roll" are our favorite!!! Even though such a busy night, Sushi chef created special roll upon our request. Over all we had a wonderful experience. This year, we couldn't try their Valentine's special but I will definitely make a reservation for next year's Valentine's Day to try their specials.

MY REVIEW: Most of the time I order my food to go. It takes them about half an hour to give me my food, even though I always order it ahead of time and even when they are not busy. On the other hand I think the food is great!!!!!!

MY REVIEW: On the surface, the place seems a good deal -- reasonable price, wide selection and clean. But the food is inconsistent -- I had the donburri and bento on 2 separate visits and the best I can say is that it was OK. I ordered the katsu-don donburri which a mixture of fried pork cutlet, eggs, onions, etc. on a large bowl of rice. The pork was over cooked and dry like it had been in the freezer too long. I also had the teriyaki chicken bento which was a small piece of chicken topped with some sweet soy sauce -- I could had made this at home. In both visits, the staff messed up my order and I had to wait almost 30 minutes while my guess ate. The service is not good.

MY REVIEW: This was my first time to Kaneyama and it was recommended by a friend. We went for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. I must say the food was excellent and very fresh. It was done quickly. My favorite was the Red Snapper sushi pieces. EXCELLENT!!! I would recommend this to anyone looking for good quality sushi, food, service, and at a reasonable price.

MY REVIEW: I used to go there a lot when there weren't as many choices for Japanese food in Houston. Food quality is good and rather consistent. It seems that their food portion has reduced in size in the past year or so. Wait staff tends to be good, but sometimes food can come out rather slowly when they are busy.

MY REVIEW: I didn't go to Kaneyama for a while since my favorite Japanese chef passed away....However, I couldn't find any Japanese restaurant in Houston have good quality of foods as Kaneyama has, so my family went back there and OUR DINING EXPERIENCE WAS PRETTY AMASING.

I am Japanese and my family owns sushi store in Japan,so I know what is good to order in sushi place. Our waitress was very nice & polite and she recommended us their fresh special items.I was impressed by their knowledge. As her suggestions, I ordered BIG FRESH OYSTERS, UNI, and AJI TATAKI!! Everythings were so fresh and tasty. I never tried Aji before in Japan nor in the U.S because it has strong fishy taste, but the way they served this fish was amazing!! I ate sashimi part and they fried all bones so I could eat head to tale of AJI. That was great experience. Sometimes, you have to wait little longer to be served your food, but you can only find such a great authantic Japanese foods in there. I have recommended to all of my Japanese friends to try there again and they had good experiences too. If you want to try AUTHENTIC JAPANESE FOOD,you should go there. And also good to have ENTREES too. My husband is American, so he doesn't like to eat what I eat in there, but he loved their TERIYAKI STAKES!! It's sizziling!! I'll go back there again with all of my family!!

MY REVIEW: Kaneyama used to be one of my favorite restaurants to eat sushi, and my husband and I used to go there once a week for a long time. But now it's not the same restaurant for us anymore. All my Japanese friends and I used to think that they have pretty decent Japanese food for the price (Yes, I'm a Japanese so I know what I'm talking about!) but no one goes there. The food (especially sushi) is bad, they bumped up the price big time and the service are below average. I've heard that the Japanese sushi chef who was working at Kaneyama for a long time passed away so they've been using different cheffs. Apparently they're still using the same fish suppliers but the fish tastes TOUGH and not so fresh because they're cutting the fish in a wrong way. I don't think many non-Japanese people could notice stuff like that but Japanese people stopped going there all together. I don't eat there like I used to but I still get some sushi-to-go from there sometimes. But there are more problems. THEY CAN NEVER GET MY ORDER RIGHT NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I ASK THEM TO REPEAT THE LIST!!! I'm not exaggerating. Some waitress can't even tell the difference between sushi or sashimi / handroll or roll!!! C'mon, that's the basic of working at sushi restaurant, HELLO!! Actaully I had to take my sushi back to them yesterday because they screwed my order AGAIN. I should just stop going there all together. I also heard that the same people owns the place but they keep changing the management. It's a bag sign... If you want the real deal, go to T*eppei or S*asaki on Westheimer. As far as I'm concerned, Kaneyama is in the same restaurant category as M*iyako or J*apon..."Japanese Food by Chinese and Vietnamese people"

MY REVIEW: Good food, at times you may wait a while for service, and then longer for your food, once I had waited almost an hour just for some sushi and I asked for a refill on my coke and they said "I'm sorry I will have to charge you, I laughed and said "ok whatever". He could tell by that I was dissapointed and ended up taking it off my bill. It doesn't really make much difference when the bill is 70 dollars. They also gave us free ice cream for the long wait. We are regulars though, I dont know if they are as hospitable to everyone.

MY REVIEW: I visited Kaneyama for a friend's birthday, and our experience was disappointing and infuriating. Our server was condescending and unhelpful. The restaurant was out of several fishes, and the waiter failed to mention this until we ordered items that had the items included. The food came out extremely slowly - it took almost 2 hours to get all of our food to the table, and some of what we ordered never came out, but the restaurant charged us for it on our bill. What we did eat tasted great, but I would redirect anyone thinking of eating at Kaneyama elsewhere due to the atrocious service experience.

MY REVIEW: Kaneyama has been open for more than ten years, and there is a reason why. The food is fresh (for Japanese standards-decent) and the prices aren't too shabby. I don't recommend anything on the menu except the sushi and sashimi. I generally prefer rolls and the Julie Roll (not the exact name but Julie was part of the name) is very pleasing. It's not a traditional roll, but cruncy tempura on the outside just simply rocks.

Please don't mistake all the wait staff as Japanese. I've heard a fair share of Chinese between some of the co-workers. I'm not degrading the quality, but I don't want people to think this is authentic Japanese. But for good food for solid prices, Kaneyama is recommended.

MY REVIEW: I used to go to kaneyama every weekend. Their food used to be very fresh; portions used to be reasonable; waitstaff used to be cheerful, friendly, and helpful; the manager used to make customers feel so welcome and important, he remembered everyone's name; but in the past few months, I have been very disappointed; I was there this past Friday evening; disappointed again at everything that used to be good; but the most upsetting was they cut their portions drastically in almost all their dishes; the most ridiculous was the caterpilla roll which became something like the cumcumber roll - RIDICULOUS! My family and I suspected that there had been a change in management; but we have decided not to visit kaneyama again; if the owner doesn't know how to run a restaurant business, he better stays out of it instead of ripping customers off by cutting their portions and providing terrible services.

MY REVIEW: i am a big sushi eater, and I often have sushi at least twice a week. Kaneyama is one of the restaurants that I frequently visit. Recently my visits to Kaneyama have been horrible. The waitstaff seems a bit pushy and not at all helpful. The chefs have no personality, and the rolls are sloppy. I used to highly recommend kaneyama to people, but there seems to be nothing good to say. Maybe the owner needs to spend more time with his employees.

MY REVIEW: I "found" Kaneyama just three weeks ago and I've already been there five times. This place is the best. What brings me back? The food and the service. I don't qualify for everybody knowing my name...based on times there...but they do. They made a point to say hello and the sushi chefs wave a hello. I certainly recommend sitting at the bar but the service is great throughout. Oh.. and the Maki Rolls are the best in town.

MY REVIEW: I love this place, I've tried so many other sushi places in and around Houston, but can't beat the freshness and price of Kaneyama. My favorite here is the dynamite roll, must say its the best in town! Veggie tempura is also quite good here, although it's a tiny serving, barely enough for 2. Atmosphere is inviting and friendly.

MY REVIEW: for someone who has been an ardent sushi fan all her life, this restaurant is a wonderful marriage of consistent quality and price! my friends and i go on almost a weekly basis, and the service is always warm and friendly and the seafood always fresh. the tai and nama sake sashimi are so tender that they fall apart with buttery consistency. a few favourites: red snapper sashimi with spicy ponzu sauce (very refreshing), kaneyama roll (crunchy, light and sweet), shrimp tempura, wasabi tobiko (very interesting, must try), teapot soup, and the dynamite roll. for two, the check usually averages around $60, gratuity not inclusive. i live inside the loop, but this restaurant is worth the weekly drive and is so much better than the trendy and over-rated k*bo's in the village. best in houston, bar none!

MY REVIEW: I have been to Kaneyama several times and I have refered this resturant to many of my friends. My last visit there was an awful experience. My family and friends and I were setted in one of the private rooms and we were not told that there was a 40 dollar room chare. When the bill came we were very surprised so I kindly asked told the manager that we were not informed about the room charge. Instead of the manager working with us as customers, he laughed in our faces and told us that is how it is. I was very upset, i have NEVER been treated this way before. They should inform their customers about the rules of the resturant, we were NEVER told. He ended up just chargeing us 20 dollars for the room and loosing customers. I am very dissatisfied with their service. This is not the way any business should be run, I want to send out a complaint and make sure that no one else has to experience what we experienced. It is terrible management and something should be done about it.

MY REVIEW: Great Service! We're very satisfied with the food (especially their BENTO)... we can't help but keep on coming back to Kaneyama. I've tried 4 Japanese restaurants in Houston, but Kaneyama is the best in service, food and especially the PRICE!
