MY REVIEW: I ordered a tuna salad sandwich on rye with swiss cheese. I paid extra for the cheese, which was fine. However, if you want lettuce and tomato on your sandwich you need to pay more. That is ridiculous. This was my first time there and since the tuna spread was so bland I will not go back. Save your money and go to any other better sandwich shops.

MY REVIEW: I don't know how others can rave about the food. I'm not the least impressed with it. The potato salad is okay, but everything else is extremely bland. The service is definitely lacking except for the hispanic guy. He actually smiles. No one else does and the older blond haired man needs lessons in personality! He doesn't have one and is very rude and condescending. I'll eat elsewhere because I WON'T BE BACK to this place! I'm treated much nicer at other places and I'd rather spend my hard-earned money at those places.

MY REVIEW: I have been a Nielsen's customer since the late 60s. Their food is predictably the same each visit...superb, especially their potato salad, and roast beef sandwiches with thier own version of mayoish "spread". However, I do not ever recall in all my visits there anticipating great conversation or owner acknowledgement, but I also cannot recall 'that' being a personal necessity I would expect from any deli. Want great food and low fanfare? Nielsen's will fulfill the cravings.

MY REVIEW: I am surprised to see the negative comments about the blond gentleman. He is always nice to me, and responds to me whenever I engage him in conversation. Seems to me that what others are saying about him being rude may be him keeping his nose to the grindstone and working.

MY REVIEW: I have been going to Nielsen's since 1992 and have never had a bad meal....the chicken salad is the best ever. I have moved jobs to downtown and I still make the time to go to the Deli at least once or twice a month now, but they do know me by name. the service behind the counter (order takers) are wonderful and friendly. The blond guy at the counter is not friendly at all... althought when I went just last week he was not at the cash register so it was very pleasant to get the younger hispanic guy. He is super nice.

MY REVIEW: The man at the counter everyone seems to talk about isn't very outgoing, but I've never seen him be rude. I bet it's probably the other way around. It's usually customers who nag and are abusive. Anyways, the sandwiches and potato salad are so good and so addicting that even if the dude punched me out I'd still go back for more.

MY REVIEW: I still remember when I was growing up, on Sundays, we always stopped by Nielsen's after church for potatoe salad, deviled eggs, and brownies. Grown up now, I still stop by Nielsen's every Sunday for the best potatoe salad in town. Thanks Nielsen's you are the best!!

MY REVIEW: Nielsen's is the best Deli. in Houston. I have been going since the early 70's and they still have the best food in town. Keep up the good work.

MY REVIEW: I will admit that Nielsen's get very busy at lunchtime but the whole crew seems to work together to get the people in and out. I only have 45 minutes for lunch so in and out works for me!

P.S. The potatoe salad is the greatest!!

MY REVIEW: I have been out of town for 2 years. The first thing I wanted when I came back to Houston was a turkey sandwich from Nielsen's. It was as good as I remembered. The homemade spread and the real turkey breast was just as I remembered. I also tried the pasta salad. It was so good, I asked for the recipe. No such luck. They would not give it out. I will be back soon.

MY REVIEW: I agree with the last comment. The stocky blonde haired man working the cash register must be the original owners son or gandson. He is unfriendly and does not smile to any of the loyal customers. He glady takes your money just to receive the next customer in line. I remember as a child going to Nielsen's and the elderly lady (the owner) glady helping prepare our order. I truly miss those days of personal and friendly service.

MY REVIEW: Having counted on Neilsen's for more than 40 years for excellent sandwiches, convenient access, and pleasant efficiency, I was suprised recently to see all the negative comments. Wish I hadn't ignored them, but I would never have believed them if I hadn't experienced it all for myself.

Earlier this week I ordered a sandwich mid-morning and stopped by to pick it up aat 12.30p. Service was excessivly slow (a 20-minute wait); it wasn't what was ordered (large instead of junior sandwich; chips missing from the bag aaltogether; and I (over)paid for what I didn't get just to flee as fast as ppossible from the astonishing rude man waiting on the customer line.

Breathtakingly rude to each customer in turn, as I watched and waited for my own sandwich. Others in line whimpered a little at the abuse, and the man behind the counter simply said "good, don't come back." (And its true, too, that great mustard does seem to have been swapped for a limper cheaper blend). Too bad. Another customer lost . . .. I won't be back either.

MY REVIEW: The prices have become totally outrageous and the quantity of food has become quite smaller. Not only was the price bad, but we placed an order to go for 3 sandwiches 2 side orders and the order was all wrong. The man at the counter was rude and I found this very different from past experiences. Well $26.00 later and a bad taste in our mouth, we doubt we will go back.

MY REVIEW: Until this afternoon, I used to go to this place every couple weeks. When my parents came to town they always wanted to stop by for a sandwich. I loved the homemade mayo and their fabulous deli meats. This afternoon I stopped by for a roast beef and instead of their usual fabulous roast beef and homemade mayo I got what tasted like mayonnaise and mustard mixed together to look like their homemade mayo and roast beef that looked and tasted like it had just come from the grocery store deli aisle. I don't know if they have changed ownership or what but it was not at all like ANY of my past visits.

MY REVIEW: I've been going to this place at least 25 years and it never fails to satisfy. It's not only one of the best, if not the best, delicatessen in Houston, it's probably one of the best in the country. There are only 3 drawbacks: there's only one location, the crowds (at times) and having to decide what I want (there isn't anything on the menu that isn't superb).

Back when I was in management, whenever our corporate bosses came to town, we'd propose that rather than waste time going to a restaurant, we work thru lunch and send out for box lunches from "a pretty good deli" we knew about. The suits from NY were always a bit leery of a deli in Houston, but as soon as they dug into their sandwiches and sides, they began raving about the food and our reviews always went very well! We got brownie points not only because we "worked" thru lunch but because the food was so good, plus the suits could catch their flights out without having to rush thru our sessions. Thank you Nielsen's.

MY REVIEW: If you haven't tried Neilsen's Deli you must do so promptly. Their bread is fresh and soft, the meats are savory, the cheeses to die for, and the mayonaise is homemade. The sandwiches are piled about 3" high with thinly sliced deli meat and you have your choice of vegies and a variety of cheeses from around the world. I recomend the corned beef with danish cheese on wheat bread. They also make awesome potato salad.

So if you're looking for small town hospitality in the big city, look no further than Neilsen's Deli.

MY REVIEW: This place still has the best chicken salad in town! At work we used to send someone out to buy a loaf of bread and big bag of chips while someone else headed to Nielsen's to get a tub of chicken salad. Mmmmmmmmmm.
