Frenchie's

MY REVIEW: Frenchie's was recommended by a friend as one of those local landmark-type restaurants. The food, overall, was fairly bland and generic tasting. Not that I would know what authentic Italian is by any means, but I think B*uca di Beppo is better by far. Total tab for our group of four was about $110 with no appetizers ordered and one dessert shared...just entrees really. There are alot of other places I'd have preferred eating at for that much spent or even less. As for the service, our waitress seemed to be indifferent to us even being there...like waiting on us was an afterthought. After she took our orders, we didn't see her again until forever when our food was finally ready. She never once checked up on us or came back to reassure us that everything would be coming out soon. Normally, I don't care too much about subpar service as long as the food is good, but in this case both were disappointing to say the least. I'd be willing to give it a another try though; maybe the sandwiches for lunch are better.

MY REVIEW: Frenchie's is the best Italian restaurant in Clear Lake! The food is fabulous! The only real fettuccini alfredo you can find in this area and it's devine! Try the meatball casserole, you won't be disappointed. don't forget the cheesecake for dessert, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth, wonderful! Really busy at lunch, so get there early. Perfect romantic place for dinner. Family owned, cozy, and friendly. They will even sing "Happy Birthday" to you in italian! Frankie has my heart!

MY REVIEW: Maybe it's a waiter-specific thing, but my two friends and I had SUPERB service, very prompt, with good advice. Great food, drinkable wine, for a very reasonable price. The mussels and the grilled lamb special was fabulous. Real local color and everyone in the restaurant seemed to care that we had a good time. We'll be back.

MY REVIEW: I absolutly love this restraunt. I have never had a problem with service. THe owner is always pleasant and takes time to welcome me and my family. I ussually order the chicken crepes. They are excellent. The only problem is you can ussually only order them for lunch, because by dinner they are sold out. Only suggestion...do not bring small children. (I found that out the first time) Great place for "date night"

MY REVIEW: Never got a chance to eat. Sat at our table for 15 minutes. The girl bussing the table gave us a glass of water. After 15 minutes NO ONE asked for an order, be it wine, appetizer or dinner.
The food might be great but I will never visit a restaurant that ignores their clients. I spend alot of money at restaurants, and Frenchie's will not get any of mine. Absolutely insulting

MY REVIEW: During lunchtime (1200-200) , the place is packed and if you are in a hurry, call in your order or go for fast food because at this time of the day no where is quick service that has "decent" food. The sandwiches are melt in your mouth, but my lunch time favorite is the ham & cheese crepes add the the free bread and a tasty salad it is a bargain for my tastebuds. For dinner, I suggest Shrimp Champagne and the chocolate almondine(sp) cake or mousse au chocolate is wonderful to finish off a romantic dinner. The employees are quite busy and do not always have time to chat but I prefer hot and excellently prepared dishes to someone hanging over me while my dish gets cold.
Dinner service on the weekends is full service but again the emphasis is on the food. If there is a problem with your food, they will give you something else with no argument. I have always had an enjoyable experience at this restaurant and I visited there off and on for almost 16 years. I have visited their other location in Seabrook called V*illa Capri and found it to be a charming and romantic (and quite a bit newer facility)location on the bay that can be rented/leased for special occasions.

MY REVIEW: This place is awesome! Frenchies, although a small place, has character. You can tell it's a good place because the owner is actually there! Definitely cares about his guests. They have the best lasagna I have ever tasted in my life! Open for lunch as well as dinner. Great date spot. Lunches are excellent as well. Terrific roast beef sandwich. You will not leave hungry! Prices are reasonable.

MY REVIEW: Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! They have the best Italian food of anyone anywhere that I have tasted. If you don't go, you are truly missing out. We ALWAYS have leftovers. They are not skimpy with their portions in the least.

MY REVIEW: Some people just don't get it.....this place is a classic!!! Yes, it's chaotic and crazy there sometimes...but that's half the charm. It's not thing fancy and the bathrooms are tired, but who the heck cares. The food is top notch...fresher than fresh...immense portions...perfectly prepared and more than reasonably priced. Yes, the service can be distant...but that's usually because the place is ALWAYS busy (gee I wonder why)...just don't plan on being in a rush. Frankie, Anna and Mario are all classic Italians and service runs in their blood. It's been in business for 30 years and there's a reason for that....its THE BEST!!!!!

MY REVIEW: Food is excellent! Their presentation desperately needs help. Everyone thus far has commented on the waitstaff. I agree, they're pathetic. They tend to pay more attention to old family friends and local celebs than the unfamiliar faces. Again, the food overshadows the service and it's tolerable. It can have it's moments--even on some nights you can hear Mario (the head chef) berating the cooks and waitstaff. It sort of adds that extra touch to a nice dining experience.

MY REVIEW: Pros: One of my all time favorites in Clear Lake. IMHO, has the best antipasto in Houston. It used to get all sorts of clean restaurant awards from Marvin Zindler. Cons: With that said, it's noisy (though it's not because of a loudspeaker-just its small size and the fact that the tables are crammed close together.) It often gets too crowded at lunch - which is why a to go order is more ideal at lunch. Food has had its ups and downs over the years. They do over do the melted cheese on some items. The decor is sort of run down looking. Some of the staff always seem to be a little more pleasant to the 'pseudo Clear Lake celebrities' or the NASA cronies than to anyone else.

MY REVIEW: This is our favorite restaurant in houston! My hubby and I almost always order the specials of the day and we have never been let down. We were there recently for my birthday and were *very* taken care of.
I love this place! It's cozy, clean, and the food is amazing! The waitstaff is a little slow, but we don't mind taking the extra time to enjoy our meal.

MY REVIEW: I’ve never understood the raving some do about this restaurant. We’ve been eating here since it opened. Many of their dishes are good but some aren’t (if you like eating a slice of melted cheese you’ll love their quiche).
I think the fascination is the quirky owners/operators and the ambiance created by the disorganization, congestion and New York City style cramped tables.
I agree with everything NASA Nerd said except, with the filthy ceilings and restrooms I’m not as comfortable as he is they’re clean.

MY REVIEW: This review is for Lunch Time:
Pros: Great food, reasonably priced, generous portions
Cons: - Absolutely lousy service. One of the owners, Frankie, is the rudest person in the world. If he is doing anything, regardless of how trivial, he will leave you standing at the counter for 30 minutes.. while he does nothing. They give you a receipt with a number on it... but when the food is ready... they mumble on a low volume PA speaker... "Lasagna is ready!". And guess what... ALL people that ordered Lasagna go to the counter to pick p their food - major CHAOS. Why not call the number.
- Although the place is clean... it is a dump and run down. The Men's restroom is disgusting and extemely small. Tom Cruise was recently at NASA.. and ate at Frenchie's in the evening. The owner was so embarrased by the Mens restroon he made Tom use the Ladie's restroom. This is no rumor.. the owner told me this.
Summary: If the food was not so outstanding... I dont think anyone would go as it is not worth the trouble. I know I would not. Like others have said... the dinner meals are outstanding but very expensive.

MY REVIEW: "Good Taste" below knows not of what (s)he speaks, or tastes. This place is just plain awful. Bland pasta, insipid salads, lackluster desserts and lousy service. With its attractive(?) display of snack items common to a gas station when you enter, you can't tell if they are trying to downplay their former image of "fine dining", or just don't care. The price has certainly not been lowered. I do agree with "Good Taste" on one issue. The food was better than one meal I have had in Italy. That meal sent me to the hospital with food poisoning! I am sure that it holds some nostalgic meaning (the NASA photos are interesting)to lots of folks. However, like the Andrea Doria, it just isn't going out to sea anymore.

MY REVIEW: This place has simply gone down hill. The wait staff is hardly around. We ordered appetizers and they never showed up. Since the wait is usually kind of long from the time you order until the food arrives, we just kept waiting and waiting. The waiter finally arrived and was gone again before we could ask for what we needed. I agree that they need better waiters!

MY REVIEW: If you haven't been to Frenchie's Restaurant, you've missed out on one of the truly memorable eating experiences in the Houston area. Located at 1041 NASA Rd. in a small shopping strip almost hidden by another "clone Asian buffet monstrosity", is a small unassuming haven rich in talent and history. When you enter, in front of you is a typical sandwich ordering area staged for quick take out orders. While not notably attractive, the take out fare is very tasty and large portioned. To your left is a moderate sized dining area, well set and comfortable. To your right is a small dining area filled with NASA space memorablilia, most which are autographed and cover every mission ever attempted. While the extensive space collection is impressive, the real treat is the food. The salads are all made with the freshest vegetables I've ever had at ANY REATAURANT and come with a house Italian dressing that is truly a masterpiece of blended herbs. While some reviewers may complain about being served hot garlic bread, they choose to leave out the freshness and quality of the bread, which is out-of-this-world. (By the way, we've never been charged for our bread - EVER). The sandwiches are huge and filled with quality meats, cheeses, and speciality items (Ya gotta try the meatballs). The pasta dishes are quite outstanding and are filled with beef, sausage and more cheese that bubbles at the table. Our favorite is the lasagne which never gets cold and is heaped with cheese and sausage. The seafood dishes are quite good as well, with the Frutti d'Mar portions more than most can finish. There is an ample supply of wines to complement the meal and are very good. We've never had dessert as we've never had room because of the large portions. While I will to grant the reader that the service can be inconsistant (due to the individual server), we've never had poor service or a bad meal. The restaurant is extremely clean, the quality of food is outstanding, and the owner is a pleasure to talk with. I HIGHLY reccommend this establishment to anyone who enjoys authentic Italian food at a very reasonable price. And to those reviewers who choose to pan this restuarant, I sincerely doubt if they recognize good food and value.

MY REVIEW: Well, we thought we would give this place another try, but the same experience again. The waiters are simply awful. I think I have received better service at M*cDonalds. They do not remember ANYTHING you order, and are quitre favorable to certain customers. I am sure that the more favored customers are thinking the same thing. What is totally crazy is how they can actually charge you for garlic bread that you don't order. They bring it to your table and viola..your charged! This place has good food, but GET BETTER WAITERS PLEASE!!!

MY REVIEW: My mom and I have visited this establishment several times. The veal/chicken Marsela, spagetti carbonara, osso bucco, and lamb chops are very good. The service is always friendly in the family run place. We will return, frequently.

MY REVIEW: Our senior citizen group frequently enjoys dining out. Our group usually travels with canes, walkers and wheelchairs. After a dining experience, our group rates the restaurant. Last week we tried Frenchie’s Italian Restaurant.
ATOMSPHERE: Cozy
SERVICE: Excellent wait staff! Friendly and attentive!
FOOD: Great bread! Everyone’s meal was correct and hot. Everything was excellent from the lasagna to the eggplant. All the sauces were fantastic!
ACCESSIBLITY FOR DISABLED: good
OTHER COMMENTS: This was our first visit to a restaurant in the Clear Lake area. What a treat! We came to the area for the hot air balloon festival but all everyone talked about was the great meal and terrific service.

MY REVIEW: A lot is said about the Italian Food, which is great. What must be noted are the lunch sandwiches. Homemade bun and a homemade creamy/mayo like dressing. The Roast Pork sandwich is one of my all time favorites.

MY REVIEW: The food here is truly outstanding. However, for being such frequent customers the service really did begin to go down hill. Waiters take too long to get to tables, bread is hard to come by. Seems like the food wasn't as good as it used to be. There is a woman who helps with the bread/drinks, and she is hard to get help from too. The food is good, but who has time to wait when you are hungry and in a hurry?

MY REVIEW: Unassuming from the outside, but the BEST Italian food in Houston! The last time the President of Italy was in town, this is where he had dinner. We live in Kingwood and drive to Clear Lake every couple of weeks, just to eat at Frenchie's. HINT: The menu is great, but the specials are to die for. You might have to ask what the specials are. Try the Salmon Vennezia (sp?) or the Paparadelli Gambrionni (sp?) from the specials. Occasionally, they will have limited orders of Osso Buco, prepared properly (4 days). Excellent sauces on everything. In case you are wondering how an Italian restaurant got the name Frenchie's, it was the name on the sign when they took over that location years ago and they chose to spend money on the kitchen rather than the sign. Good decision! Hidden at the back of the center at Nasa Rd. 1 and El Camino Real down from Baskin & Robbins. Dress can be from shorts and golf shirt to evening attire. Oh, I almost forgot. They make their own bread.
