MY REVIEW: Truly the strong point with this very upscale eatery is the food quality. This is not a cheap place for a meal. On this visit, there were 6 at the table for dinner. The service is prompt and very knowledgeable. I would have liked a little more time to look over the menu before the waiter started to take our order. But, that was just me. The steaks were cooked correctly and had a great flavor. I had a small piece of sea bass and a small lobster tail. Both were perfect.

The wine selection by the bottle is broad. The by-the-glass selection is limited but of good quality. Desserts are seriously good. Try the chocolate cake. It was a hit with all at the table.

I would suggest stopping by the bar for a cocktail. The bar staff have perfect service and people skills. They take the time to find out not just what you want but how you like your drink. Well worth the stop.

Only negative item, it is noisy. So don't go there wanting romantic conversation. This place is full of life with lot's of action.

MY REVIEW: The strong points were the food. I went with a group for lunch. The appetizer "tree" was wonderful, a variety of different tastes all perfectly cooked. The salad wasn't that impressive, but it still tasted wonderful. I had the beef tenderloin with mushrooms. I thought the beef was a little chewy, but only slightly. It still tasted great. The mushrooms were very tiny, cut up into little bits, batter fried and very salty. I would have liked to see larger portebellos since that IS what the menu said was being served. I would have also liked to see more garnish or some vegetables on the plate with the meat and fried mushroom. The weak points - white table napkins! When your guests are wearing black slacks or suits it would be wise to have black napkins available. I was quite suprised that this wasn't available at Americas. I don't particularly like white fuzz on my slacks after eating my lunch. The glasses were a little spotty. Otherwise the cutlery was spotless, plates were clean. The bathrooms were very clean. The ambiance and lighting was nice, but the music was a little too loud for my liking. I would prefer if 3 waiters weren't hovering around our table the entire meal. Perhaps stand back out of our view so we can enjoy our company and our food without feeling like you're staring at us. lol Overall, the food was wonderful. I wish I had saved room for dessert!

MY REVIEW: 3rd visit. Food is always good, albiet a little over-priced.

It can get quite noisy in the restaurant, so not good for a quiet date. This is the type of place thats good for business dinners, family get-togethers and friends.

I have tried the steak, tuna, chicken (we swapped dishes) and all were excellent. Desserts are also good, I recommend the Pio XV (a bread pudding dessrt).

MY REVIEW: Americas is definitely the best restaurant in Houston if you incorporate all the factors, service, food quality, price, ambiance, and the restuarant interior itself.

The high points. The food itself is of exceptional quality. The best Paella we have ever eaten. The desserts were very good. The interior of the restaurant is probably an attraction by itself compared to other restaurants in Houston and surrounding areas. A must when hosting out of town guests.

The average points. The service is good but at times average. If you have to change your reservations, good luck. They may stick you in a corner by the kitchen doors.

The low points. The cost is the only drawback to this place. You are getting great food but be prepared to spend about $40 to $60 per person with minimal drinks.

Overall. Defnitely the best place to eat in Houston. That is if you like South American food.

MY REVIEW: We have been to Americas on many occasions, anniversary's, birthdays, family in town an have always been pleased. With another birthday around the corner we made reservations for 7:30 on a Monday for their 5 course, 5 wine $55.00 special. The Monday of they called and we confirmed . We arrived at 7:20 and were told that our table was not ready and they ie us a little buzzer. No problem as we waited at the bar. At 7:45 e we go to the hostess stand to check and as we wait another patron is complaining that his party had 7:00 reservations and they have waited over 45 minutes and still nothing. The hostess said the manger would be right down to talk to them. Well then it was out turn and we asked how it was looking, hostess responded the manger is on her way down to talk to us. OK, we didn't ask for her but OK. Well we wait and wait. It is past 8:00 no manger,no table for the people with reservations at 7:00, everyone else entering the door is given a buzzer, things not looking good.We know that this meal is going to take some time and we are already 40 minutes past our reservation with no manger in sight and no timeline for a table. We decide to cut and run. We tell the hostess that we made 7:30 reservations and don't mind a little wait but you still can't tell us how much longer we are looking at so we are leaving. Very disappointed that they took our reservation 2 weeks in a advance and did not have a table for us. If they were booked please tell us so we could have made other reservations on a Monday night. We still may go back but there is no way we can take the chance with clients or our out of town guest knowing that a reservation means nothing to them.

MY REVIEW: Has one of the nicer dining rooms in Houston. What I've noticed is that if you do not order wine, you can be guaranteed to be rushed. I thought the cuts of meat are overpriced for the cut as the Churrascos are tenderloins and with tenderloins prime or choice is not work it anyways. Adding a "jumbo" shrimp at $5 each is crazy! When the waiter came to our table with the food, we said "where is the shrimp". He pointed to a small ramequin with small shrimp in it . We laughed, but he didn't seem to be concerned. In general, it's good food but the price points are too high for the quality and service given.

MY REVIEW: This is a great restaurant to go when you're celebrating an occasion and you want to know that it will be a special evening. Everything - food, wine, decor, service, presentation - is superb whether you go on a Monday night or a Saturday night. Favorites include the steak, lobster tail, crab finger appetizer, plantains, and a chocolate cake that's to-die-for. I believe that they've reduced portion sizes in recent years but the prices have stayed the same so you still get a lot of value for the money. My husband and I come here every year to celebrate our anniversary and we have never left Americas feeling disappointed in any way.

MY REVIEW: Americas is an excellent pick! Food was delicious with a little bit of everything to choose from and service was close to perfect. Presentation of the food was very unique. Super wine list and a great atmosphere to talk at a normal tone without any eavesdropping. Classy, very classy. I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion.

MY REVIEW: overall this place is ok but i do think they're a bit overpriced for what they offer. the food tasted fine, nothing spectacular but i feel that they serve really small proportions. for wat i paid for, i should have gotten more food. the service was ok but i did walk out of the restaurant still hungry. i had to go somewhere else after that just to get full. they had good martinis though...

i guess the only reason that i would go back is for the atmosphere. it is a social place with a nice atmosphere. a nice place to hang out. but if ur looking to get full with great food, i dont think this is the place...

MY REVIEW: Regardless of what any reviews state, I am a die hard Americas/C*hurassco's fan. I love love love the atmosphere, food and wait staff... On more than one occasion I/the party with me have been given FREE Tres LEches cards from the wait-staff, now it may be my enthusiasm when it comes to this food, or it could be the OUTSTANDING service we receive.

I love the corn smoked crab fingers, churassco steak, and Tres leches, and Cerviche, Empendadas, and Plaintains, and dip etc.... I love them all,

And I have visited M*arks on several occasions and many other fine restuants in Houston and i must say that this is on my top 3 list for Fine Dining in Houston....And I resent all of the "yuppie" comments...

MY REVIEW: I love this place. Some friends and I met up for Happy Hour and loved it. I've also been here for lunch. It's a bit pricey for lunch and dinner, but the set menu is a deal. For $14.95, you get a salad, your choice of three entrees and a dessert. Yes, the tres leches is an option for dessert.

On the night we went for Happy Hour, we were pleased with the service and loved the atmosphere. It was very crowded, but not miserable like some places. The drink specials were great and they offer a complimentary buffet that included fried fish with special dipping sauce, plantain chips and nachos.

Great mojitos!

MY REVIEW: This kids love the atmospere, we do too. The food used to be top notch, now it's just average but priced above avg. Service was nice. Ordered the puntas on the lunch menu twice recently and they were gristly in spots. Sad to see they are skimping. Happy hour may be ok, but there are better places in the same price range. Or just get a to-go at E*atzi's down the street.

MY REVIEW: My first visit to Americas and probably the last. It just didn't cut it for me. I read the reviews before going and was looking forward to "the best steak ever" and "fantastic entrees". Unfortuantely they were not on the menu that night. The food was overcooked and very highly flavored with garlic which detracts from the natural flavor.

It was pricey just above average food served in a yuppie style envronment where the sound was far too loud to have any decent converstation. The waiting staff were friendly but poorly trained. One particualr waiter kept dropping silverware, others didn't know which side to approach when serving.

In my opinion there are better steaks in Houston and certainly much cheaper steaks, you just need to get out of this yuppie area and into the real restaurants. Look no further than just up Post Oak Lane !

MY REVIEW: Had reservations for Valentines Day @ 6:45pm. We got there at 6:50pm, they sent us upstairs and seated us immediately. The waiter and helper were very attentive. I don't drink, but wife ordered a bottle of wine. I don't think it would have mattered though. I read here where people were snubbed by the waiters because they did not order wine.. I really don't think it would have mattered though. I ordered the Ceviche ($12) wife ordered the potato-leek soup with lump crab ($9). Both were excellent.. OK a little overpriced, but this is a very nice upscale restaurant.

I ordered the Chicken Breast coated in plantain's in black bean sauce ($16) and wife had Steak and Lobster ($45). They brought out a platter of vegetables that included fried plantain's, glazed carrots, and green beans.

Everything was excellent. It was romantic, tasty and the service was superb.

Maybe because it was Valentines Day, but I think this place has probably corrected any problems people here have written about.

We will go back, but since it's so pricey, it will only be for special occasions.

MY REVIEW: We were walk-ins for dinner this week but were seated promptly in a nice booth with a great view of the dining room. We started off with so-so soups, but the entrees were absolutely delicious! The menu says that the "churrascos" beef tenderloin is the best you'll ever taste and I have no argument there (and at the price, it better be). And the pork tenderloin with crab meat topping was melt-in-your-mouth wonderful. We shared the bread pudding dessert with ice cream and it, too, was yummy.

Service was mostly professional although our waiter was visibly miffed when we didn't order wine. We did try their mojitos and while they were tasty, there was a lot of ice in those too-small glasses.

All in all, a great experience and one which I'll repeat very soon.

MY REVIEW: My husband took me here as a surprise for our One Year Wedding Anniversary. He made reservations for 7:30pm and we were seated in a booth at the very corner of the restaurant. We had an excellent view. Very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent. Service was good. I highly recommend this place.

MY REVIEW: Love this place. The steak is superb, the ambience is fun but high-scale, great wine list, and the price is very fair, considering the quality of both food and service. One weak point: I wish the booths were a tad more private for romantic dinners; the noise makes that impossible: sometimes, conversation is difficult.

MY REVIEW: Our son requested Americas for his birthday celebration since he and his fiance have dined there several times. As first-timers, my husband and I enjoyed everything offered by this wonderful South American restaurant. Our 7:00 reservation provided us immediate seating in a quiet booth on the 2nd floor. The unique interior provided great visual interest, as well as sound insulation, despite the large Thursday night crowd. The four of us chose excellent pork (loved the lump crab meat topping) or beef dishes and were very pleased with the cerviche and salads (the Caesar has just the right hint of anchovy!). Desserts were in order since this was a birthday dinner and we loved them! Sampled each other's most delicious tres leches cake, bread pudding and excellent coconut ice cream... Be sure to try the raspberry iced tea. Although it's bottled, it has all the fresh crispness of homemade. Our special dining experience exceeded our expectations thanks to our waitperson, Pancho, who was personable and attentive.

MY REVIEW: I can sympathize with Patricia on her plight, so I think I may have found a solution for her. Patricia, if you can, go at lunch (or late lunch). That should solve your problems and you can still enjoy a place you really like.

I went Friday around 2 or 2:30 in the afternoon. There was almost no one else in the dining area. I was seated and attended to by a young waiter who was excellent (unfortunately I did not get his name). I often drink water with my meal and that is what I ordered. No problem at all. He did not even ask me if I wanted wine or anything and I look much older than 21. I thought about Patricia. My waiter was really outstanding and never once tried to "push" anything on me--I had to ask him for suggestions. My water glass stayed full and I drink alot of water. The plantain chips and salsa were brought out promptly and I munched on them as I tried to decide what to order, which took awhile because so many things looked good. I was allowed to take my time and never felt rushed throughout the entire meal. The plantains and salsa are excellent by the way.

For those of you who have never been, the decor is what I would call "funky art deco". It is unusual. It did not remind me of a "rainforest" but it was interesting to contemplate, nonetheless. The music was very enjoyable, sort of "salsa-y", very upbeat--good dining music (not too loud). The booth seating was very comfortable, also kind of "funky", but fun. The tables had the beautiful wood chairs and the tables were all elegantly set.

I finally ordered the Encamisado, which my waiter highly recommended after I asked him what some of his favorites were. It is a plantain crusted fried chicken breast served on a black bean and white sauce topped with squares of a most excellent tasting cheese. I asked my waiter, who checked with the chef and said it is called Panella cheese. The dish was absolutely delicious and came with a separate plate of broccoli, rice, julienned carrot strips and a couple of pieces of sweet potato (I think). It was a huge portion, especially being a lunch item. The lunch specials also all come with the house salad with the delicious creamy cilantro dressing. Prices for lunch are very reasonable (average range 8 - 15 dollars) and you get very generous portions. They also have the dinner menu available at lunch by request.

As full as I was, I just had to try the Tres Leches (I found several other desserts that looked very tempting as well). It was delicious, also a generous portion, and was the perfect compliment to a wonderful meal! The salad, huge entree with side dishes and dessert was around $17 without tip.

Patricia, I hope you can make it there at lunch very soon, munch on the plantains you enjoy and have a wonderful meal.

MY REVIEW: I was looking forward to going last night since I had not been in months-- and had a craving for the plantain chips! But, sorry to say, I am through with Americas. We stayed only for the appetizer-- by the time we decided to split and never come back we had already ordered it and saw it coming. If you don't drink wine and/or appear to be under 25 the waitpeople are very uninterested in you. Terrible service and attitude! Yes, people, it happened AGAIN!! (see my previous review a few revs. below!) There was no way I was going to sit through a meal again and spend over $100 for the service I recieve here.

MY REVIEW: I used to work just down the street from Americas and went there several times. I regret not workingt there now because I can't go as often. I love this place. The calamari is the best I've ever eaten and the plantain coated chicken with black beans is absolutely wonderful. The happy hour is excellent and always very lively with lots of beautiful women in the bar. The decor is reminiscent of a rain forest and is very cleverly done. Truly a unique atmosphere in the cookie cutter restaurant world. Give this one a try, you won't regret it.

MY REVIEW: I've been to Americas several times......not once was I disappointed by the food. Excellent! The beef tenderloins that come with the mushroom fries are incredible, especially with the white sauce that compliments the meat. I usually have the Empanaditas appetizer along with an appetizer that looks like quesadillas topped with shrimp- forgot name.

Desserts!!!!! Tres Leches and Bocadito del Cielo are to die for!

And now my complaint.......
On every occasion but the last we had excellent service. I doubt it was a coincidence that on every occasion but the last we had a 'younger' server. Our last server looked maybe 40 years old.....

Anyway, my boyfriend and I are young adults, though not wine drinkers. Never have been into the whole 'wine with the meal' sort of thing. Usually when the waitperson comes by they ask politely if we'll be having any wine, we reply no thanks, and that's that.

Well, when Mr. Middle-aged waitperson comes by and we deny the wine, he stares a minute at me and says in a condescending manner "Or, are you even old enough to drink?"

Now correct me if I am wrong, but if he thinks us not old enough to drink (which we are) shouldn't he wait until we ORDER A DRINK before questioning our age??? Also, he seemed as though since we were young that we weren't going to get anything expensive--he seemed taken aback when we ordered two appetizers and two pricey entrees plus dessert.

Overall, Americas has wonderful food, but I wish mgmnt. at restaraunts such as these would train waitpeople to serve without stereotypes.

MY REVIEW: A trendy joint populate by yuppies and pretty people. The bar is downstairs and the dining upstairs. A variety of entree prices let you escape for $30-$90 per person. Game, beef, fish with a latin flair. My mom had snapper which was excellent. I had a seafood/rice dish, also excellent. For an appitizer we had the calimari. The spicy mayo dip amde the appitizer, wow, that was good. The bread pudding for desert was very good. We passed on the coffee at $7 a cup, which is a outrageous.

MY REVIEW: Skip this restaurant and find something else. It's a rip-off. This was our first visit to Americas. We have repeatedly eaten at Churrascos and Amazon,(both operated by Mr. Cordua) both of which were usually excellent. Americas leaves MUCH to be desired.

We thought this was the flagship of the Cordua restaurant chain and it was an huge disappointment. We were seated at a table where the lighting was so poor that I wanted to ask for a flashlight just to read the menu. The waiter rushed us into a wine selection. We ordered empanaditas as an appetizer and they tasted exactly like what we received at Churrascos.

The waiter then rushed us into making an entree selection. The dinner items are quite a bit higher than Churrascos, but they're quite similar. The actual food was extremely bland and unworthy of further comment. I ordered what the waiter suggested as a "trio special", which consisted of pecan encrusted snapper, a tiny lobster tail, and the tenderloin beef. The snapper was "wet mushy", the lobster had no flavor, and the tenderloin, while tender, had no flavor or taste whatsoever.

The waiter, while occasionally appearing to refill the wine glasses, never once asked us our opinion of the food and he always appeared and gave the impression of being extremely rushed.

I recently read a review in Houston Magazine, Texas Monthly, or some other publication that trumpeted, "If there's one place in Houston you'd want to take someone, Americas is it". Sorry, but this place, on a scale of one to ten, barely merited a four. They rush you in, they rush you on menu selections, and then they rush you out. At the risk of being hypercritical, I asked my wife (the co-diner) what she thought. Her comment: "It no better than Churrascos, just much more expensive".

Overall impression: If you want to go into a fake tropical envionment, be raced into making menu selections by a frenzied waiter who must be snorting methamphetamine, and then settle for mediocre food at stratospheric prices, this is your place. If you want to eat at a real Latin American restaurant in Houston, eat at a churrasqueria like F*ogo de Chao.
