Profile Description: Our cozy cafe, named after a Slavic witch, has been a favorite in the Montrose area since 1975. This converted bungalow has several indoor & outdoor areas for semi-private dining. We recommend our beautiful Jasmine Room for private parties of 20 or more. The room has space for parties of up to 50 guests for seated dining, and up to 75 for standing cocktail receptions. Enjoy people watching out front under the shade of a century old oak tree, or dine on our veranda overlooking a lush garden compl
MY REVIEW: While everyone doesn't know my name, I have been to this wonderful place more times than I can count. The regular menu is tremendous, but the Sunday brunch is INCREDIBLE. If you can't find something on their menu to eat, then you probably just need to stay home. The eggs florentine and the vegetable frittata very flavorful, as was just about everything else there. I wasn't totally crazy about the mimosas; the champagne used for them seemed to be a bit 'off' when we were there.
I would advise you to get there early, as the place fills up quickly. The front patio and the garden seating are the nicest places to be (in the fall and spring when it's not 100 + degrees outside..LOL), but the interior setting is just fine also. My friends from work took me here to experience brunch before I move out of state (thanks Barbara and Marilou!!!); but I think I'll have to make it back one more time before I leave at the end of August. Great place! The burgers on the regular menu kick ass too!

MY REVIEW: Sandwich was great, ambiance was outstanding, gardens awesome. The only thing I would work on is splitting of the checks,,they wont do it. So, it was one check trying to split 5 ways, with credit cards and cash. Got a bit confusing. But, the experience overall was wonderful, will go back again,,,hopefully soon.

MY REVIEW: It's been a long time since I've been to Baba Yega's and after passing by a few weeks ago, decided to go back. It was a Tuesday night, and on Tuesday's they have the ceasar salad and pasta bar special. It was very good. I forgot how much I enjoyed the place. I won't wait so long before heading back again!

MY REVIEW: Have been to BY a few times before, never disappointed really..
Well I took my boyfriend there for a Sunday dinner. It will be a LONG LONG time before I take myself or anyone else there again. The service was horrible. The server who waited on us was on another planet. First it was 10 mintues to get our iced tea order in, then he forgot the order, then another 10 minutes to get the actual tea. Then they/he screwed up the drinks because I had a soda and my friend had an iced tea. I mean, stupid little things like that leave an impression on you. Then the table next to us, a party of three. They had put their drink orders in, and they were totally and completely forgotten, they got up to look for the server and never to be found. Then our server came back and tried to pull that stupid phony personal touch on us (touching the shoulder of my friend, asking us if there's anything he could do, etc...) The manager NEVER came over to any of us and asked us how things were, and as we finished and walked out, my friend told the manager that it was the worst service he'd ever had, and the manager seemed totally "don't care" attitude and just shrugged his shoulders.
Beware, just because it's in the gayborhood doesn't mean it's good. The parking SUCKS also. I would recommend if you and your date, friends want to go eat out, then try someplace else.

MY REVIEW: Baba Yaga's had caved to not providing service and "catering" to the new influx of aren't we so cool to have brunch in the gay slums. Fine no problem there are plenty of other places to eat. Encountered two Heathers in the parking lot who have been told too many times they are special. Another story.
Food still good, but the wait staff needs a refresher on why they appled for the job in the first place. I will take my business and greenbacks else where. Thanks for the many years of great friendly service of the past.

MY REVIEW: had not been to Baba Yega's in about a year. no special reason for not going, because it's been consistently good from the beginning. lunches are GREAT. the Fantasy is my fave. went recently with girlfriends for sunday brunch and was so surprised by the new brunch kitchen. it has EVERYTHING. and i can attest to the fact it was all good because i tried to sample all of it. great service. thank you ruben for helping make our birthday party a success. and thank you to the chefs, cooks, wait staff, etc., at Baba Yegas for all the really good food. as soon as i lose the pounds i gained sunday, i'll be back!

MY REVIEW: I went there with friends for Sunday brunch a couple weeks ago. We had the buffet which was packed with anything you could want from fresh fruits, pinapple, peaches, berries;including fresh whole strawberries, one platter of chocolate dipped, delectable. They had cereals and muffins, pancakes, waffles, but with a made to order omelette bar, I'll get my own cereal at home. There was a variety of desserts, brownies, cookies, cheesecake, flan. The atmosphere was laid back , a truly peaceful sunday morning with friends.

MY REVIEW: This is a place I would still bring friends from out of town. Classy and Comfortable without being pretentious.
I've been friends of Baba Yega (we call it ali baba) since around 1977 when I was running away from home to hang out in a Gay Village. You can ALWAYS rely on the "reuben", "club", "aux jus" and daily pizza special for sure. And the (ribeye maybe) steak will pleease you.
--The finest part is the atmosphere and the staff... Bohemian. I love me some Eli(he runs the bar), Roxy, and, you're lucky if you encounter Debbie((she used to run the bar)).
Do not miss walking out back through the aviary kind of dining room to sit outside and soak in all of the things that grow and surround you there and even smoke if you've a mind to...
p.s. and don't forget the complimentary fruit at the front door even if you're on your way in before you've bought anything. We support Baba Yega.

MY REVIEW: I have been eating there for 15 years and I still think that they have the best vegetarian food in Montrose. The veggie club with fruit is the best. I dont drink anymore but back in the day nobody made a strawberry daq. like Debbie...See you there sometime.

MY REVIEW: Quality has gone way down. Vegetarians are often willing to put up with a lot to get good food, but i can get mushy veggies and a bowl of spinach anywhere. If you insist on going, miss the lunch rush unless you have two hours to kill. And don't even try to get them to split a check...
rude, slow service. very average food. what happened???

MY REVIEW: This was my first time going and I went with my best friend Damien. I must tell you I was overwhelmed with JOY by the dining experience. We made sure we got the table # we were sitting near the Garden Windows
We had for starters the spinach and artichoke dip this was so tasty and the chips were tasty and crispy. Great compliment was the Hibicus Tea I must of had about 3 glasses of it it really complimented the great main course which was the rotissere chicken with mashed potatoes and a side salad and the fantasy sandwich which the avocados were perfectly fresh with the cottage fries.
Jason our server was the Best always friendly never overbearing and kept our tea glasses full at all times. We were able to take a stroll thru the Garden after our meal I must say the dining was the best I ever had. We will be back for my Birthday Bash!

MY REVIEW: Visited for lunch and thought it was great! Atmosphere is just perfect (when sitting by a window facing their beautiful courtyard). Food was good and fresh! I had the turkey and brie sandwich with fruit. The fruit was very good, especially with good, fresh fruit being seemingly hard to find lately.
My only suggestion is if you order this sandwich you may ask them to go light on the olive oil that's drizzled (or in my case I think more like poured) on top of the sandwich. Of course this is only a personal preference so you may love it the way it comes!
Definitely go to Baba Yega... I loved it!

MY REVIEW: A wonderful discovery indeed. anyone who likes to eat out should try this place at least once. Business or business casual, fine menu, good vegetarian choice, excellent ambiance, and reasonably priced. I've tried about 50% of the dishes on the menu and have never been disappointed. I believe it is owned/operated by a Czech family and certainly the quality shows distinction from the usual chain restaurant. Have been here many times with family, friends and business associates and plan to have this is one of my favorite spots in Houston.

MY REVIEW: First visit - on a Friday for lunch. Very nice setting, friendly and attentive waitstaff (without at all being overbearing). Good selection of items. Chicken and Sausage gumbo was very good and nice flavor. Little spicy, not the normal bland stuff you get.
I had the special pasta. Bowl of bow-tie pasta in a cilantro-lime cream sauce with skeweres of steak and blackened shrimp with slices of red pepper and onion. On top were a few pices of broccoli and slied tomato. All for $11.99. Oh, my. Yum. All of it. I asked the hostess about it, and they are experimenting with it. Last Friday they had the same thing in a different sauce. Only on Fridays.
Friend had the club sandwich and potato salad. Looked great.
All in all a wonderful experience. Will definitely be back again. Service was pleasant and fast. Reviews below are dated -- they appear to have gotten their stuff together. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

MY REVIEW: This review is for the new Baba Yega Express, located next door to the main restaurant.
Dropped in for lunch about 1:00 on a weekday afternoon last week. At this new "Express" location you order at the counter from a rather limited menu of sandwiches, salads and a couple of entrees. I put the word "express" in quotes because the service was anything but... our wait for our sandwiches was pretty long for a place that bills itself as a quick breakfast/lunch spot. The sandwiches themselves were very good - I had a smoked turkey sandwich with artichoke dip which was wonderful, and my friend had a roast beef au jus sandwich that he said was divine. Both were served with Baba Yega's famous potato salad.
I thought the menu was a little pricey for the portions served (the sandwiches aren't huge), but all the ingredients were obviously very fresh. I must comment on the atmosphere - the decor, drink station, jellies and jams in little ramekins, etc. are all VERY reminiscent of a certain casual French bistro chain. Nothing wrong with that, but we both made a point to comment about how similar the two restaurants were.
Overall, I enjoyed lunch here, but in the future will go back to the original Baba Yega restaurant. The atmosphere there is so unique and dining there is an experience that can't be matched in Houston.

MY REVIEW: Beautiful setting, nice waitstaff, the food though was nothing to write home about but not bad either. I had the Bacon burger which had a rather undersized patty (menu claims 1/2 lb but more likely 1/4 lb) that was quite overcooked (waitress didn't even ask how I wanted it done), one person had some grilled fish which was also dry and overcooked, and the third person had a portobello mushroom sandwich with a rather undersized portobello mushroom.
However the service was good (not great---very slow in refilling water glasses) and the atmosphere was stellar...I almost forgot I was in Houston! Felt more like Berekeley or someplace far more pleasant. And while they do not have any beer on tap they did have Samuel Smith Pale Ale in bottles which is very hard to find outside of a specialized beer place like The G*ingerman.
I'll probably come back and try other entrees, but mainly for the Sam Smith beer and the cool atmosphere.
The newly opened breakfast section next door is equally pretty, and slightly better food.

MY REVIEW: Certainly not what it used to be. Food was good, waiter was worthless, even when he bothered to check on our party of 12. No refills of water or removing plates off tables. Baba Yeaga's refuses to write separate checks, therefore, we had to pull out of pen and paper and figure it out ourselves. Waiter did remind us that we had to leave a tip of 15%. We thought it kind of him to remind us while we were trying to figure out our separate tickets. I guess he knows he doesn't need to work for a tip for a party of 12 since it is a restaurant rule. During the thunderstorm, rain was coming through the tarp overhead and dripping on us. We moved the tables ourselves to try to get out of the rain. We now refer to Baba Yega's as a Montrose joke. We are going to Montrose D*iner where they know how to treat peoople!

MY REVIEW: What can you say about such an icon in the montrose. The bartender seems to hold a grudge and will decide for you when you've had enough. 4 men, 2 hours, 3 drinks and we were shut off. Maybe she/he should attend the tabc class again. Too bad they can afford to lose business our money is better spent elsewhere.

MY REVIEW: The Sunday brunch at this place is inexpensive, delicious, and full of choices. I loved the fact they have so many fresh fruits like slices of mangoes, pineapples, orange slices, watermelons, strawberries and papaya! The egg omlette station was quick and you can pick your own fillings. One weak point about this place, it's too hot. It seems like they don't like turning on their A/C and the brunch area feels like a sauna. OTher than the heat though, i highly recommend their brunch.

MY REVIEW: Mother's day was my first time eating here for brunch, the wait was long as expected but well worth it! The food, atmosphere and service all are worth it. I will keep going back to Baba Yega's. This restaurant is exceptional. Our server was especially nice and was great with my children. I recommend this place to everyone!!!!!!!!!!
