MY REVIEW: I had eaten there years ago when I worked in area and today was in area on business and had lunch there. I saw they had Chicken-Fried Steak and could not resist. Trying to find best CFS in Houston. It was terrific.
Large steak well-pounded with thin flour breading, West Texas style. Came with white gravy and had onion rings on side and salad. Steak was almost too big for lunch. Salad with balsamic dressing was perfect as were onion rings. Obviously everything was made from scratch. My only complain is the meal was only warm when it got to me. They needed to get to table faster or use a heated plate. There were not that many customers.
I would put CFS in top tier of places in Houston.

MY REVIEW: I always enjoy the Cattleguard! I used to work at an oil company across the freeway, and had many business lunches there. Since leaving the company, I have continued to give this business my business! Lighten up and have a well-prepared and unpretentious meal! I'll be there tonight (Valentine's day) with my hubby of 20 years...

MY REVIEW: I have been a fan of the cattleguard since 1993, and visit it every time i am in Houston. The menu is diverse and prices reasonable, they don't give there steaks away but who does in this inflated beef market. I have always had a warm reception from the staff, and wonderful service. This place is my rural oasis in busy west Houston. I am also a fan of the non cookie cutter corporate feel of other steak houses. Keep up the good work for another 13 years.

MY REVIEW: I've been to the Cattleguard multiple times and its one of my favorite restaurants in West Houston. I imagine the previous reviewer who did not like the Cattleguard live inside the Loop or in one of the suburbs. As previously mentioned, the Cattleguard is not on the same caliber as a five star gourmet steakhouse. You can't compare the Mona Lisa to a Norman Rockwell painting. Both are good on their own merit and what they're trying to accomplish. The Cattleguard is a place to get a good steak in a casual atmosphere. I have ordered a number of the steaks and they were all very good. The waitstaff have always been attentive and I have never had a problem. Prices can be a bit expensive, but this is mainly limited to the steaks. I can understand that due to the restaurant's dependence on the price of beef.
Overall, I think the Cattleguard is a good steakhouse with a casual and rural feel to it that a lot of "sophisticated" restaurant patrons may not appreciate. But if you're like me and you like a place to have a good steak and a good conversation then I think you'll enjoy the Cattleguard.

MY REVIEW: One visit is enough!!! Wanting a good steak, my friend and I visited Cattleguard on Highway 6. After looking at the menu, we asked our waitress her recommendation as to their best steak. The waitress recommended the filet priced at $25.99. When our steaks arrived we were dismayed at their small size and thickness; they were not thicker than 1/2 inch. The "manager on duty" came to our table to ask how are steaks were and we responded, in a very nice way, that we were disappointed with the size and thickness. He said "I am sorry but that is how our steaks are" and walked away. Very disappointing dinner; cannot recommend Cattleguard to anyone wanting a good steak.

MY REVIEW: There must be some really cranky people out there. We've been going to Cattleguard for the past 16 years and it has been nothing but great. It's not a classy steak house like P*appas Bros., but it doesn't pretend to be. Their fried shrimp are great as are the onion rings. Salads are basic but cold and good. You can get fresh ground pepper on your salad (or anything else) if you like.
Both the tuna and the salmon dinners are good values. It's one of the only restaurants we've found that has ostrich. You can either get fajitas with such or a burger. The wait staff has always been friendly to us. Maybe the last bad reviewer has a chip on his shoulder. Cattleguard won't miss him, it always busy. That should tell you all you need to know.

MY REVIEW: I am utterly amazed. By two things. Seeing all the good reviews of this place is the second. The first was how utterly horrible our dining experience was.
I'm in a good mood right now, having had a couple of days to get the bad taste out of my mouth, and having just come from dinner at a truly great restaurant. So, if this seems scurrilous, it's because everything was just that bad at Cattleguard.
Let's start with the bad taste I had in my mouth for a couple of hours after we left. You'd think that fried potatoes wouldn't be too difficult to get right. What I got were about as dark as the steak beside them, and tasted burned. I'm no epicure, but I know what I like. And what they served ain't it.
In a sense, it's gratifying to find all the surprisingly good reviews of the place, because this restaurant was highly recommended by a friend I respect. Everybody has a bad day now and then, and maybe we showed up at the wrong time. When we got married, my wife was an inexperienced cook. I promised to try anything she wanted to fix -- twice, in case she messed up the first time. She has become a gourmet cook, and the only thing (which I always hated anyway) she'll never get another shot at is liver.
There are too many world class restaurants in Houston, with great food and dedicated, attentive, and courteous wait staffs (The kind of food and wait staff other people seem to have found at Cattleguard.) to even think about subjecting myself to the waitress's rudeness or those terrible tasting fried potatoes ever again.
My first impression of the place was that it should have buckets of peanuts on the tables, and shells scattered on the floor. When I realized it lacked both of those things, it all seemed sort of frumpy and mundane. At times, the ceiling got too loud, but most of the time the volume was reasonable.
I thought it was a great touch, that a carafe of water appeared with our drinks. That was about the only thing which was not mediocre or worse.
I got caught unprepared by the arrival of the waitress to take our orders. As I hurriedly made up my mind what I wanted, I was telling the waitress why I didn't have my order on the tip of my tongue when she arrived. In mid sentence, she snippily said she'd give me another minute (Which I didn't need!) and hastily departed. If she had about 15 seconds' worth of patience, I'd have given her the order. So, we waited a while, and she eventually came back. Asked if I had decided. I told her I had decided before she left last time. You'd think she'd get a clue maybe she needed to slow down and pay attention. She didn't.
As I was ordering, she interrupted again. Demanded to know how I wanted my steak. I pointed out that this, like the earlier interruption, was rude, and continued my sentence, specifying what I wanted with my steak, and how I wanted my potatoes done. At the end, I stated, "I don't care how you fix my steak." I said so, recognizing I'm pretty much obligated to eat whatever might show up, and willing to deal with it.
Nevertheless, Amy repeated the question: "How do you want your steak done?" I reminded her I had already answered the question. She left. Sent someone else to the table. More irritating hassle, and concomitant refusal to accept my noncommittal answer.
Our salads arrived, and a bite or two into them, my wife suggested doing something we have never done in 36 years: "Shall we just get up and leave?" She could tell I was not pleased with how things had gone so far. We finished the lackluster salads. The stone cold bread was but a minor irritation, compared to the waitress's haste in what didn't seem like a very crowded place.
While we were waiting for our meals, there were two different efforts to bring us things we didn't order. First, someone presented two meals completely dissimilar to our orders. Eventually, we noticed those meals were taken to another table. Those people weren't thrilled, either. Didn't seem as upset as I was, but weren't willing to accept a meal which they knew had been on our table. Almost immediately, someone arrived and whisked the meals away, telling the other couple the replacements would be comped.
Hearing that was kinda like adding injury to the insults from our waitress. We didn't even get an apology.
The waitress never did anything to redeem herself, so when the check came, I did something I cannot recall doing ever -- not one time -- in my adult life, with the possible exception of some forgotten situation where I was so close to broke that simply paying the bill was a burden. (And, that wouldn't have been in an overpriced place like Cattleguard!) Except for a factor like that, where I couldn't afford to, I have never -- ever -- failed to leave a waitress a tip. I did not lightly consider nor carelessly decide that Sunday's waitress was to get nothing.
Finally, our food arrived. No salt or pepper on the table. No brown gravy, which I had ordered for my fries, anywhere in sight. Just the brownest fries I could ever imagine, next to my steak. After struggling with a few of them, I asked my wife her opinion. She took a bite. Not only did she not like them, on the way home, she said, "I could not have eaten more than one bite of those fries. They were awful." I characterized them as possibly the worst things that had ever been put in front of me at a restaurant, in my life.
Finally, to put into perspective the probably mediocre steak so grossly overshadowed by the fries, I had a similar, though smaller, steak Friday night for supper. Like Cattleguard, it was a place we had never visited before. Unlike Cattleguard, I anticipate going back to the other place. Friday night, I had characterized the steak (Which cost about half as much as Cattleguard's.) as possibly the best piece of meat I have ever eaten in my life. So Sunday's steak had a tough act to follow, and a horrible side to overcome. It failed on both counts, but in a different context might have been okay. Not great; just okay.
My wife is probably the most tolerant creature on the face of the earth. She asked, as we were waiting for the right order to arrive, "Could they have done anything else more wrong?" It wasn't just my opinion of the fries or the waitress. If anything, her opinion of them was less lenient than mine.
Her meal, fortunately, was tolerable. She had a rack of ribs. I ate one of the ribs, and it was about as ho-hum as anything I've ever had. Not bad, just not as good as the price tag might lead one to expect. She had beans as a side, and I tasted those, as well. Again, bland and uninspired. Filling food, but nothing worth going back for.
All negative factors aside, the food at this place is definitely not a good value for the dollar.
I cannot recall a wait staff, in 25 years of Houston restaurants, so rude or inept as Cattleguard's. Overall, our experience there was possibly the worst we ever had, anywhere.
Well, that's it. Now, I'm gonna write three rave reviews of other restaurants.

MY REVIEW: My wife's grilled shrimp and veggie kabob and my new york strip were cooked to perfection, and the service was even better. Seemed like all the waitstaff checked every table, not just their own. They honor entertanment. com's card, use it once for up to 18 dollars off your bill, and 20 % everytime after that. The only improvement i'd make would be to ask customers if they need their tea topped off instead of just pouring it. Did I mention they leave a carafe of tea and if you order coffee, another container to top it off, at your table, nice touch. I really hate waiting for tea refills, you won't have to put up with that here!

MY REVIEW: We had a very attentive waiter. He left a carafe of water on the table and didn't blink at the small special requests we made. The food was good. Fried catfish portions were generous and they didn't load the plate down with a half pound of fries.
The gumbo was served with rice and scallions on the side but, either it did not contain okra or it was so overcooked the okra had turned to mush. I didn't really appreciate the crab claws in the soup. It was messy and left little bits of crab shell in the soup.
The prices we're a little high and the ambience was a little rough. I guess I'll have to leave Houston if I want to eat dinner without a TV blairing in the background.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I are frequent visitors to the Cattleguard because the service and food are beyond compare. I have rarely frequented and restaurant as regularly are we do the Cattleguard. The food is always good. I've never had anything that wasn't excellent. The wait staff is very attentive. Cindy and Jacinto in the bar are wonderful. Everyone is very friendly and we are always greeted by Vaheed and Patrick. Everyone we've ever taken there likes it. Always a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

MY REVIEW: Took my husband for his birthday. The regular dining room was going to be fully occupied beginning at 7pm, but we were offered a table in the banquet room. Not the most romantic, but all else made up for it.
Service: great, attentive, and the waiter noticed that I called my husband "birthday boy". Without me asking, he put a candle in Hubby's apple pie, and removed the charge for the pie from the bill.
Food: I enjoyed my prime rib, which was cooked perfectly, but it was seriously outdone by Hubby's grilled salmon and shrimp over mashed potatoes. WOW!! The salmon was moist, tasty. The shrimp very good. He normally won't stuff himself, but the food was too good to pack up and re-heat later, so he was hurtin' on the way home.
We used the coupon from the Passbook, so that coupled with the free dessert turned a reasonable cost into a VERY reasonable cost. (1/2 the cost was the $30 bottle of wine.)
I'd definitely go back. Waiter also told us the Passbook card was good for 20% off for all return visits.

MY REVIEW: This is a nice, casual restaurant with really good food. We visited on a Friday night and there were quite a few people at the bar, so it was a bit noisier than I expected. Service was very good; all of the staff were attentive and polite. Only one small criticism of the service: our hostess asked for a drink order as she was seating us. Chances are pretty good that I won't know exactly what I want to drink when I haven't looked at the menu yet, guys.
The menu has a good selection of food and drink with a nice range of prices. This is easily a restaurant you can take the kids to or go to any day of the week. It's a nice place, but it's not fancy nice. I'd celebrate a birthday there, but not an anniversary. There's a lot of wood in the decor; the walls have posters from old Westerns. As a previous reviewer commented, it was rather chilly inside, though not uncomfortably so after I'd had a chance to adjust.
My husband had the buffalo rib-eye and definitely recommends it. It was juicy, tender, and cooked perfectly. His baked potato was huge and came with all the toppings in a small bowl on the side. I had the ribs and shrimp, which was also good. Barbecue sauce on the ribs was unevenly applied -- there was practically none on one end and it was glopped all over on the other end -- but the ribs were some of the best I've had otherwise. Shrimp were grilled and seasoned nicely. I had the Spanish rice with as a side; this was the only part of the meal that I was disappointed with, as the rice was rather dry and had less flavor than I expected.
Dessert was creme brulee. VERY good. We shared it, expecting a larger serving. The serving size was adequate, especially given the size of our dinner entrees; it's more a statement about serving sizes at restaurants in Texas in general.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I are from Lenoir, NC. We visited Houston for the Superbowl in 2004. We stayed at the Holiday Inn beside of the Cattleguard. We ate at the Cattleguard 2 times while we were there. There were many other restaurants to pick from but everything we ate at the Cattleguard was so awesome we hated to try something different. Their chicken alfredo is the best I ever had. My husband eat buffalo for the first time and loved it. The waiter and waitress we had were outstanding. They kept our glasses full and were super nice. We have told everyone that we know that if they visit Houston, Tx, they will have to eat at the Cattleguard.

MY REVIEW: THE REAL TRUTH
STRONG POINTS: The food is awesome know matter what you order. I can't say enough good things about each thing on the menu, and yes I have had everything at least twice. I have been eating there for years. Another strong point is the friendliness of the staff. They know their guest and the guest get to know each other. It really is like the show Cheers. This makes the atmosphere comfortable while getting one of the best meals in Houston.
WEAK POINTS: None.
SPECIALTIES: Can you put the entire menu on this list??
ENTREES: You have to try the Steak Diane. It's to die for.
DESSERT: Creme Broule is another to die for.
TO VAHID AND THE REST OF THE CATTLEGUARD STAFF.. THANKS FOR KEEPING ME PART OF THE FAMILY. I'll see ya next time.

MY REVIEW: Honestly, I have waited tables here for years and regularly return for great food. Vahid takes the utmost pride in his food and choice of staff. If you want a relaxed atmosphere with good food and a smiling face, come to the cattlegaurd. If not, see you at TXLC where the service has sucked everytime, and the food mediocare at best.

MY REVIEW: I have eaten here several times. The food is good, but their babyback ribs are the best I've had in Houston! Their waitstaff have always been friendly and helpful. I will admit the lunchtime staff are not as impressive as the evening staff. I've been to more well-known steak places that are not as good as this. Cattleguard is a well-kept secret.

MY REVIEW: Not a good experience at all. Oh where to start;
*The wait staff. Rude on several occasions, the first time we encountered him (delivering our drinks) someone at our table asked a question about a certain dish. He just stood there for about 5 seconds holding our drinks looking at him, and then blurted out "Why don't you all just WAIT a min and let me put this down". I'm sure he would have lost his rhythm if he were chewing gum. We should have left because it only got worse from there. He hurried through the ordering process to a point that he forgot several items; an order of hot wings, cheese on the salads, was told not to bring rice on the shrimp skewer dish but did and forgot the scallops which were to be added to the shrimp skewer dish that he said was no problem to add. Had to be told 3 times to bring more bread and finally did along with a “To Go Box” because we were already finished with the meal. I guess it was a good thing he didn’t bring the bread sooner because it would have made us thirsty when he never returned to offer refills on the drinks. And it wasn’t like he was extremely busy because there were only 3 other tables occupied at the time. Maybe they don’t have desert, because we were not offered any.
Another server stood next to us the whole time with a rag smearing old food off of something; Dishes- menus- kids chairs, I don’t know because I couldn’t see it. You would think that they would have an actual station in the rear of the restaurant for this task instead of using the table next to the hostess station, ensuring that anyone within food slinging distance would take OFFENSE. I am such a person that takes offense to someone perform housekeeping near me in a restaurant while I am eating. It is one thing to spill a drink and have to get it up, or have to bus a table, but to place (potential return customers) in an area that is to be used for housekeeping when another area sits entirely empty is only testament as to why half of the restaurant was vacant. My overall feeling from the waitstaff was one of inconvienence. Why are you people bothering me, Cant you see I'm busy.
*The food. With a little catsup, you could have easily convinced me that my prime rib was actually pot roast; it was that dry and flavorless! French fries were ok, they tasted like the kind you get with a Jumbojack. My wife (who was raised by the ocean) said the shrimp was fresh, but the batter used to deep-fry them was seriously abrasive to the point of scraping the inside of her mouth like 10 grit sand paper.
And all this could be yours for the small fee of around $25.00 per person.
Now I know why I have never heard anyone mention this place other than to say I wonder what is like. Well, let me bend your ear.

MY REVIEW: Have been visiting this restaurant since the mid-90's. The owner, Fahid, is a most interesting gentleman and the staff are as well. The food is good and they have buffalo and osterich as well.
