MY REVIEW: For those who have not enjoyed this restaurant...You are missing out! This is the best and especially for the money. Here's the regimen when you go.....cup of gumbo, dozen raw oysters, Texas mini and Corona Michelada con ostion. They are always consistent and we always leave very satisfied. I highly recommend this place.

MY REVIEW: Best oysters in town. Seafood is always fresh. We like the casual atmosphere and good food. We've never been disappointed with anything we've ordered there.

MY REVIEW: Just moved to Houston from Cincinnati and any time I drove by Captain Tom's place it was packed. A little search on the internet brought me to this site and that same day we made our first (but not last) visit. Raw Oysters at 4.95 are the stand out here. You give your order at the register for carry out but there are waiters for the bar/tables. When you are done leave a tip and tell the man at the register what you had and pay. Cheap and easy.

Captain Tom's is definatiely a dive and we will be back.

MY REVIEW: Well I enjoyed eating at Captain Tom's Seafood on the Katy Freeway...WHEN they had the whole fried Flounder..that was now months ago. I have called weekly or twice weekly and they never have it. The explanation that I got was that they pay $5.00 a piece for the flounder ( a bargain) and sell it for $9.99 and therefore they cannot make money on it. DUH...I don't blame them! But why not raise the price to $14.95 ...I would pay it and I am sure many others would. I won't be back until they have the flounder as I personally don't eat seafood or catfish. I am not disparaging the place or the people that do..everyone raves about it. I would just like to see the Flounder back on the menu.

MY REVIEW: My fiancee and I stop by at least once a month, usually at an off time to get seats! The fresh oysters are amazing and he loves their Micheladas. I think the gumbo is very fresh and I usually order the fried oysters and sprinkle some lemon on top. The crab fingers are great and he always orders the seafood platter. Try it out, but don't tell too many friends!!!

MY REVIEW: Where else can you get fresh Gulf Oysters on the half-shell for $4.95. Incredible. The catfish is the absolute best. The girls cooking it up behind the counter know what they're doing. And you know the neat thing about this place...you don't get a bill! Oh of course you gotta pay but there's no waiting for the check. Because they don't give you one. Ha! That's right, you just walk up to the register and tell them what you had. How cool is that? I attempted to cheat once and said all my wife and I had was 'water'. The cashier replied 'that'll be $34.95'. So it was cheaper to just tell the truth about what we ordered (The usual: 1doz. Oysters, 2ea. Texas Mini's, Beer & Micheladas or 3). Which it seems that's what everyone else does too. Customers say exactly what they had and they're charged accordingly. The prices are very reasonable and don't forget to leave a nice tip to the guys serving you from inside the boat. On second thought, don't go. It's hard enough to get a sit as it is.

MY REVIEW: Excellent! What a great meal: cup of gumbo, fresh shucked oysters, and a whole fried catfish, washed down by their house-special drink of hot sauce, fresh lime juice, salt and beer.

The place is small and has always been packed when I was there, but it just adds to the unique excperience. Most of the seating is at the bar and we've always had a small wait to get seats. It would be tough to sit together if you go with a group. Service is great once you're seated. It is a very casual "joint", but blue collar workers dine happily next to businessmen in suits.

I would highly recommend it.

MY REVIEW: I wish I could say what Captain Tom's fish, shrimp, crawfish, or anything else tasted like, but I can't because for the past 20 years, I've been seduced by their sweet, fresh, perfectly cooked (or freshly half-shelled) oysters. My son was only 3 when he ate his first raw oyster there (he's 23 now and was an incredibly picky eater) and one taste of the Captain's oysters made him an omniverous gormand!

I also like the way they count, as a "dozen" fried oysters is usually 20-24 (small ones, but those are the best anyway) and their "dozen" on the half shell can be 13-15 (depending on how many they can fit on the plate.) Add your own horseradish to the sauce-- heaven!

Two people can eat a dozen on the half shell, a dozen fried each, gumbo and tea for $20. Yeah, you'll sit too close to strangers, fall off the stool sideways, hear a LOT of Spanish, and have to be aggressive to get a seat, order, and get out, but it's M*cDonald's cheap for oyster nirvana!

But y'all won't like it! Don't go! Leave room for us! Stay away!

MY REVIEW: well, I've been wanting to check this place out since it opened and finally made the trip when I was craving fried shrimp yesterday. I didn't really expect the counter top/oyster bar seating and casual vibe. I was expecting a formal dining room with waiters and all, but I liked the vibe and the open kitchen. It was a little weird that we were the only anglos and every one in the place was speaking Spanish to each other (this made my wife a little uncomfortable, but I am a bi-lingual white boy so it seemed totally natural to me).

I really liked the place itself but I was not impressed by the food. The gumbo had nice chunks of crabmeat but no seasoning. The shrimp were smashed flat butterfly style and the breading had no flavor. the crushed shrimp did not have much shrimp flavor either. they were kind of rubbery too. the catfish was mushy and bland also. This would probably be a great place to pig out on the cheap if you and your buddies were gonna sit and have beers, oysters, and shrimp on the way to the ballgame, but it's not someplace you go for great seafood. it's just mediocre and inexpensive

MY REVIEW: no im not exactly a regular at captain tom's, but their food is no stranger to me, ive been eating it for years bieng a native houstonian. the food at "the boat" is the best, freshest seafood here in the state. a bold statement? perhaps, but for anyone who has eaten there will be inclined to agree with me. everything is made in front of you, and the service is uncanny. just name something and in a flash is right in front of you. though all of their seafood is excellent, their gumbo is what hooks people (no pun intended). i was eating thier seafood gumbo 15+ years before i was able to eat anyone elses! the restraunt itself is a little bit tricky, unconventional is a good word to describe it. instead of bieng seated you seat yourself, and when it comes time to pay you head over to the cashier and explain to him what you have eaten. nice people, all of them.

MY REVIEW: Ive been going here since i was small. The seafood platter is perfect for me and my boyfriend Jason to share, while having a bowl of gumbo as an appetizer. Every time we go, its busy, but we don't mind the wait for the delicious food. Oysters are great,i dont know what the heck that red sauce is but its AWESOME!! it gives it a unique taste and the oysters are fresh and doesn't taste like the ocean.

MY REVIEW: My niece took me here for lunch. Was visiting from Atlanta. I did not want to leave. Oysters were the freshest, shucked in front of your eyes, the gumbo was piping hot-had more seafood in it than rice it was the best I've tasted;the fried catfish, and I come from Atlanta, was so fresh and fried right it didn't have any taste- meaning it was a bomb!! The beer was popped in one second and in my hands as soon as I said "beer", bottled and cold -$1.85. Dozen oysters $3.85, one whole fried catfish $4.85- need I say more. Unfortunate I had to be in College Station rest of the week I was not able to come back. Next time for sure-straight from the airport!!

MY REVIEW: We are from San Antonio and we are addicted to Capt. Tom's. The gumbo, oysters, catfish, michiladas and service is great. The prices are the lowest anywhere. We have even driven a couple of times on weekends to Houston just to eat and drive back to S.A., kid you not! We visit Houston two or three times each summer and have at least two meals a day there.

MY REVIEW: Fresh, cheap, fantastic! The oysters , both raw and fried are the freshest and best I ever had. I usually don't buy fried shrimp at a restaurant, but these are butterflied and cooked perfectly. The michelata, not on the menu, is your choice of beer poured into a cold, salted mug that has some secret tabasco/lime sauce. Love it! It's crazy busy for dinner..noisy, crowded, and there's a wait, but if you go early, you can find a seat. It's like a New York kind of place - great people watching!

MY REVIEW: good food, decent price, but had a horrible experience, granted it was on a Friday during lent, but the crowd was not my problem. if you're not a regular, it's very chaotic. there is not clear signage as to how it all works there. one thing led to another to where i just wanted to run out screaming. 1) the parking was limited, which is the norm, so far no prob. 2) the line is out the door - so i'm pregnant, i can still stand, it's really okay. 3) next, after waiting what seemed like an eternity to place my order, a woman, whom i clearly saw walk in after me, cuts in in front of me and begins to place her order & argue with me and the cashier doesn't say a word, he just helps her. 4) i had no choice but to wait there fuming and then the cashier asks, "here, or to go?" we say "here" & he says, you need to place your order with the waiter! we'll if i had known that i could have seated myself, i wouldn't have waited 10 min's in line, so i said, "TO GO" - i couldn't wait to leave! Last, 5) it was another 20 min's before our food was ready, people came & went who had ordered after us. they have no # system, it's just random as they use their sticky notes!!!

if the food & pricing wasn't as good as it is, i'd NEVER return!!!

MY REVIEW: Absurdly cheap oysters - $3.95 a dozen - and they're plump and tasty too. My wife is an oyster lover and she was very impressed. For the price, best we've had anywhere, period. I heard that they have their own oyster beds which makes them safer, better and cheaper. The rest of the menu is cheap too, and everything we tried was good. Great seafood, if you like fried seafood. The stuffed crab was surprisingly excellent. Drinks are quite cheap. Only problem is that it is very busy, and shack like. No tables, just the bar, and no organization to seating people. Busy times there is a wait out the door. I would suggest going before 5pm for dinner.

MY REVIEW: This was my first visit to a boat restaurant, and I will definitely be back!

I must admit my surprise that there were no tables, per se, just two U-shaped bars with stools, so you could watch the staff in the middle or look out the window. We were greeted and had our drinks in under 10 minutes. The food came out very quickly and was just what we were in the mood for.

My catfish was perfectly fried in cornmeal with fries on the side for just under $5. IBC Root beer was less than a dollar a bottle, and tea was 60 cents.

My husband got the seafood platter, which included two pieces of catfish, a large stuffed crab, fried shrimp and oysters. We ordered a side of hush puppies, and there were eight perfectly seasoned, hot, crispy balls of corn fried goodness. The only thing we did not like was the michelata. Many others were drinking it that night, but we decided to stick to Dos Equis Green. We got two for the price of one at any other place.

If you are looking for a place to get some great fried seafood with a very casual atmosphere, stop by the boat.
