MY REVIEW: I've been a Warren's regular for about three years now, and although I am a bit surprised to stumble upon it on a dining review site, I feel it necessary to say my piece.
Firstly, Warren's Inn is a bar. One of the iconic bars of Houston. To go to Warren's is to experience the acme of urban Texan nightlife. No, we're not talking about what the silicone and Prada set over on Main St. think about urban nightlife. This is a bar. This is a bar with the best drinks in Houston. This is a bar with a vocal jazz and electric blues heavy jukebox that still manages to include Morrissey and Bob Wills. This is a bar that has been going strong for 25 years, and for good reasons.
The regulars range from white-belted hipsters and South Asian medical students to grizzled veterans and aged hippie mystics. Taking care of them are some of the finest service professionals I've ever encountered. Amada, Katy, and April provide service that is friendly--if delivered with an invariably sharp wit and take-no-guff attitude--and, considering how busy things can become on weekend nights, very efficient.
The decor is Golden Age Oil Baron--dark wood paneling, huge heavy mirrors alternating with pseudo classical bas reliefs. Fake Tiffany lampshades The vintage Clydesdale team Budweiser clock over the bar would probably fetch a grand on ebay. The cigarette machine sell Trues. A gazebo shaped snug is elevated on one wall, an excellent vantage for the voyeuristic imbiber in all of us.
Oh yeah, and they actually do serve food. Notable mostly for being one of the few places to grab a late night bite that serves all week, Warren's keeps a fridge full of tasty white bread sandwiches (turkey and cheese, egg salad, chicken salad, or tuna salad). Excellent for when that whiskey needs a cushion.
