MY REVIEW: Hungry at lunch for a little brown rice and cooked veggies, I headed today for Cafe Express, knowing with their varried menu, the choice would definitely be offered. Wrong. Cafe Express sells no rice. Cafe Express serves no cooked vegetable plate.

If you want to eat a healthy vegetarian lunch at Cafe Express, and you prefer a glutten free (wheat free) selection, you are out of luck. Cafe Express' idea of a veggetarian meal is a "Veggie Burger." Both the burger and the bun contain wheat glutten.

A hip place like Cafe Express should get hip to vegetables and rice.

MY REVIEW: Strong points
Normally has Great food, reasonable prices, friendly faces behind the counters.

Conveniently located across town.

I have eaten at this location many times, and if there was a comment to make, the salads are sometimes lacking of flavor in the dressings. The Chicken Caesar salad has been removed from my personal list due to oily, lack luster dressing, and limp flavorless chicken.

However, the rest of the Cafe Express menu is wonderful.

MY REVIEW: The last few times I've been to the Cafe Express on West Gray, I experienced the "Creep Factor". This Cafe Express doesn't seem to be quite as clean, fresh and confident as it used to be. After having stayed away for a month or two, I decided to give it another chance on Tuesday after work. On this occasion my salad was okay but with the unswept floors, the very few workers or patrons, and the prior experience I'd had with wilted old lettuce, I still could not shake that creepy feeling.

What is going on with this place? Where did everyone go? It was practically empty at 6:30 on a Tuesday and a year or so ago it would be packed every night at that time.

I hope they can rally and make a come back. I used to really like eating there.

MY REVIEW: I eat here at least 4 times a month and the food is always excellent. I usually order a salad, and it is always fresh. I think the food is a BARGAIN, I mean people, M*cDonalds will cost you 6 bucks! For a couple of extra dollars you can get fresh food that is also healthy.

MY REVIEW: Cafe Express is way over-priced for what you get. I ordered grilled chicken with a side of steamed broccoli, and while the broccoli was decent (though pretty flavor-less), the chicken was very dry. The portions were very small, as well. I went with a group of coworkers, and the ones who ordered salads were pleased with their portions-size, but everyone said it was too expensive for a run-of-the-mill salad one can get anywhere. Nothing special and too expensive.

MY REVIEW: I have been to different locations and had different things. The food is over priced. A friend had a grilled chicken dinner that consisted of grilled chicken with pesto on it with a side of spinach and tea. It cost around $11., but was worth $5.99. I have eaten salads there and they were good, but I have gotten better salads and cheaper elsewhere. If you like going to the "IN" places, you will like it. Service has always been good.

MY REVIEW: I went to the West Gray location on a Saturday evening. The place was practically empty. I ordered a beer with my sandwich but the clerk at the counter forgot to give it to me when I paid the check. When my order was ready I went to the front and my food was on the tray on the counter but there was nobody in sight. I saw the beers in a tub full of ice so I reached over and picked one up. About that time a manager appeared and I asked him if I could use the bottle-opener. He said "where did you get that beer?" I replied that I had ordered one with my meal and that I had helped myself because nobody was at the counter when my order was ready. He snapped "that's illegal" and then he questioned whether I had paid for the beer. (By the way I am almost 50 years old and I don't look like the type who would nick a bottle of beer.) I assured him that I had paid for the beer and produced my receipt which confirmed that. He just glared at me and never said he was sorry for accusing me of theft. I was so offended! The clerk at the front had erred by not giving me the beer when I paid for my order and then by disappearing. The the manager accuses me of stealing a beer because I had to help myself? The food was ok (not really a great value) but I will NEVER go there again and I repeat this story to anyone who will listen to it. The story never fails to appall potential patrons.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I came in for lunch on Sunday. The place was pretty empty, yet they seemed to be falling behind. First off our bill came out to $29. We had a $25 gift card and asked to put the remainder on our card. For some reason they couldnt figure out how to put $25 on the card and put $21. Ok...

Next we ordered a "Mushroom Spinach Turkey burger" and the "Angus Chedder burger." The lady asks my husband (who ordered the angus) if he wanted turkey or beef. And if he wanted swiss cheese. He looked at her and goes, "well that would defeat the purpose of an angus chedder burger wouldnt it?" When our food came out, it was cold and they reversed the burgers making mine with beef and his with turkey. We had to take it back and the mananger rolled his eyes and said he would fix it. Already had waited nearly 20 mins, we had to wait another 15 and they still didnt get it right. My burger came out with the cheese not melted, the mushrooms on the side and no spinach. I was so annoyed that I had lost my appetite. And on top of that my husbands burger came out with the smallest piece of cheese on it and it the patty was burnt.

We had always heard good things about this place, but were very disappointed. We will not return back.

MY REVIEW: It's a shame that this location isn't up to par with the location at River Oaks. My family and I came in for a "quick bite" around 4:30 PM on a Saturday. The place was FILTHY. Tables were still covered in old plates. Trash was on the floor. The ladies restroom had paper all over the location--and was out of soap (so much for employees washing their hands). It'll be a long time, if ever, that I frequent this location.

MY REVIEW: My wife and I dine here to-go, since we live close by. The Rustica sandwich is consistently good. The burgers are also usually good. Many other dishes are hit or miss. The c-chip cookies can be utterly fantastic one night, and obviously mis-mixed the next time. It's a little expensive for what you get, as well.

We mainly eat there because it's easy, and has passable food. The cookies can make it special, when they're good.

MY REVIEW: Although I have dined at Cafe Express's various locations many times, I think I have made my last visit. One would be hard pressed to mess up a simple spinach penne salad but putting FROZEN boiled potatoes in it did just that. When potatoes are frozen, their texture just gets weird. If I hadn't been pressed for time I would have returned the salad. It's not just that - the greens are not always fresh either. Tried the Caribbean shrimp salad once and the shrimp were small, over cooked and rubbery. I guess I'm a slow learner but have finally gotten the picture. This place is not a good value.

780 W Sam Houston Pkwy N, Houston, Texas 77024  713.586.0800

MY REVIEW: This place is close to my office and I go every once in a while (especially if I need a change of pace from the usual limited fast food choices in the area). However, if you aren't at the Town & Country location before 11:30, you stand in line forever and are lucky if you can find an empty table (that is if you can find a parking space to begin with). Note to Memorial/T&C area socialites -- please remember that some of us are on our lunch BREAKS and we don't have the luxury of taking extended lunches or even a choice on what time we can go to lunch (this applies to all restaurants in the area, not just CE).

I usually get the salads or the vegetable tart; however they pulled one of my favorite salads off the latest menu (the nicose) and the last time I got the tart, the crust was so hard you had to use a knife to cut through it. The greek salad is still good and I like the ability to add extras to my salads from the oasis bar. I agree with some comments about the pricing -- some items seemed to be priced higher than what they are worth. And I don't like having to fight through the order lines to get my food - a separate pickup spot (and move the oasis bar to that area) would be helpful.

MY REVIEW: Cafe Express is still a good fast, casual restaurant but it sure isn't what it used to be. I ordered one of my favorite dishes, the Spinach Penne Salad (w/ chicken breast) and it's just so disappointing that they hand you a bowl that is right out of refrigeration. I understand the need to keep ingredients like spinach, carrots and celery crisp and fresh but the flavors don't develop until you are about 3/4 done with the salad. And the pasta was undercooked and cold, hard pasta isn't what you want to eat. The Chicken Rustica sandwich is also not as good. Less chicken for one thing. The pesto lacked a real punch so you hardly knew it was on there. The Oasis Bar is still awesome and it saved my salad! I guess my laments are typical for a company gone corporate (W*endy's ownership).

MY REVIEW: For several years now, my family and I have eaten at Cafe Express. I love the concept...fast food, quality ingredients, trendy atmosphere. This said, my fiancee and I have given it it's last chance. Today we met for lunch, and as usual, her chicken salad sandwich was under-seasoned, and my grilled chicken sandwich was over-cooked. The breads that accompany the sandwiches are also not so good. My other 'go-to' Cafe Express choice is the Bleu Cheese Bacon Burger. I want so desperately to like this place but the burger is almost ALWAYS over cooked. They are so close to having a really good thing! Just show your line cooks how to season properly and not over cook things. If you're going to charge those prices for fast food, it better be worth it. As I see it, at this point, it simply isn't. I guess I just expected more from the Del Grande Group.

MY REVIEW: I like Cafe Express. Everything I've had there is delicious from the penne pasta to the soup, to the chicken salad sandwich. It's nice to go there for a change of pace from the "regulars" we go to. We rarely have to wait very long, and it's a good place to take the kids. They love the pasta and cheese sauce.

MY REVIEW: I love Cafe Express!!! The food is great no matter what you order. They have wonderful Black Bean Soup. The Veggie Chef Salad is soooo good try it with the Lemon Olive Oil instead of the Creamy Parmesean. The Turkey Burger is the best with Swiss and Avocado and add some of the spicy Mustard from the Oasis Table. The Half Roasted Chicken with Spinach and Mushrooms is to die for but only if you're hungry. The Signature Triple Deli (aka Trio or Express Salad Bowl) is really good with the Lemon Olive Oil. The Southwestern Turkey Chili is sooooo good.

They make everything fresh. The employees are really nice and very helpful. I eat at the Baybrook location and it is wonderful. The atmosphere is really neat. I love the light shades and the stars.

Thank you Cafe Express keep up the good work.

MY REVIEW: I have been coming to this location for about 2 years and have seen its ups and downs. I thought this place was making progrss earlier this year, but was sorely mistaken. Over the last 3 months, the service has gotten progressively worse. I used to go in and was greeted by a friendly staff (including management) and this has all changed now. The food is good (albiet cold at times), but the new service will not have me coming back.

MY REVIEW: I was really disappointed in the food during my last two visits. The burger had no flavor and the Greek salad was "swimming" in dressing. I wonder what happened to this location? The food used to always be reliable. I also don't care for the way the restaurant was remodeled. The booths make it feel like S*ouper Salad. I probably won't go back again.

MY REVIEW: Well, well... a facelift for the Cafe Express on West Gray. I wonder what was wrong with the place? Essentially what they did was ruin everyone's view of everyone else! I used to LOVE to eat at the West Gray location, one for the food and two because it was a great place to people watch. But not anymore. They have installed booths with huge walls that leave you with no line of site to most of the tables. Cafe Express used to be my favorite place to check out the babes, now, I'll just order to go, why eat there (other than the Oasis Table) when you can hardly see anyone. Why Schiller/Del Grande Group, why?? Did y'all do a research study and find that no one wants to see anyone when they eat at Cafe Express?
