Profile Description: Linda Williams is the "chef/owner" of the very successful Tea Room, Ashland House on Westview. Open since 1986, this quaint restaurant has been serving up Williams' special homemade recipes for eighteen years. Her home cooking and delicate ambiance has inspired imitation from other want-to-be restaurateurs, but people who know come from far and wide for Williams' creations. With her focus on serving only food made with the finest ingredients, Williams has earned a base of loyal customers.

MY REVIEW: I attended a meeting at the Ashland House last week and was VERY disappointed. I and several others at the table had the 'high tea' that I thought when I ordered it, a little overpriced. Afterwards, I thought it was VERY overpriced. The tiny tea sandwiches (exactly three, a maximum of 2" across) were okay but not outstanding.

The service was awful (our party was only 8 ladies, not like it would run the waiter's feet off). We had to literally hunt down the waiter to get drink refills of hot tea, iced tea, and water. I waited fifteen minutes for the cream to go with my scone. To add insult to injury, the 'policy' of the restaurant is one table=one check, so they refused us separate checks. And because we had reserved a 'private' room (more like a table in a nook, NOT private, no door, etc.) for ten people (which would NOT have fit in that 'room') we were required to pay for ten people even though there were only eight of us, so the gal who had done the reservations was stuck with an almost $80 lunch tab!

The crowning blow was that as soon as the first of our party left, the owner and the waiter (magically visible now) descended on the table and started clearing it, literally taking a cup out of my hands. At my gimlet eye, she stated that the room was reserved for two hours at a time and they had another party coming in.

NEVER AGAIN.

MY REVIEW: I attended a Bridesmaid's Luncheon at the Ashland House on July 6, 2007. This was my first visit as I am from Indiana. Not only was I impressed by the chicken salad and the delicious desserts, but our server was fantastic. Very good food and very personable. This was a great choice! I would highly recommend it to anyone.

MY REVIEW: Ist visit was yesterday. I have lived in the area a few years... how did I not know about this place?

Food was outstanding. I had the chicken and dumplings with a house salad and tea. This stuff was the best I've had in years. Salad tastes fresh picked from the garden, very crisp. The chicken and dumplings was as good as I remember my grandma's was... and the freshbaked roll with honeybutter was the bomb. Can't wait to try more.... Service was fine. Also, all the employees had lunch there in shifts, starting at about 1:30, both wait staff and kitchen staff. That proves to me that they too know this stuff is good.

MY REVIEW: Ashland House is a favorite "ladies' place" sort of ambiance: one room is papered to look like a library, another has a tree growing through the ceiling and several of the rooms are painted with charming garden vistas. I've never found the service particularly good - often have to hunt down a waiter to order or to get a refill or the check. The flavored ice tea, coffee, chicken and fruit salad, and desserts are terrific. Several sandwiches have been fair. Prices are moderate and fair. I recommend pairing a visit here with the delightful Becker Books, a rabbit warren of a used bookstore, about half a block east on Westview. The restaurant has a large shaded patio that faces the parking lot but that is set back from the street, so quieter than others. Worth putting on anyone's "outdoor eating" list.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I met at Ashland House for lunch today as we do every week, sometimes several times. I have so many favorite dishes that are served here, the stuffed chicken breast with roasted red pepper sauce, the grilled chicken breast with red and yellow tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella cheese drizzled with balsamic vinegar dressing, the Ashland House grilled chicken breast with avocado on toasted focaccia bread, I could go on and on. And the desserts, the brownie delight, the delicious lemon and chocolate pies, oh and the fresh apple cake! My husband has his own favorites.

This is a restaurant where I see my neighbors and my friends and where I made new friends, a unique welcoming environment with great food. I highly recommend Ashland House.

MY REVIEW: We visited Ashland House for the first time this weekend and it will definitely be a new family favorite. The decor is welcoming and our hostess and waitstaff were very friendly, a big surprise after some of the reviews we'd read here. My husband had the beef tenderloin "steak stack" with blue cheese and beefsteak tomatoes, which he raved about. My mother chose the "Greek chicken" which was delicious and just the right portion size for lunch. I had the cheese soup, which I didn't care for, but my tomato basil and bacon quiche was excellent. My husband and I also shared an order of onion rings, which were fabulous. We had hoped to try the apricot pie, but were just too stuffed from the wonderful meal. Ashland House is our new neighborhood favorite -- we'll be back!

MY REVIEW: I have been going to the Ashland house for many years. I even got married there. My entire guest at the wedding said how wonderful the food was. The best thing about getting married there was the place was already decorated. We said our vows in between the trees growing out of the restaurant. It was also a very reasonable price for a wedding being catered. I even had an old time car take us a way to finish off the mood of the restaurant. I had Linda the owner bake the groom’s cake. Everyone said that was the best chocolate cake they ever ate. I love all the deserts they serve there. I also had my bride’s maid lunch there. It’s a great place to get a group of your friends together and have a lunch. I will be going back again.

MY REVIEW: TERRIBLE FOOD! I was excited about taking my husband to Ashland House for Valentine's Day dinner. I will NEVER walk in that restaurant again!!!!!!! We ordered the most expensive food on their set "Valentine Menu" the beef tenderloin, medium rare. The tenderloin was well done with not even a hint of pink in the meat. We sent back out dinner and Linda, the owner, whipered with the waitress while pointing at our table. When we received our second steak it was smaller, tough, and again overcooked. I told the waitress that the food was still not right but we were not given any other options. NEVER AGAIN!

MY REVIEW: I think that this restaurant is a great place to eat. The wait staff is excellent, and they always have a smile on their face. The food is to die for, and they are willing to work with you if you aren't satisfied with certain items. I think that the people who come on this site and write bad reviews do not need to waste their time. The true Ashland House fans really know how the food and owner are. If you go for lunch, make sure you save room for desert. The Brownie Delight is excellent, and, it's very ample in size. Will definately continue to go!

MY REVIEW: My first visit was perfect! I can't wait to go again, the brie/pear sandwich was positively to-die-for! The fruit soup was divine. I was too full to attempt a dessert but you can bet I'll be back very soon! My only complaint is that Saturday lunch is the only time I could ever eat there... pity because this is the kind of place I'd love to eat at many times a week! :)

MY REVIEW: Just thought I would let everyone know that this great place now offers a continental breakfast. Its great!!! They have the best cinnamon and orange rolls and wonderful muffins too. At this place you can have your muffins and eat them too especially outside on the patio..... The coffee is always hot and comes in many flavors.

MY REVIEW: I went there for my birthday and was so insulted. The other woman was right in saying that the owner is rude. My food was cold (an Asland Club). The chicken was dry and cold. I asked if I could have a new one made, but was told they would reheat it. Now I got a hot and dry sandwich. I asked to speak to Linda the owner and was told she was too busy at the moment to see me. Well I too WILL NEVER GO BACK.

MY REVIEW: Previously, I only had glowing reviews for Ashland House. Unfortunately, I have to go on record with a retraction. My tea sandwiches were dry, as though the ingredients had been made a long, long time ago and the bread was stale. The soup was served luke warm and the ingredients were sparse and undercooked. In addition, my server practically disappeared after the meal was served. She never even came back to see if I wanted to have another beverage! I went over to the owner who was sitting at a table with her friends and asked if I might speak to her in private about my complaints so that I didn't embarass her in front of her company. She remained sitting and didn't feel it was necessary for her to get up. Her attitude said it all. She couldn't care less about my dissatisfaction and had no desire to make an effort to correct the problems either! It was more like I didn't have to eat there and she had plenty of business without me. I will never go back there again!!!

MY REVIEW: I wonder why the chicken fried steak gravy is so bland. It's too dark and the flour is not cooked out. It was cold too. So was the entree. I sent it back to get reheated but I think they tried to re-fry it because it was greasy when it came back out. The next time I went, I tried something called chicken in pastry. None of the vegetables were cooked, and there was some type of mayonaise sauce in it that was too sweet. I wish they would learn to cook food properly because I only have an hour for lunch and 1/2 the time I have to wait for a re-cook. I REFUSE to go back. Even their soups lack flavor. The so called cheddar cheese soup also had uncooked vegetables in it. And the place is EXPENSIVE for what you get. $7 for a burger? Get with it folks! No wonder their dinner and breakfast attempts went far South.

MY REVIEW: THUS IS THE MOST WONDERFULLY QUAINT PLACE TO TAKE FRIENDS. THE ATMOSPHERE IS SUPER AND THE FOOD CANNOT BE TOPPED FOR FRESHNESS, QUALITY AND PREPARATION. eVERY FOOD ITEM IS PREPARED AS YOUR MOTHER WOULD HAVE-NOT OUT OF BOXES AND CANS. YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT PRESERVATIVES! MY HUSBAND AND I LIKE TO EAT THERE AT LEAST THREE TIMES A MONTH. THE FOOD IS CONSISTENTLY EXTRAORDINARY!

MY REVIEW: My first visit was most pleasant and will most definately not be my last. Very attentive staff, sweet, beautiful decor, and the food was suprisingly delicious. I enjoyed the apricot tea and tea sandwich plate with tomato basil soup. I unfortunately was to full to eat dessert, but they looked lovely. Plan to return soon.

MY REVIEW: If you are looking for great homecooked like food, with great prices, great service look no further this wonderful little "Tea Room" is the bomb. It has a great staff that will never leave you wondering whats for dessert and a menu with daily lunch specials. You have to try the "Ashland House Burger" it comes with fresh cut french fries that are out of this world. The dessert I had was "French Cream" it was just like a cheesecake with out the crust covered with tons of fresh strawberries. The owner is always on sight to greet customers, located in the heart of Spring Branch this restaurant is a must.....Oh yeah you have to try the "Cheese Soup" its great.

MY REVIEW: This lovely, charming and very clean restaurant offers lots of variety including salads, sandwiches and daily lunch specials. The atmosphere is very friendly with plenty of beautiful decorations and different themes in each room. This is not your average "Tea Room" with all the manly-men eating lunch and your occasional "Houston Area Celebrity". The dessert menu is incredible with over 8 choices and the dessert of the day that I had which was the "Upside-Down Spiced Pear Cake" was incredible. The owner is always on site to greet customers and the waitstaff is always attentive to every detail making sure there is not an empty or dirty plate on your table. Please visit this great place soon..you will not be disappointed...

MY REVIEW: For a tea room this place is off the hook! There's hardly ever a wait for a table, the waitstaff is very attentive (& good looking!) and the food is SUPERB at a reasonable price! The Grilled Chicken & Berry Salad is great for people watching their Carb intake, while my favorite special is on Wednesday's... Chicken Enchiladas. Make sure to reserve your dessert when you make your order b/c they have "THE" BEST DESSERTS in town! The Coconut Meringue Pie always sell out and I look forward to the Ashland House Banana Split Pie whenever Linda decides to make it. Definitely the "Jewel of Spring Branch" this quaint restaurant makes you feel like you're home.

MY REVIEW: I have not found a better place for a "traditional" Victorian style Tea Room lunch. The finger sandwiches are plentiful and are in no way skimpy plus the variety of fillings please any palate such as chicken salad, shredded cheddar cheese with watercress, cream cheese with pecans and pineapples, and grated carrot and ginger are some of the choices. Included with the "finger"/tea sandwiches (the bread has the crust removed) is a selection of soups. I always get the cheese soup that has mushrooms, onions, and carrots in it. My daughter and I took a friend for her birthday on my last visit and she got the tropical fruit soup which she said tasted like a smoothee and she also said she loved it and her food and the atmosphere, too! My daughter ordered a Brie and pear sandwich with the soup of the day which was shrimp and mushroom bisque. We usually share each others food but this time I was only offered a mere morsel as my daughter devoured her food. The menu has so may selections that even the finickiest of eaters would be able to find something of their pleasing.

Don't let the name "tea room" discourage you "manly men". They have ample portions and their soup of the day could be tortilla soup or even baked potato soup. They also have daily specials that are not on the menu and great desserts. They are open Mon-Sat 11am-3pm. For a while they had eliminated servers and it was self-service which "stunk" but they have gone back to their original and charming service which always include "cheese straw" cookies served to you complimentarily before you even order.

My favorite room to eat in is the Garden Room that has two really tall trees growing out through the roof but there are smaller rooms such as the Library Room and also larger ones such as the Ashland Room that has a mural of the original Ashland House in the Heights where they first started out. They also offer dining "al fresco", outside on their covered patio. They have flavored teas both hot and cold that are offered and a great selection of tea related gifts. Ashland House is a must for someone in search of "the ultimate tea room"!

MY REVIEW: This was my first trip to Ashland house, but won't be the last.. I went with a co-worker for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I expected a pink house with old ladies sipping tea, but found the Stuffed Chicken excellent!

I had to try dessert of Banana Pie. It was so rich and delicious!

Great Choice for lunch
