Ginza Japanese Restaurant

MY REVIEW: There is no weak point at Ginza, at least not for me and my wife. We are from New York and therefore spoilt when it comes to Japanese food. Ginza has become part of our routine. Take out at least once a week, and I go there with clients. I have not found any better place in Houston.

MY REVIEW: Hands down one of the best sushi restaurants in town, and I've been to most of them. Not a place to see and be seen, the focus of this restaurant is good food. Very authentic japanese fare, though I admit most times I am there primarily for the sashimi. What sets this place apart I believe, is quality and consistency - many places in town simply do not know how to thaw the fish without destroying its texture - Ginza on the other hand seems to have got this art down to a science. Their sashimi portions are larger than most places, which I don't mind in the least. On the sushi side of things I find them to be more on par with T*aiko, though I find some of their offerings to be better (pepper tuna and their spicy salmon). The Ginza roll is a real treat and should be tried at least once.
Decor is minimal and lends itself more to a relaxed lunch/dinner rather than a business lunch or romantic night out. Like many reviewers mentioned there is a waitress there who is pretty assertive and will try and give your recommendations - this is her nature however and we've never felt pressured by her in any way. The tab can add up quickly, especially if you order sashimi.
Side note, very rarely they will have otoro! We lucked out one afternoon and managed to get some. Its not stated on the menu but if you ask the waitress will tell you wether they have any or not.
Overall a great restaurant at a decent value, I plan to return many, many times.

MY REVIEW: The best sushi restaurant in Houston. Ginza is small and traditional, with a very friendly and knowledgeable staff (they remembered my favorites in spite of the fact I've only managed to visit four times in about six months). Presentation is good, but what sets Ginza apart from the growing sushi crowd is the quality of the fish; everything I order is fresh and flavorful, on par with the better Japanese restaurants in L.A. and San Francisco. Pricing is reasonable, and seating is comfortable; definitely one of my favorite places to eat in the city.

MY REVIEW: A really nice small Japanese restaurant with a traditional feeling. Not the hyper modern feeling of many of the new establishments. In addition the fish is usually of excellent quality (which over the last few years has become the norm in Houston!). There is one waitress which is usually very pushy and you may end up with a bill a bit larger than you like. She has a tendency to push the most expensive dish whether it is a good day or not! I would also recommend to the owner that he makes the Sashimi a little smaller as the pieces are too big for most people to eat in one bite. You could lower the size and increase the number of slices. All Sushi/Sashimi eaters know that it is not the volume but the quality. It is always embarrasing trying to chomp off a piece of fish because it is too big to take in one bite. A messy affair indeed!

MY REVIEW: This place is simply the best.... I have tried a countless number of other overpriced "nice" sushi places with sketchy fish and wished I came to Ginza instead. The staff is great and the food is always a treat.

MY REVIEW: Great sushi most of the time. Good sized fish on not so much sushi rice. One of the waitresses was rather pushy and got us to order some special (rather expensive) fatty tuna that turned out to be not too fresh. Other than that, every sushi I had there have been great. If you like fatty tuna, I would order couple of pieces and make sure they are good before ordering more.
Their udon soups are good as well. Overall, very good Japanese food.

MY REVIEW: I have been here a number of times and to many other Japanese restaurants in Houston and in Japan. This is the most consistently good and authentic Japanese resturant in Houston, Texas.

MY REVIEW: This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Houston.
They actually know about authentic Japanese food -- I can ask for Cha Soba (cold noodles), Kani Zosui (rice soup w/ crab), Ankimo (monkfish liver), Mirugai (giant clam), and they won't give me strange looks ("Huh?") like most "sushi" restaurants in Houston.
Pros: 1) Good service, fresh fish, large portions, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, authentic Japanese food. 2) The uni (sea urchin) is fresh and sweet, not bitter or dry. I consider this to be a good barometer of overall quality, since low turnaround in general means low turnaround for uni, which is immediately noticable. 3) The sake (salmon) is fresh too; it does not taste like it has absorbed odors from the rest of things. 4) The hamachi (yellow tail) is fresh with that wonderous aftertaste, instead of a bitter or fishy aftertaste. 5) Same for shiro maguro (albacore) and saba (mackerel).
Cons: 1) Their prices are a little high, even considering the good quality and serving size. I've seen other restaurants in Dallas that are just as good, but less expensive. 2) The ankimo is frozen and thus kills the taste, or sometimes it is just not available, since they don't prepare it themselves, owing to low American demand.
I drive all the way from Conroe to visit this restaurant at least once a month.

MY REVIEW: Service was pretty good, but the sushi was nothing special. A little pricey and lacked flavor. I'd say this place is simply mediocre. Good points is it is clean and nice ambiance.

MY REVIEW: This restaurant is by far one of the best sushi bars in Houston. I've never had the pleasure of being waited on by such a courteous and attentive staff. The portions were larger than life and the quality was delicious. This has become one of my favorite restaurants, especially for swank evening dining. The above-mentioned Abby obviously has no taste or distinctive senses. I recommend this restaurant to any sushi afficionado who understands quality.

MY REVIEW: One of the best and most consistent sushi restaurants in Houston. Wait staff is attentive. Authentic and fresh. Highly recommend. Just ask for what is fresh.

MY REVIEW: This restaurant reaffirms the fact that it's about QUALITY not QUANTITY!! Who cares that the sushi is x-tra large, instead of reasonable, double-bite size?! Their seaweed is gummy, sashimi strangely flaky and service a fluke. I guess it's the yuppy area that gives this place ANY kind of business... Another thing for the reviewer that gave this place a good review: I'm not saying anything about M*iyako's, but in Japan, sushi IS FASTFOOD!

MY REVIEW: Although the pieces were large, they lacked flavor; the fish probably wasn't fresh, even though I ate there on a Friday. The menu didn't offer much variety or complex offerings. Prices were reasonable but not special. I don't understand why this place gets good reviews.

MY REVIEW: One of the top two sushi places in Houston. The size, quality, and freshness of the suchi and sashimi here makes their counterpart from Miyako look like fast food. If you are in for real Japanese food, Ginza is the place. Rule of thumb, if the menu has Japanese at the back, its a real Japanese restaurant!
