MY REVIEW: I had driven past this restaurant 100s of times but never stopped. Because I had a hankering for chinese takeout and this place was so close, I thought I'd give it a shot. The atmosphere was so welcoming, we decided to stay and eat. The service was excellent all the way around: frequent refills on my iced tea (Cokes are sold by the can), suggestions, and check ins, without hovering.
The food was very good, too. We had crab wontons, Mongolian Beef, and Spicy Chicken (which was made with fresh jalapenos, yum!). I am very picky about the quality of meat and both the chicken and the beef were of good quality. The dishes were standard Chinese/American fare and the flavor was just what I expected and hoped for. But, I hadn't had crab wontons that tasty in awhile (except for PF C*hang's, which are just over the top): they were fresh and crispy and obviously homemade. Also, I grabbed some shrimp eggrolls to go and they were huge and delicious.
One last thing: the music playing in the restaurant was pretty good, too! Kind of 40's jazzy; not your normal elevator music. It fit the cozy atmosphere well. Now I know why there are always a bunch of nice cars outside this place, and I definitely recommend it for a quick quiet dinner when you're in the area.

MY REVIEW: Great restaurant. Food is always excellent. Great lunch menu. They may not call me by name but they sure remember my lunch order. Service is fast and efficient. Family has been eating here for years.

MY REVIEW: We order out from this place quite a bit. This place is very good. I agree with some of the other visitors that the braised prawns are very good - that is all I order from this place. I have never dined there, so I don't know the decor, etc., but the food is very good and if you want it delivered, the delivery has been pretty fast (I only have ordered on weekdays).

MY REVIEW: We went here based on the recommendation in the HOUSTON CHRONICLE about the best egg rolls in Houston, and boy was that right. These were, without a doubt, the best egg rolls we have had in the Houston area. They are large, fresh, and stuffed, actually resembling a burrito more than an eggroll. The fillings were crisp, and you could actually tell what was in them, rather than it being an indiscernible paste. The entrees, soups, fried rice, and appetizers were all very good. The place is small, but it was intimate rather than cramped, and I liked the decor. Service was good, and the restaurant was very crowded on the Friday night we visited. We will be going back.

MY REVIEW: Being raised in the melting pot of Los Angeles where great seafood is plentiful and secret "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants thrive, culture oozing out of their kitchens, Houston Texas was, in my eyes, a far cry from home. With the Gulf being ravaged from Hurricane Katrina, the seafood here is just far from anything my pallette is used to. I slao have been on a mission to find an authentic Chinese food restaurant, and it took me 6 long months to find it. Now that I have, I must pass it along as I am an avid food lover and cook myself.
Since I was a child, I always had a place where I would go to get my Chinese food. It was called S*oo Way, and it was around for so long that my mother worked there as a cashier when she was 13 and as I was growing up, the owners STILL ran it. I'm telling you the BEST food came out of that tiny little place... I believe I have found their distant relatives out here in Houston. The Ambassador uses all organic vegetables and all white meat. Their seafood is shipped in from the Pacific, and is some of the best you can get. The owners have been there for 30 years and know all their customers. They make it a point to come to your table and ask you if everything is ok - Every time.
I recommend the braised prawns, shrimp in lobster sauce, shrimp fried rice, kung pao chicken, jumbo shrimp egg rolls, chow mein, or even their moo goo gai pan. Nothing is greasy, every bite is full of flavor, and the portions and meat are very generous - you will not go home hungry. If you order a shrimp dish, I guarantee you will have enough shrimp for your vegetables and rice. It's definitely not your $4.99 3 item meal deal type of place, but it's not over the top either. I would say being overly cautious including tax and tip it will probably run you $15.00 a plate, however if you have children there is PLENTY to share. Most everything comes with steamed rice on the side too. I would highly recommend this place to travelers and Houstonians, as it is by far hands down the best Chinese Food Restaurant in Houston.
Did I mention they deliver too? YES, they do!!! I recently called after a very long day filled with meetings, and didn't get a chance to even get to the phone until 9:30 PM. Mind you, they close at 10. They were so accomidating that they took my order and one of the women dropped my food off to me on her way home. It was 10:20 PM when my food arrived, too hot for me to eat it was so fresh, and even at that hour after I'm SURE she was working all day, she greeted me with a smile like it was 10 in the morning. When I gave her a well-deserved 10 dollar tip, the look on her face was truly worth a thousand words. I would do it over again a million times. I hope you try the Ambassador Chinese Restaurant and see for yourself really great food still does exist.

MY REVIEW: I have been eating at this fabulous restaurant for almost 25 years now, and it is the absolute best. The menu is versatile and offers something for everyone's tastes- I love the Happy Family, Hot Braised Prawns, Almond Shrimp and Jumbo Shrimp Egg Rolls. Every item is top quality- very lean meats, very fresh seafood and always fresh, crunchy vegetables- this is the best chinese food in Houston! Wendy and her husband Henry are the very attentive owners, and treat all of their customers like gold! The Ambassador is the very best Chinese restaurant in town, and it is the only place that really can satisfy my constant desire for GREAT chinese food.

MY REVIEW: I cannot understand the few bad reviews the Ambassador has recieved on this website. It is truly some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Certainly the best in Houston. Our meal here tonight was memorable and satisfying. For a Monday the place was busy but quiet and comfortable. The hot & sour soup-something I rarely order anymore because of the horrible versions ususally available-was simple and delicious. The egg rolls were a bit oily on the plate, but they were very crunchy and light, and tasty. For an entree, I ordered an old favorite, beef pan-fried-noodles. The enourmous platter arrived piles high with dark glistneing beef slices, and bright green vegetables. The noodles were far superior to any I've ever had-they seemed to be hand-made, not the typical dried chinese noodles, or worse yet, spaghetti. The beef was transcendent... so very tender and nothing short of luscious. This is Chinese comfort food in every way.
By the way this place is incredibly friendly, and the owner makes a point to chat with her customers. She has many interesting stories about her 30 years as owner of this wonderful restaurant.
If you are revolted by all of the Chinese buffets, and if your love affair with P.F.C*hang's and P*ei Wei is over, head straight to The Ambassador Chinese Restaurant. You'll be welcomed with open arms, and you will leave very, very happy.

MY REVIEW: I have been going to this restaurant for 24 YEARS!!! I have never had a bad meal. Wendy know my family and has watched my family grow. One should know that if you are ordering Kung Pao anything, it is the hightest in calories that you can get in a chinese restaurant. The egg rolls are wonderful and yes, they are fried. I suggest you try the steamed vegatables with chicken or shrimp and ask for the wonderful ginger pepper sauce on the side. Then go out for a jog!!

MY REVIEW: I owe my heart an apology and a 3-mile jog - this has got to be the greasiest Chinese food I've had in Houston. When you pick up an egg roll to take a bite, then reach for your iced tea glass, and you can't hold on to the glass and tea goes all over the table, it's time to take a serious look at how things are done in the kitchen.
That egg roll (a big one, I'll admit) was part of a lunch special and it was literally swimming in a puddle of oil on the plate. My entree - kung pao chicken - wasn't much better. You can tell they put some thought into the presentation, with grated vegetables a nice touch, but the sauce resembled an unshaken vinaigrette where you can see how the oil separates from the rest of it. The fried rice was OK, and the hot and sour soup was great, but it wasn't enough to offset the unnecessary amount of fat in the meal.
Yes, the owner did greet me at the door and she was very sweet. The service was quick (too quick; I had barely taken two slurps of my soup when the entree came out... it couldn't possibly have been prepared to order). And the price at lunch was certainly right. But there are several other Asian places in the area that have learned that stir frying doesn't have to be greasy.

MY REVIEW: Wonderful food. Try spicy Manchurian dishes...they are the best you can get in Houston. Dumplings are also great. Started going regularly (once a month)since last year. I highly recommend this place if you like good, spicy chinese cuisine

MY REVIEW: I have visited this restaurant almost weekly for the past 6 years and we keep coming back for more. Wendy always makes ours special, just for us! I would definitely recommend the giant shrimp egrolls over the regular eggrolls and her fried pork dumplings are excellent. Some of our faved include Tripple Delight, Black Pepper Shrimp and Double Pan Fried Noodles. The hot-and-sour soup is the best I have ever enjoyed and have not been able to find anything with as much flavor elsewhere. Wendy choses the best meats... nothing is fatty, ever! So the quality is very consistent. It's a comfortable restaurant without any super fancy decor... if you would like a good, tasty meal go to Ambassador!

MY REVIEW: I work for a hotel in the Med Center. I just called for the restaurant to fax a menu over here for one of our guests that wanted to go for lunch on Firday, July 23. The person who answered the phone said she was closed and could not fax the menu to us. What a shame this hotel will never recommend this place to anyone!

MY REVIEW: Ambassador was highly rated by a friend. We like "authentic" Chinese food. We don't like the kind of food they cooked in Houston 30 years ago. Ambassador will send you back to old times. That's not good, by my tastes. The place was dreadful, and we haven't been back.

MY REVIEW: Awesome food. Very nice host and very courteous staff. The important thing is for people from India, I think this will be the closest they can get to the spice and sauce levels they might be missing from desi style "chilli chicken" etc. The good thing is that this place has equally great vegatarian preparations, the munchurian and egg plant etc are really great.
Check this place out desis, you won't regret it !

MY REVIEW: I've been eating here for 15 years and have always had a great meal. Wendy, the owner, knows most of her customers and treats us as guests in her home. The food is fresh, the service is good (they know my order by heart) and friendly. This is a very reasonably priced restaurant and it never disappoints. Lunch time is great as it seems busier at night. This place has almost what one would call a cult following and, in some ways, I hate to tell everyone about it!

MY REVIEW: The Ambassador Chinese Restaurant is the most authenic of all Chinese resaturants in Houston. Wendy is the owner and her husband is the Chef. We have been eating there for about 20 years. Our whole family loves the special salad. You order the salad by the number of people inyour party. It is mixed at the table and you wonder why you have ordered anything else. It is super good. Through the years, we have probably had everything on the menu and we like it all. The entire staff takes good care of everyone there.
The place is small, very clean and pretty. Wendy makes you feel like you are one of her family. Try it... you will like it.
