MY REVIEW: after reading many reviews, I was a bit hesitant to try it out. First, there was alot of people saying the whole experience was way over priced. Second, alot of people were saying the food wasn't soo hot. Third, people were saying the ambiance was not what was expected. And fourth, people were saying the magic was crap. Well, to all those haters out there, all I can say is that I had a HELL OF A TIME! First, for a 3 hour night with a loved one or close friends, the entire experience was amazing. The service was great, and we were seated promtly. (make a reservation). Second, the food was delicious. They start off with all the bread you can eat, then if you want, you can order good sized appetizers for 5 or 6 bucks. Then comes your main course, delicious! I ahd the striploin, it was great! Third, the low lights, the piano bar, the drinks, the laughs, and the good times were perfect. Its a very cosy feel, almost like you are in a 1920's lounge bar, just having a good time and talking about the past. Very low key, melow type feeling. Fourth, the magic was great! After you eat, there is a show every hour, and to kill the time for the next show, they have 2 different side shows you can go too. The magicians were great, and before you know it, the time is up for your show to start. I went with my fiancee and a close married couple. Over all, my bill between me and my fiancee was 170 bucks. But with that, came 3 hours of memories, a poloroid picture of our group, a great 4 course meal, 2 mini magic shows, one main big magic show, a bottle of wine, and 8 wiskey and cokes. Overall, it was great. Not an every weekend thing, but a really good time. Everyone must go at least once.

MY REVIEW: Very interesting, unique place. Service was great, very attentive. Only suggestion I have would be better lighting in the buffet area. Some of us older folks' eyesight isn't all that it used to be and so I know personally I had to ask what items were before choosing and I overhead others having to do the same.

MY REVIEW: My Houston singles in the Eight Friends Out dinner club went to Magic Island on Sunday for the brunch and had a fun time! If you haven't gone, it IS worth a trip! The decor is a combination of Disneyworld and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and you feel a bit like you are on a ride and not at a restaurant, but the service there is superb. Ask and ye shall receive! I mention this, because few Houston restaurants know the class act of service that this restaurant gives. They had nice jazz music as we walked in, and EVERY person working there bent over backwards for us! To them, it's clear that the customer is always right! The buffet contained both breakfast and dinner items--roast beef, nice chicken and fish entrees, and lovely fruit platters. The magic act at the tail end of our event was surprisingly funny and entertaining. (I grew up with magicians in the family, so I am a bit ho-hum about it; I was pleasantly surprised.) Over all, they did a great job, and I would definitely recommend a return visit, even if it IS a bit like being in an elegant tomb!

MY REVIEW: I had read the reviews here before we went so I was very leary and on my guard. However, we ended up having a very enjoyable evening. I purchased the "New Year's Package" for $100 that included meals, show, and champagne at midnight.

The meal was very good including some of the best lobster bisque I'd ever had. The entre was also good, nothing spectacular, but good nonetheless. I didn't really expect 4-star quality but it rivaled what you'd get at any mid-priced restaurant. By the way, the lemon cake was delicious. Dessert was not included in the package deal so the tab started running...

The magic shows were entertaining with the main show being the best. We were lucky enough to sit on the front row in all the theaters we went to so I never had a problem with leg room. However, I could tell from the frequent bumps on the back of my chair that the people behind me obviously were.

The disco was going strong but it reminded me of a high school dance---loud "canned" music and everyone sitting around the edges of the dance floor but no one dancing. There apparently is not a non-smoking area but if you avoid the main bar area, it's not too bad.

All together, we had 2 desserts and 2 cups of coffee that was not included as part of our package. This added to my parking and valet came to a grand total of $14.95 in additional expenses for the night. After reading some of the reviews on this board, I couldn't believe it was so reasonable. All I can figure is that the people who have complained about "hidden costs" or "inflated checks" have had so much to drink that they've lost count of the margaritas.

This was our first time to Magic Island and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The staff was courteous, the food was good, the shows entertaining, and the price very reasonable (as long as you don't go overboard with expensive mixed drinks of course).

MY REVIEW: I took my wife of 9 months to Magic Island to surprise her. We have always wanted to try this restaurant since we both grew up in Houston and have always wondered what Magic Island entailed. After reading many bad and a few good reviews, I decided to still try this restaurant out.

Upon arrival we both noticed the very weedy (outdoors in the driveway), dingy, building we questionably polite valet parkers. The initial entrance into the lobby is the best part, given particularly friendly staff and taking a picture. However, once getting on the elevator, we noted the unique aroma of musty carpet and dusty air with drastically old decorations visible through the elevator window (I must add that the decorations were very dusty and gaudy). Once we got to the lounge the environment was more appealing but was smoky. This is a personal preference, but we cannot stand cigarette smoke and there are ash trays everywhere throughout the building (including the hallways) encourage patrons to give healthy doses of second hand smoke throughout the restaurant. Thankfully, a very nice gentleman walked up to us as we were seated in the lounge, gave us a tour of the restaurant, and seated us for dinner. The food was very good in our opinion, especially the French onion soup. The Salmon was a little salty, and yes, once again (as mentioned in another review) they were out of Filet Mignon (on a Saturday night!) The eating environment was very romantic and cozy.

Now for the magic shows- The two smaller shows were occupied most of the time so we did not attend one of these. We did go to the big magic show which was entertaining, but there were some serious problems. First of all, the images of Egyptian women on wall spontaneously baring their breasts (even while clothed in a long dress) seemed disturbing. In the most ancient and advanced civilization in history (for it’s time), why would someone depict Egyptian women in that manner? Next, yes, as someone else has said, the seat are way to small; my legs were deviating to the right and a 45 degree angle the entire show and I am 5’10” (I hit my knee on the seat in front of me when I initially sat down). Finally, the music starting of the show must be from the 70-80’s or something. But the magician and assistant were funny and entertaining.

THE BILL; I didn’t take this part very seriously in reading the other reviews but this restaurant really needs to address this. Like most people, I had an entertainment card. While waiting in line, the people in front of us gave blatant gasps at there bills (and they had an entertainment card). Our bill for two people, one coke, and the mandatory valet parking came to $142!!!!!! They wanted me to sign the dotted line while I explained to them how the price was mathematically required to be $62 and after two or three corrections, this was fixed. I say to you now, DON’T JUST SIGN YOUR BILL, UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR AND CHECK IT CAREFULLY. There other people obviously mumbling about there bill; once again, CHECK YOUR BILL SO THAT YOU DON’T GET RIPPED OFF.

In conclusion, we were glad that we experienced this place, we won’t go back unless they are obvious and drastic changes in the way this place is managed; polite people, terribly maintained property, frequent overcharging, good food, unique concept. Overall, we were glad we went and had the experience.

MY REVIEW: This is the last time I will be going to Magic Island! We went back this year for a birthday celebration based on a visit 2 years ago which was real good but this visit was not so pleasing!!!! Nothing has been done to enhance the place - it is exactly the way it was years ago!!!!!!! The prices have gone up but not the level of food and the service!!!!!!!!!! We had lackluster waiters, we had to ask for things, and the food was something out of the leftover dish!!!! They were out of the Filet Mignon - imagine on a Friday night!!!!!!!!!!! We opted for lamb hoping that would be just as good!!!!!!!! I should have gotten the first clue when I ordered the Lobster Bisque - it was like past instead of soup and not very tasteful or hot. then came the lamb!!!!!! It was just like a plate out of the leftover box - the pieces of lamb with gravy over it and the vegetables and it was warmed in the microwave!!!!! When we told a manager of some sort, his reply was: "I will tell the chef!!!!!!!!!!!". We were never offered anything to take its place - oh well - another restaurnat goes down the tubes because it does not know how to do things that well!!!!!!!

MY REVIEW: I am very disappointed to see the reviews of this place. i have been to magic island on 3 different occasions and have never been disappointed. on my last visit, i was impressed from the moment i pulled up. the gentleman from valet was kind and polite. one opened the car door for me, another gave my husband the claim ticket and then another was waiting at the front door ready to open it for us. the attendents at the front desk were cheerful and friendly. the host upstairs escorted us to a couch where we were to wait for 15 mins before our table was ready. a sweet cocktail waitress offered us drinks while we waited. at dinner, my pasta was delicious however my husband was not too impressed with his red snapper. the magic shows were very entertaining!! i would say that overall it is a lovely place. we even spoke with one of the managers there who was friendly and grateful to hear our compliments. the only thing i would suggest is that they set aside a larger budget for some renovations. it is very clean but could use some touching up here and there. i will definitely return!

MY REVIEW: My date and I went to Magic Island on New Year’s Eve of 2003. I had a bad feeling from the time I walked into the door. The cheap, cheesy interior was the first bad sign. The plastic Hawaiian lays we received at the door were probably the highlight of the evening.

Dinner was mediocre, at best. The portions were small and the food tasteless. Our choice of salad dressing was “house” or none. The coffee tasted like it had been brewed sometime back in the Reagan administration.

The magic shows in the small rooms were pretty good, but the main show was unbelievably bad. The auditorium was very cramped and our view of the stage was blocked by the props. The sound sounds was horrible, and the accompanying audio sounded like the old “on hold” tapes that had been played a few thousand times too many. My date commented that several of the tricks we’d seen that evening were the same ones her eleven year old son can do, and they haven’t changed them since she was there six years ago.

At $190, this rates as the biggest rip-off in Houston. You can achieve basically the same effect at home by making a couple of TV dinners, lighting up a dozen cigarettes in the ashtray, watching an amateur magic video, and flushing two one-hundred dollar bills down the toilet!

MY REVIEW: Going for New Years Eve 2003..have been once before about 3 years ago and loved it. The food was great, the service was excelent. We did wait a bit but that is to be expected in a finer restaurant. Thought the shows were fabulous and we can't wait to go this coming New Years!

MY REVIEW: A few nights ago my husband and I went to Magic Island. Let me just tell ya.....this place is GREAT and UNIQUE. This was my first visit at Magic Island and I loved it!!! I have never been to a restaurant like this before. There is none other like it. Anyways, when me and my husband got there, they seated us in a lounge and served us drinks. The lounge was so beautiful and elegant. I also loved the fabulous setting of ancient egyptian and victorian. Shortly, a waitress escorted us to our table. The dining area was beutiful as well. The food was excellent...and the desert was fantastic. We were then escorted to the magic show. It was very entertaining and what was really great is that it was a combination of MAGIC and COMEDY. Then we watched the close up magic shows, these shows were great as well. Later we went to get our fortune told by physic readers. They were very interesting. I enjoyed it. There were 3 different types of physics such as card readers, palm readers, ect. After that we went to the bar, played black jack, and danced in the disco room.I would have to say that this was worth the price and I had a great time. Overall, Magic Island is the most UNIQUE and one the the BEST restaurants I have been to!!!I would absoloutely love to go again.

MY REVIEW: I have to agree with Melody on her review about Magic Island. I made reservations to take my hubby out for our 5th year anniversary. I was planning for a romantic dinner and entertainment. I saw an offer in the Entertainment coupon book and decided to find out more info. I went online to their website and even emailed them. No reply back at all. I finally called and even told the lady on the phone that my email was never responded to. Anywho, we had reservations for 6:30pm, but ended up having to wait a good while before being seated for dinner. It was an OK wait since we were pretty much alone in the lounge area. I was told there was only about 35 people that night - just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Dinner was nice and romantic.

Food is not really something to rave about, but the service was decent. After dinner, we had to wait again for magic side shows - they won't really start unless they have a good number of people. The magic shows are OK. They are entertaining, but I do not believe the price was worth it. Magic Island overcharges for what they offer. Like Melody reviewed below, the amount you would expect to spend is not at all what was advertised or told over the phone. Besides the hefty bill, my husband and I are glad to have celebrated our night there. We had always wanted to go. But, least we now can saw we went. It was our first visit and will be the last.

MY REVIEW: In plain English, this place sucks. My boyfriend wanted to take me out to a nice restaurant with excellent food and some entertainment. He remembered Magic Island from several years back and thought it would fit the bill. I had always wanted to go, but did not, because I had heard how expensive it was. He really wanted to impress me, poor darling. Unfortunately for him, "impressed" is not the word I would use to describe how either of us felt. What was wrong with our experience? You can read others' comments; these are just a recap. Glad to know the boyfriend and I weren't the only ones disappointed.

1) Dirty, dingy restaurant.

2)Food was lackluster (and that is putting it kindly). Better to say the food was subpar. I had fish, boyfriend had steak. Neither of us liked our food.

3)Our waitress, a high school blond, was rude, inattentive, and slow. If the gratuity had not been already included in our bill, you can rest assured this particular gal would not have received a single cent of our money.

4)The magic shows were sad. The small shows with the sleight of hand was sort of cute, but the big show was just dopey...these poor schmucks--it was embarrassing to watch.

5)This place is desperately in need of new management...I've gone by in the year since I was there and the place looks like it's closed, but apparently it's not.

6) We will never go back, unless we start hearing good things about this place.

MY REVIEW: ON VALENTINES DAY, MY BOYFRIEND TOOK ME TO MAGIC ISLAND TO CELEBRATE. THE ROMANTIC AND ELEGANT ATMOSPHERE SET THE MOOD FOR THE SPECIAL OCCASION. WE WAITED IN THE RECEPTION AREA FOR 30 MIN BEFORE WE WERE SEATED FOR DINNER. I ORDERED FILET MIGNON AND IT WAS SO DELICIOUS THAT THE WAIT WAS WELL WORTH IT. WE PLAN TO TAKE OUR FAMILIES TO MAGIC ISLAND FOR NEW YEAR 2004!

MY REVIEW: Unfortunately, I thought the reviews below were by people who were just too picky about their restaurants. So, with my Entertainment card in hand (get one meal free, a $35.00 value), off to Magic Island I tottered on a surprise date for my boyfriend. Guess what? The folks were right.

We had 6:30 reservations, and did get seated timely. However, the waiting lounge was smoke-filled and somewhat dingy.

We ordered the Seafood Magic appetizer ($22), which was very good, except there were pieces of shell all throughout the crab. I found this to be the same in the crab-stuffed flounder. Someone, please teach these folks how to shell crab!

We enjoyed the food -- the lobster bisque was the best! Dinner itself was fair -- but definitely not bad. As soon as our plates were removed, the hostess offered to escort us to the magic show, completely skipping the offer of dessert (which we had both wanted). Thinking we must be running right at the time for curtain, we rushed along with her. We were not happy when we were put in a close-up magic room for 20 minutes, and no magician showed!

While waiting, I went to the ladies' room. Three stalls -- one had a door that wouldn't shut; one had a non-working toilet. I came out, and they had removed the people from the close-up magic (the magician never showed) to the full magic show.

The magician was very good, and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. I couldn't quite understand why the host told my date and I we were too tall to be on the first two rows (I am 5'2"), but then put a 6'2" guy right in front of me. Maybe he's height dyslexic? The seating for the shows is definitely NOT stadium seating.

After the show, about 20 to 30 women trying to use the 1-working-stall ladies room together was fascinating. We all became friends as we took turns holding the one door closed for each other to make it a 2-stall room.

We went next to the close-up magic show, but alas, it was full with people they had brought straight from dinner. The other close-up room had a sign saying show already in progress. So, we all stood around in the hall. I have to tell you -- the most enteretaining thing about the night was talking and laughing with the other guests while waiting for attention from our hosts.

The close-up magician was very sleight of hand, although those sitting further back probably had a more magical view. Being on the front row right in front of him, I was able to catch a couple of views of coins in the wrong hand before they "magically" changed, and heard clinking on a couple of occasions. Even then, I was enthralled.

We finished with close-up magic, and again, the other close-up magic room was full. So, we headed out. Our thought was to get a palm reading. We waited about 30 minutes, with a couple of people in front of us, and the palm reader was on the same person she started with. We gave up on that idea and went downstairs to leave.

The big shocker of the night was the bill. Keeping in mind that you are told the average couple will spend $100 (including tax, tip, valet, and a couple of drinks each), and I had a $35 off coupon -- our bill was $116! Yes, that was AFTER coupon. The published price of $35 per meal is wrong -- they charge $40. Add $5 for every drink (by the way -- those were NOT diet cokes like I'd ever tasted!), $5 mandatory parking, a 17.5% mandatory (already added in when you check out) gratuity, and then 8.25% tax on top of all that (they even tax the tip!), and you will never, ever ever get out there for a price that doesn't make you feel cheated!

For this kind of money? You're halfway there to getting a ticket to Siegfried and Roy in Vegas. Save a little more, take a weekend, go see the big guys. You'll have a much better time.

We've been there. We tried it. We can say we went to Magic Island. I can say we'll never go back.

MY REVIEW: What a huge disappointment. I brought my grandmother here for her birthday. We had to wait in a large area, where the only seats were in a smoke-filled area. The restaurant was dirty, dusty, old and worn looking. The dining room chairs had hard backs and seat cushions- very uncomfortable. The food was mediocre at best, and the server brought me a dirty soup spoon. It wasn't a spoon with dried food that didn't come off in the dishwasher. It was greasy and had food that came off on my fingers. The waitstaff was very inexperienced, or at least that's how they acted. They passed plates across my face and repeatedly brushed against me while serving. Even though there were no people smoking in the dining room, the air was stale, as if people had been smoking there for years. We bought both copies of the picture they took of us, however, the cashier only charged us for one. Then while we were out front, waiting for the valet to bring our car around, she came out and asked us about the pictures, in front of other customers, making it sound as if we were trying to get out of paying for something. We had to give her cash right there on the front step. It was embarrassing. The "magic shows" were amateurish, amounting to little more than card and rope tricks. For dinner and show for three people, one iced tea (and one refill), one diet coke, one appetizer (that is, one for the entire table), one dessert for my grandmother, two commemorative pictures, tip, and valet parking, we paid $200! Save your time and money. Go anywhere else but here. You'll get better service, better food, better atmosphere, and spend less money! I read the reviews here before I went to eat tonight. I really thought the negative reviews were people who just couldn't be pleased. I was wrong. I can't believe this place is still in business.

MY REVIEW: first visit........... Dinner was good; quiet and romantic setting, food above average. After dinner was escorted to 2 small magic shows followed by the main show........... all 3 were very entertaining. Overall, I would recommend an evening at Magic Island for any "special" occasion. The only annoyance was the presence of children, (kinda crampin` the entertainer`s style) but this can be avoided by reserving for the later shows. Service was excellent!

MY REVIEW: This was our second (and final!) visit to Magic Island, the first being ten years ago, and it has not improved at all. We won a door prize at a medical meeting which supposedly was valued at $100.00 at this restaurant. We were not given an alternative to the $5.00 valet parking. The mixed drink my husbaand ordered was diluted and overpriced at $6.00. The dinners were inferior quality to any restaurant where I would spend $27.00 on one dinner, and the magic shows were similar to those performed for a children's birthday party. In my opinion the entire evening was a ripoff and I would advise anyone contemplating going there, DON'T. You can get a much better value for your money almost anywhere else, and enjoy yourself a lot more.

MY REVIEW: There was nothing magical about this island! My sweetie surprised me with a trip to this place where he has been wanting to go for years. We were both very excited. The ambience was lacking. The "wait" station was dull, dingy and almost reminded me of a wake at a funeral. The food was horrible. We read the reviews prior to going and figured these were the naysayers to a perfectly good evening. But it turns out they were being kind. For the price paid for "magic", the food is simply not acceptable. The magic show was...not. The side show magician was tired, bored, distracted, etc. and looked like he had done his routine until he lacked magic. The only thing that was magicical for my Valentine's Day gift was my sweetie arranging this evening, bringing me flowers and wine and being together. We should have stayed at home and made our own magic!

MY REVIEW: Dinner was scheduled for 10:00 P.M. We got a table at 12:00 AM, 2 hours later. During this time at the bar the ordered Margharita tastesd like pure WATER and this at no AC on. Dinner was worst of worst. Couldn't touch either the glass with water and the 5 minute show after was nothing. And you had to pay for all this more than 100 box!!! Pretty bad experience for a Valentine's day. Never again.

MY REVIEW: We have been visiting the restaurant every year for Valentine's Day since 1996. Our family loves it. It's like a tradition to us. We enjoy the prompt service, some items in the menu more than others, the entertainment and the whole atmosphere. It is a pricy restaurant, but perhaps that's why it has kept its very nice environment. If someone like "Misty" wants to be critical because you have to pay a lot more for quality, there is a place always open for people like her and it is called [fastfood]! Thanks for keeping the tradition. We'll be there on February 14, 2003!!!

MY REVIEW: Very organized. Friendly and prompt staff. Food - We were with a company party so we did't get to order from the menu, but the food was okay. Entertainment - very good magicians, comparable to Las Vegas acts. The atmosphere is very nice and quite unusual.

Overall we had a very nice time and we will go back. Seemingly everyone enjoyed themselves. No complaints here! We were there for approx. 4 hours.

There are a lot of added surprises to the evening....Photograph when you arrive, Up-Close Magicians, Palm Readers, Fortune Tellers.....It was fun!

MY REVIEW: The food was okay, wait staff was very prompt, the decor was really elaborate, the shows were medicore at best. The whole thing was definately not worth the money, almost $100.00 for 2 people with a coupon. They are really cheap, you have to pay for refills on soft drinks, even during your meal and you must valet park, all activities beside the shows also cost like fortune telling. We will never go back and recommend that you spend your money else where.
