MY REVIEW: I have been going here since I was a kid, and my dad was the one who brought me after going many years himself (he worked close by). I have taken my husband and friends who all feel the same way. It's our favorite BBQ in Houston. The staff is friendly, the portions are huge (my husband and I split a plate and still have leftovers) and the price is right. I don't know why there was a complaint about the meat not having a smoky taste...I certainly think it does.

My favorite part is that the brisket is nice and lean - not with a bunch of gristle and fat. I love the potato salad, and I like the beans too. The only thing I don't like is the cheese they use on the baked potatoes, so I just don't get 'em! Visit this place and you won't be sorry!!!

MY REVIEW: I've grown up eating Beef-n-Bun. They have the best BBQ in Houston! I love to sit inside because they always have the best country music playing. The sliced beef poboy is my favorite, although its hard to beat the loaded baked potato with chopped beef. Everything is to die for! My family has been coming to Beef-n-Bun for years, ever since my parents were in high school. I highly recommend this place for some good old fashion BBQ and a friendly staff!

MY REVIEW: To address ralph and T. Scott's issues, the brisket as well as all the meats are slow cooked (13 hours for the brisket) over hickory wood and never heated, cooked, or re-heated in an oven. They do not use a rub on the brisket or the ribs...here you get meat that tastes like meat, with a hint of the smoke. I'm sure if you asked...they would let you look at the pit...I have.

MY REVIEW: I have to agree with some of T. Scott's review. This is NOT what I would call real Bar-BQ. Like T. Scott indicated it tasted like the meat was cooked in an electric cooker. It had virtually no smoke taste. I had a beef poor boy basket and even though it didn't taste like Bar BQ, I LIKED IT VERY MUCH. It was very filling and the FRIES WERE GREAT - skin on style and a lot of them. I WILL be back because I really liked the sandwich and fries even though this is not what I consider real Texas Bar BQ. To me it was like a great (and huge) hot roast beef poor boy with a huge side of great fries. The sauce was thin and didn't have a lot of flavor but it didn't take away from the meat which was a good thing.

I think Bar BQ and Bar BQ sauce make up the food category most open to each person't opinion. I've eaten in Bar BQ places all over Texas and in Memphis. They varied all over the map in reguards to the taste of the meat and the sauce. Obviously I liked some better than others. The worst Bar BQ I ever ate was in Texas (3 different small town places that were absolutely horrible by virtually anyone's standards). I also don't care too much for those famous dry ribs in Memphis but thousands of people think they were sent from Above.

MY REVIEW: I can remember going to Beef N Bun after a long day at Madison High School in the 80's. This place has been around for a long time and nothing has changed. Which is a good thing. The po-boy baskets are the best in town (add cheese to the entire basket!). The prices are great too! This is a place where the entire family can eat without breaking the bank. For a while there, after the cook died, the brisket was not at it's best, but it seems as if someone found the old recipe and is using it. I now live in Katy but always go back there when I visit my family. We have also had them cook briskets and chickens for some of our family functions.

If you live in the area and have not had a chance to try them, do so. You will not be disappointed!

The ambiance is fine. Don't change a thing. They still play country music and the decor old but don't change a thing! If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!

MY REVIEW: I used to eat regularly at the Fuqua location from 1996 until 2000. It was good bar-b-que. Beans and potato salad was also servicable. Their chopped beef sandwiches were really good and they had a surprisingly good chicken fried steak. The price was right and the portions were large. It was the kind of place I would drive a few miles out of my way to visit. However, I changed to a job that took me over 20 miles away from that location, so I quit going.

I was very pleasantly surprised to recently see that there was a location on Long Point, and even more so to see the almost unanimous positive reviews. However, I was very disappointed. The only good news is that the portions were extremely large and the price was low compared to what you would pay at most places. I ordered a ribs and brisket combo plate with beans and potato salad. The beans were good and the potato salad was average at best, but that is not why I visited there. The ribs were very fatty, but that just happens and I don't let that get in the way. The surface of the ribs appeared baked, but not smoked or prepped with a dry rub. There was no smoke ring, nor was there any smoke flavor to them. Likewise, the brisket was tender and reasonably moist, but there was only a trace of a smoke ring and there was no smoky flavor. The flavor and appearance was what I would expect to get by simply slow baking it in an electric oven!

I tried to find a way to forgive the poor meat. It was 12:30PM, so I would expect them to have an adequate supply of meat for the lunch crowd, especially since there was no sign of a big rush. For that reason, the poor quality cannot be written off to rushing meat because they short. If it was a matter of getting dry brisket or ribs, I would give them another shot since that can happen on a bad day, but that wasn't the case. The lack of a smoke ring and no smoke flavor indicates to me that at best, they only smoke it for a brief period and finish it off in an oven. That is a sign of shortcutting and does not just happen on a bad day, so I will not go back.

Heck, I even left a bunch of meat on the plate when I left and I NEVER do that!

MY REVIEW: (Very Strong)Strong Points-Brisket, Ribs, Baked Potato

Weak Points-beans, potato salad

Been going here for over 25 years. Always consistent and friendly. The dining room could use a complete make-over but what the heck it might raise the prices.

MY REVIEW: Ok, so they don't know our names but they do recognize our faces when we walk thru the door. This is the BEST bbq place around...from the bbq sauce to the Texas toast to the brisket to the loaded baked potatoes. The old saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" certainly applies here. We've been eating here ever since I can remember (20+ years) and I don't think one thing has changed. Same employees who are always friendly...same decor...same awesome food. They have great portions and great prices. My only complaint is that there's no location on north or west side of town! A MUST EAT!

MY REVIEW: I doubt that anyone there really knows my name but we have used these people for years for all our special occassions, e.g. graduations, weddings, etc. We first ran across them at a wedding dinner where we were guests. We tried them ourselves the next time we needed food for a celebration. They are unbelieveably wonderful. We buy the cheapest brisket we can find on sell, freeze it until a couple days before we need it, take it down there, they smoke it, trim it, slice it - we take it home and serve it and it always comes out restaurant quality. Prices are very reasonable, they're very pleasant to deal with and once you try them you'll be a customer for life. The only criticism I have is that I do not buy their BBQ sauce as it tends to be a bit expensive. Otherwise, you cannot beat these people!

MY REVIEW: You might have trouble finding this place, because it's a hole in the wall of a seedy strip mall, wedged next to an all-day American/Chinese/Mexican buffet, and the sign out front just says "B-B-Q." I was a little worried walking up.

I was even more worried walking in. Plan to get your order to go, because the decor is somewhere between non-existent and regrettable, and the dining room has all the charm of a prison cafeteria.

But don't be fooled by appearances-- the grub is good and the price is right. A 2-meat plate with 2 sides can be had for $6.60, chicken for $5.50, a meat basket with fries for $4.25, or a sandwich for just $3.25. You can even get a combo meat basket with 4 meats and fries for $4.25. Don't ask me how. The brisket and links were tasty, not too lean and not too fatty with a nice flavor. It's piled high and smothered in a thin spicy-vinegary sauce, with a slab of good ol' greasy Texas toast on the side. The traditional sides are better left in the kitchen-- the potato salad and cole slaw looked like they came out of a 5-gallon bucket and tasted worse. Go for fries instead.

The staff is also very nice-- my SO ordered pork instead of links by mistake, and the cook brought him a free plate loaded with links even though it wasn't his mistake. (PS: the pork was OK, but what Houstonian wants pork BBQ?!)

MY REVIEW: GREAT MEAT! Huge quantities and low price. Just ask for the "beef basket." It's normally a special. Lots of fries, lots of meat on a bun and a huge coke for about $5. Can't be beat! The lunch plate is great too. Includes a couple of sides, potato salad (favorite), ranch beans (favorite), or cole slaw. Oh, huge baked potatoes too! I've been going here for about 15 years. The guy slicing the brisket has been doing it there for over 30.

MY REVIEW: Inexpensive. Sandwiches are piled high with meat. The best french fries in the world. Hand cut and a monstrous portion. They pour the sauce on the meat in the bun while sitting atop the french fries. The sauce is thin so it soaks into the fries. Sandwich basket is only $3.80. A satisfying treat.
