MY REVIEW: My wife and I are new to Houston and this cafe was recommended very soon upon our arrival. The food and service were both wonderful. They have a very nice area for outside dining and the atmosphere is casual and eclectic. Be warned, the portions, especially the sandwiches, are very large. Also, they do make all natural fruit smoothies that are wonderful and there are also several good vegetarian options. We will be back.

MY REVIEW: This is a place I had always heard good things about but never had the occasion to visit. My wife and I met my daughter for lunch. We were warmly greeted and the wait staff was courteous and attentive for the entire time we were there.
My wife had the portobello mushroom fajitas, my daughter the fish tacos and I had the grilled mahi-mahi sandwich. All three dishes were delicious and were generous portions. The ambiance is comfortable and casual. The only weak point foe our visit was the parking was a little tight but that speaks well to the popularity of the place. We are looking forward to our next visit.

MY REVIEW: I have not been there since they moved from Shepard Dr. i have been going there since the 70's . the smoothies are still great and the food was excellent and I emphasize excellent I don't know why they get bad reviews the service was great less than 20 min. at noon . I had the chicken enchiladas Verde and Diane had the talupia . she said it was very very good ! The atmosphere was pleasing. The parking was OK for being a little after noon on Mon. Bon apatite

MY REVIEW: My husband and I decided to try this place after hearing people rave about it. We had a terrible experience. After ordering (a sandwich and a quesadilla), we waited AN HOUR for our food. The two tables around us waited just as long, although they seemed to have more complicated orders. Not once during that entire hour did our server come by to explain that there would be a delay, refill drinks, etc. When the table next to us got their food, the server took off fast and the customers practically had to chase him down to ask him for refills on their drinks. The food was really salty. We will not be back.

MY REVIEW: Wonderful selection of food. I love their fish tacos and portebello mushroom fajita. They serve brunch on Sunday, which is always good for me. The only one thing I have to complain about is tis place is too popular. I always have to wait every time I go there, so I strongly suggest to go there early or late.

MY REVIEW: This is a great place for outdoor dining!!! Very relaxed, casual (jeans, t-shirt, sandals) atmosphere. Wood deck, lined with colorful lights, huge oak trees covering the entire patio, as I said before, VERY CASUAL!!! We started with the Shrimp Rolls, they were scrumptious...I could have eaten the whole order on my own. For our main course, we shared the Fish Tacos and the Chicken Enchiladas Verde. Loved the Fish Tacos, 2 corn tortillas wrapped around blackened grilled fish, topped with shredded purple cabbage and a creamy sauce, very tasty!!! Chicken Enchiladas were good, no complaints, just not as good as the fish tacos.

MY REVIEW: After a co worker suggested, I went to Hobbit Cafe. Ordered the Shire sandwich. Waitstaff were friendly, the atmosphere was nice, but the poor sandwich had absolutely no flavour at all. Felt like munching on a bunch of fluffy tasteless bread, that's about it. The price was on the upper limit too, a premium price for a simple (and tasteless) sandwich. Will I go back? Will take some convincing.

MY REVIEW: The atmosphere is very quirky, and the staff is very friendly. However, I did not have a good experience with the food. I ordered "jerk chicken", and the dish is very plain and boring-tasted. The chicken is extremely dry, and the sauce lacks flavours. The rice is overcooked and dry also. I would come here again but absolutely not order that dish.

MY REVIEW: Went today after a friend told of fantastic food and relaxing atmosphere. He hit the Nail Directly on the Head. Great little spot to have lunch or dinner. I Will return to try more hobbit fare!

MY REVIEW: This past month I have visited the Hobbitt Cafe several times. The reason I have chosen to go back again and again is because the food is wonderful, the portions generous, service excellent and an extremely comfortable atmosphere.
The first time I went I had the "Chicken Enchiladas Verdes", they were out of this world. The sauce was made with tomatillo, the chicken was fantastic, it was served with a generous portion of black beans and rice.
The appetizers are great as well, the nachos are a must, and if you want, you could order extra cheese or guacamole and pico de gallo. This last one is made fresh and has a wonderful cilantro taste. The shrimp eggrolls are absolutely out of this world as well.
As far as sandwiches are concerned, they are all extremely generous in portion and they have a wide variety to choose from, turkey, chicken, tuna salad, mahi-mahi and tuna cooked to order, all with an assortment of fresh greens. Hamburgers are terrific too! 100% Angus beef, with a wild variety of toppings.
Needless to say, I shall continue going for dinner there because I am always pleasantly surprised when I try new items to eat. The wait staff is really friendly ,quick and casual which is refreshing in itself.

MY REVIEW: WOW!!! I was totally blown away by this place. The food was simply amazing and CHEAP! The portions are huge, a great beverage selection, friendly staff, and there is something for everyone on the menu. My boyfriend's omelette was the biggest I've ever seen and the breakfast potatoes are a gift from the gods. The buffalo burger was juicy, perfectly cooked, and enough for two meals. I also had the gazpacho, which was unlike any that I've ever had...different, but great! I will definitely be back very soon and very often. I will be driving in from Sugar Land, but I know it will be well worth it. Glad we finally tried it :)

MY REVIEW: We have been eating here for about 4 years and we love it. Great vegitarian fare and a laid back hippie atmosphere on a big patio. Favorites include the buffalo burger... black and blue style or w/ 3 inches of avacado. Fries are yummy and crisp!

MY REVIEW: I first went after a friend from Rice U. recommended it. We almost passed it that first time. Look for the blue fish if you're coming from Richmond. Yeah, the parking lot needs improvement, like more space. Even the restaurant itself is crowded. The first time we went, the service was horrible. Our waiter ignored us, so we had to flag down the guy that seated us. We've had two other mediocre servers, and one good one. Yet we keep going back. The food is great...for the most part. The fruit salad is delicious. Our favorite. I love the avocado burger and the buffalo burger. I tried the Smaug's Delight. It was good, but not enough so I'd try it again. It was even messier than the burger. Portions are huge, except for the brown rice that I order with my burger. I would not recommend the enchiladas. We tried the carrot cake once. I liked it, my mom didn't.

MY REVIEW: I recently re-visited the favorite haunt of my youth of the 1970's. It was a delight! The waitstaff was very attentive and informative. I had my old favorite of a Gandalf Sandwich and a Mithril Mix Smoothie, both heavenly and could not tell them from the delights of my youth. I did order the "classic" version with the thicker bread option that is like what I recalled.
I would not go if on a rushed lunch break, it defeats the whole aura of Hobbitdom. Go when you have a bit of time to enjoy the delicious and delectible food. Oh, yes, plan on eating most sandwiches with a knife and fork, not in your hands...they are simply too thick and large for hands. And yes the avocado dishes are for the most ardent of avocado lovers, not for the "nibblers'. Remember the character of Hobbits and their attitudes toward food and enjoyment- you will have a clue as to what to expect.

MY REVIEW: This place is AMAZING. We have been going here for the last 5 years, and it never disappoints. The food is always very healthy and delicious. The beer selection, though sparse, is quality, and the staff is fantastic. On a beautiful day, it is the place to go. The *only* complaint is that the portions are HUGE, but that's probably not a problem for most ;) For the money, it is easily the best "veggie/health" deal in Houston.

MY REVIEW: We make a trip to the Hobbit about twice a month or so. It never, ever disappoints. I have always been pleased with the service. Wait staff is always courteous and attentive. I love the fact that the patio is located away from the main road, so you don't have to stare at traffic while eating. I love the decor, makes for interesting conversation starters. And the food is always fresh and delicious. Highlights on the menu are the fish tacos, the salmon burger, and the St. Lucia. Yeah, the parking lot is a bit bumpy, but we've never had trouble finding a spot. One of the best restaurants I've visited since moving to Houston a year ago.

MY REVIEW: The Greenway Plaza lunch bunch (9 of us this time!) decided to take the short drive up Richmond to check out the Hobbit. Only weak point (and this has nada to do with the food) is the parking lot. Holy mackeral (and I do mean holey)! Some may say it adds to the charm. Anyway all were quite pleased with their selections. The day's special wild salmon burger made a great meal for yours truly. The quesadillas were served in a very generous portion, as was the Slim (?) chicken salad sandwich. All the regular items have names per JRR Tolkien's famous characters if for some reason the name Hobbit Cafe doesn't strike a chord with you. The service was a little lackadaisical but it made for some nice conversation whilst we waited. All in all I give the Hobbit Cafe a thumbs up for a nice lunch. It's on our repeat list now!

MY REVIEW: Just found the place again, I used to live in it when it was on Shepard & West Gray. Fav sandwich was the Fatty Lumpkin (tuna) drove from Cypress to see if it was still the same. Still very LARGE and very GOOD, got it to go can't commit on waite staff. They still have the same problem they had on Shepard, PARKING, will stop again when I am in the area (saturdays only parking is better.

MY REVIEW: I love the outdoor seating and the vegitarian selections! Recently it has been extremely crowded during brunch times on the weekends which takes away from the relaxed atmosphere... we prefer the "no wait week night" w/ the regular hippie clientel.

MY REVIEW: The Hobbit Cafe used to be better, but my last few experiences there have convinced me not to go back. Hobbit's strong points are: good smoothies, especially Mithril Mix(I think that's what it's called). However, the last time I ordered one there, it wasn't cold enough. There is a generous selection of veggie dishes. The weak Points are: expensive, bland, cold food, and rude, innattentive servers who rush you through your dinner if you are there past 9 p.m.
Mojo is right. If you want better veggie dishes, go to B*aba Yega.

MY REVIEW: Strong points: I like the Hobbit Cafe because of their wide variety of vegetarian options, which isn't that easy to find in Houston! Their sandwiches are tasty, their fries are good, and I love their carrot cake. Weak points: I know that it's a good thing that their sandwiches have so much inside of them - but seriously, they are just so stuffed that they fall apart the instant you try and pick them up and it no longer becomes a sandwich. I really would rather them either use sturdier bread, or just make a smaller, cheaper sandwich. The Hobbit Cafe taught me that there it *is* actually possible to have too much avocado. Also, I wish that they would somehow season their vegetable sandwiches a bit better, since they're on the bland side - I generally have to pour on salt, pepper, and/or mayo. I'm also not really that satisfied with the service - it's usually fairly slow, and rather disinterested. Don't come here if you're on a one-hour lunch break, because you won't make it back in time! Overall: I'll come back, but it's not really a top pick for me. For great veggie sandwiches, check out B*ba Yega instead.

MY REVIEW: Really great little restaurant. Black bean nachos are wonderful. The buffalo burger is great. The vegetarian dishes are super. HOWEVER, stay away from the spinach and mushroom enchiladas. The "mole" sauce is rather sweet and the veggies bland. I thought maybe it was a one time thing but a friend ordered the same dish a week later and it was just as horrid.

MY REVIEW: I read the review about the black bean burger...it was worth the drive. It was just black beans and rice molded into a patty chape, but it didnt break apart. I also ordered sides of black beans & rice but it was tasty. The bread was excellent. The service was great (I had a to go order) and friendly... definitely a place to make a secod trip. lots of charactr and ambience. the only downside was that Frodo wasnt in sight..maybe he was off that day.

MY REVIEW: I took my dinner club Eight Friends Out to the Hobbit Cafe for brunch, not really knowing what to expect. They treated us like kings and queens, and the food selections were widely varied. The food was fresh and flavorful, as well as plentiful. Many club members took home parts of their meal. We started with fresh fruit and then had a choice of Salmon Benedict, Southwest Buffalo Wrap (huge), Migas, Fajitas, or various omelettes and pancakes. I loved the ginger pancakes--not too sweet. (I am a pancake fan who does not like her pancakes to taste like dessert.) The desserts, however! Wow! The carrot cake and chocolate mousee cake would feed an army! I had a giant piece of pumpkin pie, which tasted just like my Mom would make, fresh whipped cream and all. Now THAT is good! They also served mimosas made with fresh squeezed oranged juice. We will definitely go back!
