MY REVIEW: I've only been to the location on kirby, however I absolutely love HOP. The Pies are amazing and the servers are very friendly. I live in the pasadena area but frequently drive out to HOP with friends just because i'd prefer to eat there than any other 24 hour establishment around.

MY REVIEW: I've been eating at HOP for too many years to mention, at both locations. My average is 4 times a week, sometimes more. I have loved it because it is fast, reasonably priced, comfortable, and the service is excellent. But lately, things have been changing. There must be new managers, because the quality of the food has been heading downhill fast. The steaks they serve are from a new source, and they are mostly fat and gristle. Generally the food on Kirby is better than on Westheimer, and the the last time I had the hangover omlette on Westheimer it was flat, cooling, and pretty much tasteless. The french fries are consistently underdone, and the last time I had the tuna melt, the toast was burned. I don't know what's going on, but it's no surprise to me I don't have to wait for seating anynmore. HOP has been my home away from home, and I'm so disappointed with its decline I could cry.

MY REVIEW: Have been aware of HOP for years but never eaten there. I was driving by and needed lunch so I stopped. I had the chicken-fried steak. It was very good though a formed steak. Came with green beans and potatoes. Didn't like the green beans, tasteless. There was an alterative to the beans, I think rice. Whatever it was should have gotten. Only choice of potatoes was French-fried, tater tots or (?) home fries. I would have expected mashed but not a choice. The service was fast and friendly. I would go back for chicken-fried steak again or may be try some other items.
I noticed a sign on table about $2.50 minimum. I guess you don't want to go in there and just have a coffee or soda pop.

MY REVIEW: Finally something new at the House of Pies! They're now making 4" pies for takeout. For now they're only doing the pecan pie in this small size but they say they may extend it to some of their other pies. I think the smaller pecan pies actually taste better than the regular ones. It may be the proportion of crust to filling or the fact that the pecans are chopped instead of halves. They are definitely easier to cut or fork.
I no longer have to feel guilty about taking a whole pie home and then eating or not eating all of it. Another good thing is these mini pies are only $2.75. I think I'm in trouble when they start making some of their others in that size.

MY REVIEW: I did not grow up in Houston so was totally unfamiliar with H.O.P., and by the looks of it, it didn't look like a place that had good food. But I had read a good review in the magazine Texas Highways so we stopped for pie and coffee. The recommended choice was Bayou Goo so my husband got that, and trying to eat more fruit, I inquired about their fruit pies. None were made with fresh fruit today (due to it being too early in the season) except for Strawberry so I got that. Already regretting it, I sampled my husband's Bayou Goo first. It was out of this world good! Good, good, good! Mine was a big heaping of whole strawberries tossed in a glaze with whipped topping on an already cooked pie shell. I didn't expect it to be so good but it was really quite good. The good taste was due to quality strawberries. I buy a lot of strawberries from the grocery store and some are good, many or not. Every single one of these was sweet, perfectly ripe. So, I got a delicious slice of pie and a big serving of vitamin C and antioxidents to boot.

MY REVIEW: My family went to another restaurant on a Friday night and received HORRIBLE service, so to turn things around I decided to treat them to a special dessert outing. It was @ 9 p.m. on a Friday night and the service was exceptional! We each had dessert and drinks. My fiance (who prefers to eat in) actually loved the dessert and coffee. The kids had a blast with the whipped creme filled cups floating as they added the hot chocolate. And I just had to try the Bayou Goo, which was wonderful. The only downside to the place is the size; rather than think of it as small, think cozy.

MY REVIEW: I hate the $2.50 an hour charge just for sitting there. The should only charge if its fully occupied or during peak hours. Restaurant is making it impossible to take co worker or a friend there.

MY REVIEW: House of Pies is a struggling antique gasping for air trying to wring unearned money out of the remaining patrons who do visit instead of changing to fit the needs of the marketplace.
I WAS a customer of both Westheimer and Kirby locations for 30 years. However, my experience at the Westheimer location yesterday was the nail in the coffin. I will mention as a relevant fact that at times I have taken ALL of my MEALS at House of Pies. They now have a policy that they POST as minimum $2.50 per person per hour charge. But the interpretation and enforcement of this rule has changed with no notice. This policy used to be only during peak periods( back inthe day when the place was standing room only after the bars closed....waaay back when.... Can you say Disco era?), not when the place was virtually empty, AND a total charge simply had to cover the amount. So long as the total tab covered an average of $2.50 per person per hour, you were good.
Well, ok, my daughter and I had stopped by just for a quick inexpensive cup of coffee,( considered going to Starbucks for good coffee...next time we will) but we decided to stay and just share a piece of pie to make a total $5.00 tab to cover the requirement. Of course we would have tipped generously to compensate the waitress for her time.
Well, they tacked on a $2.50 additional charge. It seems that a $5.00 tab was not enough, even in the empty restaurant. They now consider that EACH person needs to order separate menu items and drinks. So, our intended brief stop for a cuppa ended up costing $7.00, if they had charged for both cups of coffee it would have been $8 ( for some reason we were not charged for one cup of coffee- even though I pointed it out to both waitress and the old male cashier. I am sorry, House of Pies, $7-8 plus tax and tip, for a quick cup of coffee is not acceptable.
The new policy is not stated clearly enough. I want to know BEFORE I order clearly about "gotcha" clauses like this. They clearly do not want the occasional customer to drop in for a quick cup of coffee in the middle of errands, or for women (or others who for diet of health reasons) who wish to SHARE an order.
Oh, also, the waitress just left the building after placing the pie on our table...we kept looking for her....but she was no where to be found.....we finally asked another waitress for assistance regarding the charges, she just took it straight to a male worker who came over and just told us that it was the owners policy and told us "how THEY see it". So I feel compelled to tell all of HOUSTON how I see it.

MY REVIEW: We have been to house of pies on many, MANY occasions. They have a good variety of breakfast foods at a very reasonable price. The waitstaff is full on professional - the kind of waitress who writes things down and gets every thing right every time. They always think ahead (offer you condiments, refills, etc) before you even realized you needed something.
The food is good and solid - if less than original. I also have to give them credit - food comes fast!
There are a few downsides though. There is always a wait for a non-smoking table. This is one of those restaurants that "features" a non-smoking section (about 75% of the restaurant is smoking, and frankly, the patrons do smoke). No beef against those who want to smoke, but it's a relatively small restaurant, and their non-smoking section can get a little smokey.
We WILL keep going back. I just wish that the owners would realize they have a good thing going... they should bulldoze the place, and rebuild with double the seating. We'd go there every weekend if it weren't for the smokey wait!

MY REVIEW: I've been going to House of Pies since 1982. While many of you may remember what it was like when the bars let out....things have changed. The service last week was not friendly, it was very hot inside due to no A/C and the pie was not like it was in the past. The crust was not flaky and the filling tasted canned. When I asked if the A/C was broken, the hostess was rude and got an attitude. I hate to see what was a great place for late night pie go down the drain...but, I'll go to the D*ot from now on.

MY REVIEW: I’m really not one to actually fill out these "Reviews" on the site but this has been my place of refuge for a while and i won’t have the likes of some of those who did like it bad mouthing the place. I have been visiting the Kirby location for some years now driving sometimes from Texas City, where i once lived, just to scarf down my share of cottage fries. Things to have if i may say are the patty melt, Philly or the Acapulco breakfast. I’ve never gone wrong with any of them and in the wee hours that i have found myself within its walls i have always enjoyed the staff (from the past GILBERT) and those that wait the tables now. The deserts without a doubt you will never go wrong with so give it a shot.

MY REVIEW: This location has decent food (much like I-H*OP, or D*NNYS), and great pies. Just like all House of Pies, though, they have a limited seating arrangement for handicap individuals. They have only one handicap table in the resteraunt, and it is in the non-smoking section (even though the smoking section is as large, or larger), all of the rest of the tables are booths (no chairs). The ailes are too small for one to sit at the end of the table. I RARELY go to this location due to it being very uncomfortable for me.
On the plus side, the staff will usually be as accomidating as possible.

MY REVIEW: The breakfast special at the westheimer location is the best in town. The pies are fantastic. Service is always good. Lunch and Late night dining needs total improvement. I will just stick with the breakfast items and the cakes and pies...you can't go wrong...

MY REVIEW: I have always enjoyed the nostalgic value of a restaurant that has managed to stay in business (and in the same location) for at least 25 years. I will admit that the place is not your modern "410 Diner" or "House of Pancakes" franchise (Thank you Lord for diversity) but you can still get a good meal at a low cost. NO ONE in Texas can come close to the pies on hand (EVERYDAY I might add). It is a very well worn location that has a lot of history and hopefully will be around for another couple of decades before it is bought out and destroyed by a corporate nightmare like "Ch*ili's" or another "Ch*uy's".

MY REVIEW: Based on a recommendation, I tried this place for lunch one weekday afternoon. I was disappointed by their quality of the food. I ordered the chicken fingers and they were greasy and dry. The vegetable sides looked and tasted as if they were canned and reheated. The portions were generous, however I didn't care for how it tasted enough to eat it for a second meal. The tables and floors had not been adequately cleaned between patrons, and I question what the kitchen looked like if the didn't take care of the front. Service was super slow despite the fact there were only a few other tables there. I would return only to try their famous pies.

MY REVIEW: If you are a diabetic, don't bother going to the House of Pies. I've always enjoyed a late night visit to this restaurant...until recently. I always enjoyed their sugar free apple pie, but now, for some reason, they refuse to stock anything but the awful sugar free cherry pie. Every time in the last three months that I've visited -- including tonight -- they have been sold out of one of the only two sugar free pies on their menu. When I ask about it, they are clearly unconcerned. So my advice: If you are diabetic, steer clear of this establishment. They don't want your business or the business of your family members. Maybe when House of Pies starts losing our business, they will decide we're worth taking notice of

MY REVIEW: Pies aside, really underwhelmed here. Although portions and food quality were slightly better than (another 24 hr. restaurant) service was a bit eccentric and off putting. Also dimly lit and stale cigarette smoke hung in the air. I have found better.

MY REVIEW: An off-the-menu find - Strawberry Cream Cheese pie. It is a graham craker crust filled with cream cheese (not cheese cake), topped with fresh whole stawberries and decorated with whipped cream. It is fantastic!! You really should try it.
It is not on the printed menu because it is available only at the Westheimer location.

MY REVIEW: Well, it is that time of year again. Time to order my Thanksgiving pies from House of Pies. This year I am going for the usual pumpkin (a must) and coconut custard (for a change). Their pies are consistantly good and even when I have forgotten to order them in advance, they have been able to supply what I need to take home to the family. There are lots to choose from and I highly recommend them.
