Felix Mexican Restaurant (CLOSED)
| | 904 Westheimer Rd
| Houston TX | | | |
MY REVIEW: Felix was among the first places to introduce Mexican-style food to Anglos way back when. Back then, your so-called "bland" food was an adventurous treat and a whole new experience for them. This place is popular precisely BECAUSE it still provides that same experience.
I swear, some of you people would go to a sushi restaurant, then complain when they served you raw fish! If you're not going to make even the slightest effort to understand what you're eating, PLEASE go to Taco C*abana and get the food you deserve.

MY REVIEW: I have to agree with the previous reviewer. This place staying in business this long astounds me. I would have rather had a frozen ElC*harrito dinner from the grocery store. The food was so bland-I dont like that much spice & for me to say something is bland-means exactly that! Whats with that weird salsa they serve? It was like it had beef broth or canned tomato soup in it-very odd! We ordered chili con queso(which I am now glad I didnt get) but never received it, it was altogether a weird experience. The prices were high for such mediocre food, the cashier was very nice! The waitress was old & a bit odd, but basically friendly. It was a very odd experience. The taco was good-like an old school homemade taco. But good. The beans-not refried more like charro-had absolutely no taste & were actually not finished cooking-they were a bit al dente. The tea wasnt good. The mexican gravy that covered the teeny, tiny tamale had no flavor whatsoever-like I said the frozen mexican dinners at the grocery store were better than this & one twentieth of the price. I am not even convinved that the tortillas were homemade-they tasted like store bought. I felt like I had gone back in time to 1959 & the 1959 June Cleaver version of mexican food. They definitely have nothing on the other mexican places in town-I will stick with my favorite places & not go back here again. But at least I did give them a try.

MY REVIEW: I work in the Montrose area at a little software company. My coworker and long-time friend and I decided after many an evasion to finally give 'ole Felix a day in court. We voted unanimously: GUILTY
"Guilty? Guilty of what?" you may ask. Well, for starters, guilty of serving me their "chile con queso." It was as if they had collected the cheese inside of 50 TV dinner enchiladas and scooped it into a bowl. And then poured orange grease on top of it. And then served it to me.
GUILTY Guilty of refilling my tea after one drink. Guilty of serving me spaghettio sauce with onions in it and calling it "salsa". Guilty of giving me the option to substitute my rice for spaghetti. Let me repeat that. The menu says "served with refried beans and your choice of Spanish rice or spaghetti". Huh?
GUILTY And to top it all off, guilty of charging me for the experience. The bowl of TV dinner powdered cheese collected in a grease trap that I mentioned earlier was $6.95 for the small order. That's more than Cafe Adobe. The large was $9.95!!! Seriously! Talk about real cajones! All in all not bad for the very worst restaurant I've ever eaten at in my entire life.
Next time I'm going to Pancho's.

MY REVIEW: I have been eating here since i was child (about 20 years). The queso is my favorite in the city, as well as the enchiladas and mexican spaghetti. I even have had the low-fat enchiladas and taco salad, and they are both great. Everyone is so nice there, and not stuffy like other mexican restaurants.

MY REVIEW: Stopped in for Margaritas & queso with a friend.
The first sign things were bad was when they brought out the salsa for the chips. It was more like onions in tomato sauce. Very bland and almost no flavor.
We ordered *chili* con queso.. we got queso with a layer of grease on top so thick you could cut it with a knife. Where were the chillis?? At least the margaritas were decent, it's pretty hard to mess them up when they have a machine making them.
I will definitely never eat here again and warn everyone to stay away. We would have done better to go to the Taco C*abana across the street, but they didn't have margaritas..

MY REVIEW: I grew up eating at the Felix's in Beaumont with my parents religiously, at least once a month. Their chili con queso is unique -- yes, greasy -- but so mouth watering good! The cheese enchiladas are excellent, especially with a smattering of the green jalapeno sauce on the tables. This is not the Tex-Mex you can get anywhere -- that's why it's so wonderful. I am so happy that when my craving kicks in and I need to reminisce I can still find my favorite Mexican food a short two hours away.

MY REVIEW: I picked this place for my birthday because of the raves I heard from a friend. We went on a Sat night at 7:30 and were the only ones in the place. I was very disappointed. The cueso I heard was the best came out with a layer of grease and was cold. Everything was cold which may be why it did not taste good. I am sorry because it was very disappointing but I will not go back.

MY REVIEW: I am 53 years old and I have been goint to Felix since I was a very young little girl. My Grandmother Mrs. Mercardo was very good friends with the owners. We call the owner Mrs. Felix and not her real last name. My dady would buy all of us the largest "chili con queso" for Christmas every year. That was my dad's favorite dish. EVERYTHING is very good at Felix. We first started going to Felix at the corner of Grant & Westheimer, then we started going to the one on Kirby and Bissonet. We were really sad when they closed those 2 Restaurants down. Maybe one day they can open another one in the Village again.
I just wanted everyone to know that there is ONLY ONE MEXICAN RESTAURANT IN HOUSTON TEXAS THAT IS WORTH GOING TO AND THAT IS "FELIX MEXICAN RESTAURANT" ON WESTHEIMER. You're not eating Mexican food if you go to another Mexican Restaurant. Take my word. FELIX MEXICAN RESTAURANT IS THE BEST.
Felix keep up the good work. My whole family and friends that I have taking to Felix just love Felix also. Felix, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
A very satisfy customer.

MY REVIEW: their food tastes different from any Tex-Mex I've ever had. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, but in the case of their queso, you will never experience better. I started eating at Felix as a kid in Beaumont in the 50's. Moved to Liberty and returned to Beaumont mid 60's for college where i resumed my love affair with the QUESO. Don't get to Westheimer location too often because I reside in Galveston Co., but the trip is always worth it.

MY REVIEW: I was a little bit disappointed after all the glowing reviews - I think sentimentality may be coloring many of them. But it was pretty good retro tex mex. Not like new style tex mex fusion, we're talking your basic bean and cheese joint here. And definitely the all time summer special dinner is the way to go! After reading prior reviews, I got that and was the happiest person at the table. Margaritas are tasty. Biggest upside - excellent service. We had several folks working together to make sure we had everything we needed, which is a rare deal in a family style mexican restaurant like this one. Also the decor is unique, very kitschy and old-montrose.

MY REVIEW: I was so very relieved to hear that the family had decided to keep the doors open and try it again. I really enjoy Felix - their chile con queso is the best! Their food is not fancy, and is probably not "authentic", but it does represent the kind of good old Tex-Mex food that is tasty and filling. The building has a certain ambiance to it, and the staff is friendly, courteous, and professional. Since Felix is a small operation, the staff knows most of their regular customers by name. My regular waiter is Polo, and in my opinion he is the greatest! He is always very attentive, prompt, and courteous. It is the type of old fashioned service provided by the employees at Felix that makes for their loyal and longtime customers. If you are looking for a good meal at a reasonable price then Felix is the place!

MY REVIEW: I have been going to Felix all my life over 45 years. This is my Mexican restaurant of choice. People either love it or hate it. All the years I have been going I have never had anything other than the all time special "summer dinner" If your looking for sizzling fajitas and margaritas go somewhere else. This place is a Houston tradition. For my money it can't be beat.

MY REVIEW: After reading the reviews I was very excited about trying this restaurant. Boy, was I disapointed. The food and service were terrible. I ordered the fajitas. when they came to my table I did not hear them sizzlinlin in a skillet because they came on a plate and were luke warm at best. The chicken had no seasoning whatsoever and the beef tasted aweful and was very tough. They are way over priced. Margaritas were okay. Our waiter never came to check on us after he gave us our food. And said nothing when I asked him for the check and still had a plate full of food left on my plate. Do not waste your time on this place.

MY REVIEW: I love this restaurant. Here is my review for the last time I visited Felix:
-Impeccible service- Tea refills were prompt, as were chips and salsa. The waitsataff at Felix is very professional and courteous. The waitstaff consists of older men who have been waiting tables for years and years. Their experience shows.
-Taste- Anything with cheese, whether it be the queso or cheese enchiladas, is a good bet. I thought the chili sauce on the enchiladas was the best I've had anywhere. Also enjoyed the finely-ground beef inside the crispy taco that accompanies the Felix All-Time Special. Great guacamole as well.
-Tradition- This place is a Tex-Mex institution. Mumerous articles line the walls in the dining room, along with pictures of Felix Sr. A menu from way-back-when recalls a time when chili con carne was a dime and whole jalapeno peppers appeared on the menu. Was glad to see that the Houston Press awarded Felix with "Best Retro Tex-Mex" for 2004. It is well-deserved.

MY REVIEW: Love Felix Chili con Queso and the special dinner for over 55 years. Was thrilled to see that they're staying open. My brothers and I will probably make a special trip (180 miles one way) to go there soon so we can get some good Felix food in case thay eventually close. Hope NOT! Love the Guacamole, too! Ah, the memories.

MY REVIEW: First of all, I would never make the claim this is "authentic" Mexican food, so don't even try to make that argument. It is what it is, and that is unique and exceptional.
Been going since my parents dragged us to the Beaumont location back in the '60's. Ate at all of the locations (anyone remember the one up on FM 1960?). The queso is as most rightly proclaim: unique, and the best. Only queso I know you can eat with a fork. For those wanting the recipe, just search the Internet and you'll find it. I tried it, it didn't work.
Best meal: All Time Special w/ cheese enchilada. Guac is amazing, taco is greasy and good, the tostada is heavenly. The enchilada (yes, the chili gravy makes it) is superb. Love the sauce they bring with the chips: basically sauteed onions with chili powder, I guess.
Let's all try to keep this place going. I'm going to suggest they publish a book of their recipes (kind of like L*uby's did) before it's too late, so those who care can keep the food going on their own.
If you haven't tried it yet, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. Some absolutely hate this place, but they're in the minority.

MY REVIEW: I had heard a rumor that they were closing so I went there to see if I could get their recipe for chili con queso. I love it and have tried to get this recipe for years. I believe that this Mexican food has been consistently good since I have been going there for over 40 yrs. I'm still trying to get the recipe for the chili con queso.

MY REVIEW: Yeah!, Yeah!, Yeah! - I had lunch at Felix's today and the manager said due to the overwhelming response to their closing notice, the Felix family has decided to stay open for business. They plan to bring back the linen table cloths and napkins and make another "go" of it. This is still one of the most consistent mexican restaurants around. The food still tastes the same as it did when Mrs. Felix used to greet and seat people. Tell your friends to support this Houston institution so they will be around for many years. I plan to go there at least several times a month. Introduce this restaurant to your children like our parents and grandparents did to us. The chili con queso and ground beef nachos are just the best.

MY REVIEW: I thought Saturday afternoon would be my last visit. Pleasant surprise ... Mr. Felix has decided to stay open after the amazing show of support by old-time customers (I've been going 40+ years). This info shared by waiter and confirmed by cashier. The food was fresh and delicious. Those who love it need to remember to visit more often to keep it open for many more years.

MY REVIEW: How sad to see this exceptional restaurant close it's doors. I enjoyed my visits to Felix because everything about the experience seemed authentic. From the homemade Mexican food all the way down to the wicker chairs at the table, I felt like a dinner guest at someone's home. If they tear this shrine down and replace it with a chain restaurant, all is not right in this world. I wish the owners and staff the best of luck in their future endeavors.

MY REVIEW: Historians tell me that Larry of L*arry's Mexican Restaurant in Richmond, TX and Leo of the former L*eo's Mexican Restaurant on So. Shepherd trained under Mr. Felix. If you have not noticed, there signs in front of their buildings are the same. L*eo's is gone, and now Felix's is leaving us. The only thing close to their food will be L*arry's in Richmond. However - Larry died several years ago, but - the family still operates the restaurant.
