MY REVIEW: We moved from Texas in 2001. We now live in Florida and cannot get any good BBQ. Recently we went back for a visit. We ate at Brown Sugar's 3 times while in Texas. The food was every bit as good as we remembered. We wish that we could find some good BBQ here. Kudos to Brown Sugar.

MY REVIEW: I have been visiting this location since it first opened many years ago, and I can assure you they will not be gone in six months!! They have always had outstanding service and the food has always been exceptional. The portions are very generous and the baked potatoes are huge with more than ample toppings. I frequently stop on my way home for lunch and pick up baked potatoes for my daughter and I to have for lunch. Neither of us finish them in one setting. They also have fantastic peach cobbler. Their prices are very reasonable and generally much less than what you find at some of the other larger establishments.

MY REVIEW: My entire family has been getting Brown Sugar's BBQ for my entire life (they were off of Kleckley for years before moving to this building a few years back). It's our favorite place for barbecue. I have small children now and we still get this at least 2-4 times a month. They have the BEST potato salad you can get anywhere! They have the best, most tender beef brisket. You have to order it "lean" if you want it that way. You can also order the ribs the way you want them.

I have had this barbecue from the Greens Rd location, and they are just about as good as the one we always get it from. Little do people know, they have been in business for several years as well, and will not be gone in "six months."

My family likes this barbecue so much that we have gotten it for special occasions like birthdays or when other family members come to town to visit. The sausage is the best sausage you can get at a restaurant and greatly surpasses other's like P*apa's, the old L*uther's, etc. One of our out-of-town guests even stopped here to take food home with her to San Antonio.

The baked potatoes are the BEST too! My kids also love the ham, turkey, and chicken. The chicken fried steaks are so good and BIG, and the fries are some of the best fries you could get from a place like this. The cole slaw, rice and beans and peach cobbler are also excellent!

For over 20 years, the BBQ sauce has never been "sticky goo." It looks like normal sauce, is slightly more watery than any jarred sauce (as all HOME-MADE sauces are), and tastes great.

I don't quite understand the other reviewers, but I really don't put much faith in reviewers that can't even spell the most simple words.

MY REVIEW: I've visited Brown Sugar's BBQ twice and each time I was very satisfied. The first time I had the loaded Baked Potato w/chopped beef on it and it was very good and on my second visit I had the Po boy Basket....still no complaints. Maybe they have changed cooks or management since the other reviews were posted but I was very satisfied and so were my co-workers.

MY REVIEW: I love barbeque, and I’ve eaten a lot in my lifetime. So when my wife found a coupon for Brown Sugar’s, I looked forward to trying it just because of the appealing sound of the name.

I don’t know how they do it, but these people have absolutely perfected the art of making meat and barbeque sauce that completely lacks any taste whatsoever. Except for a slight indistinguishable taste of some unidentifiable spice, the sauce was like water that had somehow been (credit to the cook) thickened to where it looked like some very light-brownish, sticky goo. This... substance (?) was poured over a sizable portion of alleged pork ribs that I think had been steamed to completely lock out any possible flavor, and then served at room temperature.

I have to say though that my wife’s “smoked turkey” was much better. It was at least ten or so degrees warmer than room temperature, and actually had a taste -- not smoked, but taste nevertheless. This “taste” though was compromised by our innocent lack of knowledge when we were ordering by saying “yes” when they asked her if she wanted sauce on it. They then poured that same very light-brownish, sticky goo all over her turkey. I have to admit, with the “sauce” on it, it looked somewhat like baked turkey with watered down giblet gravy on it. It did look rather appealing until she tasted it.

Well, my parents always told me not to complain unless I could also say something good. So I have to say, they did honor the coupon with no problem.

MY REVIEW: This is absolutely disgusting bbq!I ordered the turkey plate. the turkey was the consistency of that found in a tv dinner. it tasted like it had been microwaved, not barbecued. French fries were soggy and the beans had no flavor. Don't get me started on the sauce! tastes more like bad gravy! never again!

MY REVIEW: Strengths: Tender Brisket, Ice cold fountain drinks

Weak Points: Knats all over a the place. If you like insects in their natural environment, this is the place for you. You dont serve PINTO beans at a BBQ joint. You serve baked beans or Ranch style beans. The briket had no flavor at all. I have seen cleaner restrooms at the gas station. The ribs were dried out and burnt.

Ambiance: to dark and full of bugs.

I am writing this in mid Feb, in 6 mos they will be gone.

MY REVIEW: I used to visit 10+ years ago when lunching with coworkers. Brown Sugar's was never my favorite, but it was still pretty good BBQ. One of my coworkers really liked the sweet sauce they serve. That's what kept us coming back. I don't like the sauce here, so I guess it's strictly a matter of opinion on that count.

I visited today for the first time in ten years. I would have to say that I was favorably impressed by the quality of the brisket. Very lean, tender, and juicy. But I would prefer it to be smokier. Definitely above average on the brisket. I'd give it a 7 on a 1-10 scale, with 5 being average and 10 being a top of the line hill country establishment. I'd put G*oode Company at 8.5 or 9. I did not sample any other items.

If I wanted brisket and happened to be near Almeda Mall then I'd definitely stop in. I might even travel as much as 10 miles for the brisket.

MY REVIEW: I work near by and occasionally I'll go there for the chicken fried steak with fries. To look at it is fattening enough but went I don't care about calories and my health in general I dive in. It is not the best but it is definately good. Unbuckle the belt the day after.

MY REVIEW: I didn't even know Brown Sugar's had two locations, but I can remember over 10 years ago that this Brown Sugar's had some pretty decent BBQ. I don't know if they changed owners or management or what, but we went in a couple of months ago hungry for some BBQ'd pork ribs. When we got them, we thought they were beef ribs. They were so tough that you could hardly chew them off of the bone and had no smoke flavor or seasoning to speak of at all. Today (3/27), I had a powerful urge for a plain old chopped beef sandwich. So I thought and thought about where I could go. Unless I drive into Houston, Pasadena, or Clear Lake, there is no other "BBQ" place close to the Sagemont area other than Brown Sugar's and I thought to myself that no one can screw up a chopped beef sandwich. I was hungry and I did eat it, but I have to say without a doubt, it was absolutely the worst I have ever sank my teeth into. It was shredded so fine, that you wondered if you were even eating meat. It had no flavor. It looked like dog food with BBQ sauce slopped over it and the sauce was awful. I don't know why they call it Brown Sugar's, because I can assure you there was no brown sugar in their BBQ sauce. I have eaten at some of the best and worst BBQ places all over Texas and in the past I judged BBQ at the Taylor International BBQ Cook Off for quite a few years. As of today, I would honestly have to rank Brown Sugar's as the worst I have ever eaten.
