MY REVIEW: I love the band/music and from my experience they have a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I dine here several times a month and they have continued to provide consistantly great food and service. I have to recommend the apple strudel dessert...amazing!

MY REVIEW: I just read over some of the reviews and must say that people are overreacting. The food is good...not great but still pretty good and I have never had a waitress there which was rude to me. Infact the waitress makes that place more authentic because she actually is from germany which I found out in a very nice conversation I had with her. the food was out in time and the beer and Dessert s are great. I went there for lunch and once for dinner and both times me and my friends left full and happy.

MY REVIEW: Hopefully you enjoy slow meals. If so, you will like it here as the service is pedantic to say the least - more the fault of management not having enough staff, rather than the staff themselves to be fair. Our food also took 45 minutes from ordering until it arrived at our table and it was always a challenge to flag someone down for a fresh drink.

Other than that the food when it arrived was pretty good. We enjoyed the Rouladen, Schnitzel and Salmon (very nice accompanying remoulade sauce). The WurstSalad however was disappointing and quite dry. The only true negative was the band which was truly horrendous. I had the sort of feeling watching them that Brad & Janet must have had when they stumbled into the house for the first time in The Rocky Horror Show (like you been transported into a spooky other world). The female "singer" was one of those who couldn't sing that well, but loved her own voice, was too loud and when she was going for the high notes it was actually painful on the ears. If we can find out when the band aren not playing we would go back.

MY REVIEW: Wunderbar...

The Wurst was the best...sausage that is! Even the soup was better than I can make...and I can make a pretty mean Potatoe Soup! A few half liters of a good german draft beer and you think about putting on your lederhosen and doing the chicken dance. By the way we had a German beer that I have not seen anywhere else in the state...Maisel Weiss - WOW what find, I think the Germans have been keeping this beer for themselfs...now the Weiss is out of the bag!

Get by and try this Houston Land Mark...Excellent service Great Food...my only problem was I needed a place to lay down after my meal and bier! We need to convience the management to build a swing or hammock under the Old Oak Tree in the front yard!

MY REVIEW: AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!! We went on a Saturday night (1/19). The waitress was rude and the food was terrible. The ladies bathroom was dirty! First of all, it took forever to get service. Then, the beer was hot. Next, the food at our table was brought out at different times. We asked for one of the plates to be returned and the waitress came out and said the "cook was angry" because we did not like the food quality! We had to pay for it! It was one of the most terrible dining outings I have had in a long, long time. I will never go back.

MY REVIEW: I have known about this place for years and decided to try it. Bad idea. The food was cold and beer was hot. This place could be a great gem. I was hoping to have some great german food, but not here.

I visited after a friend told me many good things about it, and now i visit pretty often...everything is awesome!

MY REVIEW: Knock-out fun place, even when I didn't expect it, heading there alone and having a drink at the bar.

Met a personable swath of Houston, while downing some great German and Czech drafts. Finally felt compelled to order some schnitzel, which is the parent of Texas' famous chicken-fried steak. Crispy on the outside, tender within it went down perfectly with my pilsner. Even gave me the energy and balance to dance a couple to the Russian musical entertainment appearing that night.

Mellowed out b4 leaving on the patio with a chemical engineer college girl I met. Great time! Will take some friends to the beer garden next time!

MY REVIEW: My family and I visited Old Heidelberg for the first time last weekend. I really enjoyed my authentic rouladen dish! My family were all pleased with the food and the waitress was SO friendly. We had a great night with the live music. We will be going soon to celebrate my husband's brithday.

MY REVIEW: I had some family and friends come in from out of town, and they wanted to try something different. There where 12 of us in our party, from ages 25 to 75. The food and service was fabulous! We sampled some of the German beer and had a tried a couple bottles of wine. They had a great wine selection! We where going to leave to go dancing, but live entertainment had started close to us finishing our dinner. They sounded great! We ended up staying & dancing, sampled some more wine and desserts, closed the place down. My guests and I had a great time! Thank you for the great memories, we will be back!

MY REVIEW: I have visited this restaurant many times over the last several years, and I have always enjoyed the atmosphere. The customers are very friendly and the management and staff are consistantly welcoming and attentive. I really like the large selection of imported,(several German) beers, and the fact that there is live entertainment nightly, without a cover charge is always a bonus. Admittedly, I haven't tried all of the menu items, but what I have had has been very good. I always enjoy the German sausage, and the Potato Soup is excellent.

MY REVIEW: The Old Heidelberg is like a home for many of us..everybody seriously knows your name. My husband and I go very often and usually have a great time. I am very happy with the new band. Having grown up with German food, I know when I see and taste real German food, and this is the place for authentic German. It is not German-American like other resutrants. We will be going back!

MY REVIEW: I have lived in Germany for a few years, I know a little bit about the German food.

I like German food such as Sauer kraut, Wiener schnitzel, Rouladen and Bratwurst.

I visited Old Heidelberg last Thursday; the atmosphere was like I was in Germany! I order Combination Plate and my friend had weiner schnitzel sandwich and his son ordered what they call it Heidelberger!! What a name! Very big and nice Burger! He said he loved it and he took some of it home. Our food was so good and I had everything I wanted on one plate! Then the Music start and we enjoyed the music. We went to eat, but we stayed most of the night and enjoyed the music. The lady who waited on us was very nice and delightful; the apple strudel was also delicious with the ice cream on the side.

I defiantly will go back as soon as I return back home.

MY REVIEW: Well, now I understand the nosedive this place has undergone--Anne Marie is gone!! Didn't know that till I read the other reviews here. What happened to my husband and I last Thanksgiving at least now has an explanation.

We'd been coming to Old Heidelberg every Thanksgiving, as well as other days, for years. Last Thanksgiving, we called in a week ahead to make reservations for 1 PM. When we got there, there was a sign on the door saying that they had decided to close because not enough people had reserved! No call to inform us of this! We took our chances, drove to Rudi L*echner's and miraculously got in. We sat in the smoking section and were lightheaded by the time we left, but still counted ourselves lucky to have gotten a meal anywhere without reservations.

We wrote Old Heidelberg off after this. Poor Anne Marie would be horrified to know how far her once-stellar German restaurant has fallen.

MY REVIEW: The food was fair, the value so-so. We were very happy with the Hungarian Goulash soup. The cigarette smell hits you when you walk in but you accommodate and forget about it quickly. Would seriously worry about passive smoke hazards if I worked there.

It was a pleasant experience until the credit card slip came and the waiter had written in a gratuity, which was very strange since there were only three of us. We were using a restaurant.com $25 off coupon and it appears he wanted to preempt our tipping on the discounted total of $38 instead of the original $63. As it happens, he gave himself about the amount I was going to give him. This was just an unfortunate tacky close to an otherwise decent evening.

MY REVIEW: I have not been to the Old Heidelberg a lot before 2002 and loved it! Then I went to work overseas, including 2 years in Germany and Austria. I ate at the Heidelberg again in early December 2005. I was disappointed. The food was not very tasty, bland, no robust flavor. About the only good thing was the Weissbier... Apparently, the ownership has changed, but the quality of the food has definitely gone down. Verdict: with so many good European restaurants in Houston, eat somewhere else.

MY REVIEW: Despite the one week notice the restaurant wasn't by any means prepared to serve 18 people in an appropriate time frame. We arrived at 12.45pm punctually and weren't served lunch until 3pm. The only food I enjoyed was the appetizers, which were actually served at the temperature at which they were supposed to be served. The rest of the food arrived very late, the soups were all cold and so were the main dishes.

Our waitress believed we had come to be personally entertained and decided to tell us about the german guy she almost married and various other personal things. She didn't find the time to remove plates and when she finally did she constantly complained about how heavy the plates were.

Most of my co-workers had used their website to look at food options prior and were prepared to order from the menu displayed on the web. However, when we arrived a very different (lunch) menu was handed to us. This menu was much more restrictive and we were told that both the lunch menu and dinner menu are displayed but that we had only looked at the dinner menu... which was a bold lie. I am still unable to see the mysterious lunch menu on the web. Regardless, we were allowed to order a few dishes of the dinner menu, which was very nice.

However, a co-worker of mine had order lamb, medium well done. She and others who tried it insist it was beef and not lamb and rare rather then medium well.

The incompetence of the waitress was strinkingly displayed when she was asked for the catch of the day according to her it could be: catfish, snapper, salmon or something else. She apparently had no idea... or the restaurant doesn't have a catch of the day.

For my part: I apologized to everybody for suggesting this ...place, and send out weblinks to good german restaurants in the area.

MY REVIEW: I have to say, since the previous owner, Anne Marie is not there, the quality of food has gone down hill. How can one expect a non-German owner to have great German food? I have always liked the potato soup but the recipe seems to have been modified. Octoberfest was lame.

MY REVIEW: Our family has gone every year for Oktoberfest for about the past 8-10 years. We have a party of about 15-20 people, and always spend hundreds of dollars there. This time it definitely was NOT worth it. We called ahead of time to make sure that we could get the full menu, and upon placing our orders, were told that we had a very abbreviated version to choose from due to the fact that the kitchen was just "cranking out food" assembly line style. They even fought against giving my mother in law a freakin side salad! The food was so-so, but it was D*enny's grade at best. The german band was alright, but definitely not of any german training.... the guy couldn't even pronounce most of the words in the songs. Our family has a very strong German heritage, and since the new management has taken over, that wonderful Old World feel and ambiance has gone. Next year we're finding somewhere else....

MY REVIEW: I have been wanting to eat here for some time now, and unfortunatley I have to say that it was not worth the wait. As much as I wanted to like this place, the food was blah... we went on an early evening sunday and we were the only diners there which does not bother me in the least, another couple did show during our meal but they headed for the bar. Our waiter was very nice and attentive and did help us with suggestions.

We started with the sausage sampler and it was tasty, I had high hopes for the entrees. Both of us ordered the sampler to try a little of everything. The quantity for a sampler was good, but some of the items were hot as if they had just been cooked and others were luke-warm when I belive they should have been served much hotter. I was really looking forward to the potato dumplings but I was truly disapointed in them, they were nothing like the ones I ate in germany. The flavors were okay, but there was nothing special, I felt like I could have done a better job cooking this meal in my kitchen and it would have been served hot! I might go back to ckeck out the night life and drink beers, but if I eat I will stick to the sausages.

MY REVIEW: As a German native I can say I have had plenty of German food. Having said that, here is my opinion: Good food!

Good entertainment (it starts out with an Asian lady singing everything from current Billboard hits to old German songs and then turns into a Latin singles bar) ! If you have an open mind and like to try new things do yourself a favor and go there. Unless of course you hate the smell of smoke, then DO NOT go there.

The only thing I am truly missing is AnneMarie. She used to own this place, but she is not there anymore. Since then the service has very impersonal (but still good). Please don't drink American beer, go for the real thing and have a "Warsteiner." PROST!

Oh, and try the "Goulasch" suppe (Hungarian beef stew).

MY REVIEW: A good place to go try German Food. Non-intimidating environment. I agree with the reviewer who said it was smoky. It was a bit too smoky for me too. We went on a Friday night. We had no idea that there would be a live band. It was pretty loud, but hey, the food was great.

I'm planning to try other German restaurants around town.

MY REVIEW: My husband, daughter and I went here last Friday for dinner. It was a little disappointing to walk in and smell nothing but cigarette smoke, but we choose a table as far away from the bar as possible. My husband and I ordered a glass or Merlot, (for $6.00), and were somewhat annoyed when the glass arrived that held 3-4 ounces of cheap, (close to box), wine. We ordered our meal and all choose the soup of the day, lentil. The waitress came back quickly to tell us the lentil soup wasn't ready and to choose either the salad or potato soup, (the potato soup was very good). The meal arrived and the food was quite good. However, upon getting our bill, the total was close to $35 over what it should have been. (Not to mention they charged $2.00 per glass for my daughter's Diet Coke - she had 3 glasses.) The waitress, who didn't speak English very well, was trying to tell us what she thought she had done, but my husband ended up asking for the manager. Both returned to our table only to argue with my CPA-husband about the amount they charged and continuously said, "It is not my fault!" The manager was disciplining the waitress in front of us, and it was not a pretty sight! After getting a menu to verify the prices, and pulling out a calculator, the manager still could not get the total correct. My husband ended up paying more than we should have because by this time, (ONE HOUR after finishing our meal), we just wanted to leave. The overcharge ended up being the tip. Next time we'll try another German restaurant.
